There is a link in that article, and in that link there is a quote that i think perfectly sums up whats going on.
Quote: "We are pretty realistic," Williams said. "People who are actively pirating will try to find ways to continue to pirate."

hahaha....
I had just heard about this on the radio today.
Yeah, its optional, BUTTTTTTTTT....
A great majority of people out there have their options set to FULLY AUTOMATIC UPDATES, and they usually have this set to update when they are asleep. They wake up, turn on the computer and see, ohh, 12 updates were done...Ooookie dokie, and then they move on never having seen what those updates were.
So, chances are great that people are going to be getting this Optional Patch without even knowing about it.
Also, IIRC, this update is for Windows 7 only. But, knowing MS, they will bleed it into their other OS's too. A 10th of all I earn I keep for myself. |

Pirates certainly don't. Anyone smart enough to know how to activate windows on a Pirated Copy keeps Windows Updates muzzled and off at all costs. Windows Updates has broken more computers for me, legit and otherwise, than any virus ever could. Service Packs are especially bad for this, My last XP install SP3 nuked my uxtheme.dll (It wasn't even patched for any custom skins, bleh) and i spent 3 hours trying to get it functional again using the XP repair disc (ugh)

lol I've mostly been busy with school and stuff, but I've finally returned to EVE. I finally got a non-ancient computer, and it runs EVE beautifully, although it currently runs Windows 7 (and will till I learn how to use linux well) I will say its rather nice except for a few bugs with WMP 11, other than that I've had no issues. Then again, I haven't given Microsoft the appropriate amount of time to screw it up yet. Anyways, I decided to join a corp in 0.0, what with TFC being somewhat dead (to say the least). Hope to see you in game though! _________________________________________________________________

ohhh mann...
I just heard more about this on the radio again, listening to the High Tech Texan guy (Michael Garfield). This update will continue to search the persons system periodically month after month.
They also said that MicroSofts update would be redefined each time as MS gathers more intel from pirated copies. So, even those who have a legit copy, the update "can" think its pirated anyways 6mths down the road. I forget the exact wording they used or HOW it would think a legit copy was now, all of a sudden a pirated one.
I do remember what they said this "patch" would do when it does suspect a pirated copy.
It will turn your background desktop to a black background and every 30min or so, it will start spamming you with a popup saying something along the lines of...
"Common, stop using a pirated copy and register your OS".
You can click the popup off the screen, but it will continue to popup over and over again until you register the OS.
The potential of this patch to cause havok on legit copy owners is from those who buy computers from 2nd hand stores, such as a used computer as well as those who buy a computer from a store who's already installed the Win7 on the computer before you buy it.
I can just imagine MS is going to be getting a heck of a lot of complaints about this soon. A 10th of all I earn I keep for myself. |

Edited by: Marko Riva on 13/02/2010 23:23:31 I don't get it, they made the softweare and for some odd reason if they try to take care of people who use a pirated version ppl get in a hissy fit. If you want to use it pay for it, if you don't want to use it or feel that it's way cooler to bash MS (while ofcourse still using their products) then use something else.
Personally I hope it completely removes the windows install if you have a pirated version.

We're not Mocking the fact they are trying to remove Pirates from using their Operating System.
We're mocking the fact they are doing it with a completely optional update that you can, and pirates will, chose to completely ignore, thus rendering the whole Charade pointless. Ignoring it will not hinder the computer in any negative way, so in otherwords...
Pointless. _____________________________________ Haruhiist since December 2008
