I used to love seperates, I had quite a few good set-ups back when I was younger, that was quite a while ago though and family life has kind of put big dent in that old hobby.
I'm not sure what tips I could give you to be honest as i'm not clued up on the modern stuff, I guess like any hobby of this type it is the amount money you have to spend on it, as far as tips go and as much as I hate plugging individual company's "Marantz" used to make the best hardware, the main dilema for me was speakers a lot of the time, depending on what style of music I was listening to I would use different types, "Jamo" speakers were the best for music with a lot of bass (jungle music I used to listen to a lot back then), for everything else and for linking up to the TV for watching films etc I used switch to Marantz speakers.
Try looking for second hand stuff as well if you are a bit short of cash, I got a nice Marantz turntable locally for a fraction of what it was brand new at the time.

The general idea for surround systems is to have the same brand and series of speakers for the fronts and center. In this case you should first aim to get a MA BRLCR to match the MA BR2's.
I have not used a Yamaha amp for probably 10 years now so can't comment on it, I use NAD myself. I do, like you, use Monitor Audio speakers in a 7.1 configuration using the GS series all the way around and a SVS subwoofer. For pics and more info check out this link.
As for wow moment, probably when I powered up my system for the first time after I had the subwoofer installed to watch Serenity. I had to straighten up the picture frames on the walls afterwards.
If you plan on investing a bit of money in this hobby I suggest you start looking at second hand Silver RS speakers. They simply have the best price/performance out there.

yeah one the reasons i got monitor br2s for my fronts is because they are really good al rounders as my gf uses them on 2 channel stereo alot of the time and i must say they are brill at it..we used 2 own a pair of jamo studio 170 floorstands and i was thinking using them for cinama but the bass was too overpowering tbh it effected voices to the point it was a no go for me. and yes i agree money is a limiting factor which is why im looked and still looking in the bronze range in the monitor audio speakers.

man first thing that subwoofer looks killer haha wish i had that and nice system man.. but yeah i love monitor audio i plan to update most the system to this confiq when my gf lets me spend some money on it anyways (she thinks its overkill atm) i cant afford the gold range though i go for bronze range i think the value for money is stupidly good btw mine aint 7.1 :(..... i have to give that up so i can bi amp my 2 fronts using the spare ternimal things
fronts - monitor audio br6 floorstands centre - monitor audio.... err centre speaker from the bronze range rears - current br2s i may update the subwoofer and upgrade to a 12 inch version i dunno
i only just recently got the hd decoders working too because before i was using a old ray tube tv because of money but now i got blue ray ect ect it sounds alot nicer than the older formats dts hd master audio is my personal best....

7.1 isn't much of an improvemenet over 5.1 not to mention very few Blu-Ray discs actually have a 7.1 track (at least here in the UK).
Your upgrade plan sounds solid. The BRLCR is the Bronze center speaker btw. For subs, have a look here, they are very popular and a lot of people with MA speakers use them.

If you are referring to the couch on the first page yeah I know it was horrible but on the second page you can see it upgraded.

Edited by: Taua Roqa on 16/02/2010 20:55:39 don't have a home cinema system per se, but my hifi is a nad c320bee and mission m32i speakers, and speaker placement is so, so important. I'd try using all the same brand/series/technology of speakers too as to avoid mismatches.
speaker placement though (and the same b/s/t), the most important thing :)
for headphones i've used grados' 325i, sennheiser hd555/595 lower end grado and randoms like panasonic, sony, etc...
sennheiser 555 are good, decent build quality and good sound and not too pricey (very comfortable too :D). don't bother with grado, build quality is inexcusable.
