Hi everyone, I am intending to put up a high sec POS and am intending to have the following ôdeath-starö defense set up on it. These mods would mainly be a deterrent from getting war decÆed and to defend the POS if need be, so they will be offline until needed.
My corp is only able to field 2 POS gunners, so letÆs say only able to control 8 guns.
Fitting information for Domination Control Tower
Structure (Status) 6 x Medium Artillery Battery (Online) Heat Dissipation Array (Online) 2 x Explosion Dampening Array (Online) 2 x Ballistic Deflection Array (Online) 6 x Medium AutoCannon Battery (Online) 5 x Small Artillery Battery (Online) 2 x Warp Disruption Battery (Online) 5 x Small AutoCannon Battery (Online) 3 x Stasis Webification Battery (Online) 4 x White Noise Generation Battery (Online) 4 x Spatial Destabilization Battery (Online) 4 x Phase Inversion Battery (Online) 4 x Ion Field Projection Battery (Online)

Any improvements that I could do to the set up?
IÆm actually not too sure about the difference between autocannons and arty. All I know is that autocannons work up to 90km and arty is for > 90km?
I would also appreciate advice on the placement of the guns. Is grouping all of them into 2 groups good enough? Or is there a better gun placement?
Oh, and should I be including NOS batteries in my set up?
Would really appreciate your comments!

The only thing I miss are Energy Neutralizers (there is no NOS) and spare guns. Energy Neuts are very useful if you're facing a RR fleet and it can cause all sorts of hell for Logistics. They come in relatively cheap faction variants that have over 3mil HP in their armor alone. Faction Stasis Webs are worth looking into as well, they reduce the speed by a mind-boggling 97.5%.
Don't forget to put the defenses in a 6 point diamond pattern. Imagine putting a diamond the size of your POS shield in the middle of your POS. The 6 points of the diamond that stick out of the shield is where you want your defenses. Or, simply put, 1 on top, 1 below, 1 left, 1 right, 1 front and 1 back.
Try to spread out your guns and E-War equally so there are no weakpoints for the enemy to exploit by staying at a certain range and position.
Mix ammo with EMP, Fusion and Titanium Sabot. This varies the ranges and damage types a lot, ensuring the enemy can't just perma-tank one or two damage types.
Don't forget about spare guns. If you can online 12 meds, anchor 36. They only take 5 minutes to online (less for Faction) and attacking fleets hate it. In addition, the enemy won't have a clue as to what will go online and what won't.
Beyond all that, get Starbase Defense Management for yourself and anyone willing to train it. Being able to control the guns yourself means you get to insta-pop ships at your leisure.
The best defense are friends though, lots of them. ------------------------ Low-sec is like sailing along the coast of Somalia...

Thanks for the tip about the 6 point defense.
If I'm to use 2 NOS, I've to give up 2 med arty and 2 med autocannon. I'm not too sure if that would be worth it. I mean isn't the point of the ecm batteries to screw with the targeting and make RR difficult?
Oh, and it would be great if someone could tell me more about the difference in between autocannons and arty. All I know is that autocannons work up to 90km and arty is for > 90km? Is this correct? Or can arty also work for targets closer to 90km?

Autocannons have faster tracking as well as a faster rate of fire, though they don't do as much damage as Artillery and don't have the range of Artillery cannons.
Artillery do more damage but have bad tracking, but are great for preventing people from getting close to your POS since they have great range.

A POS is typically attacked at point-blank range, so short-range weapons like AutoCannons come into play.
Long-range weapons discourages the defenses from being sniped.
When under control of a gunner, artillery can take big chunks out of ships per volley (I like faction ammo in artillery). With enough guns and gunners, any battleship will pop.

Hmm, So should I be adding in sensor dampeners? Since, both arty and autocannons are short range weapons, I don't want to be sniped from far away.

Artillery are long-range weapons.

Instead of a death star, I suggest the life star defense pos! Destroy the enemy's will to fight and reload ammo by anchoring sets of shield hardeners! Laugh as their 30+ bs fleets fail at breaking the natural regen of PoS shields. I am a lazy bear, someone do the math for me couple million hp in shield, armor, and structure for a tower. Then add resists. http://www.eveonline.com/ingameboard.asp?a=topic&threadID=1213058 Hi-sec R&D corp boosting is open for business! |

Oh, I just realised that I have a problem setting up the 6 point defense.
I have 5 small arty and 5 small autocannons... No idea how am I going to split them into 6 groups :)
Oh and I would really like a second opinion on adding NOS. Is giving up 2 med arty and 2 mid autocannons worth adding 2 NOS?

I don't have any neuts. They are really intended for sieged dreads. I rely more on ECM.
Keep in mind, you can anchor whatever you want 'cause you don't have to online any of it unless you get a wardec.
My w-space POS is in 0.0 so it needs defenses online.

I've already brought a couple neuts, so will anchor 1 at the top and another at the bottom. (and see if I really need them)
What I'm wondering is how to place the remaining guns?
Initially, I was thinking of grouping 1 of each mod into a group. However, this isn't working. I can't possibly split 5 small arty guns into 6 groups :) Any advice on this?

After a bit of thought, I've decided to not do a six point positioning of my guns and instead do a 4 point defense.
So, its gonna look something like this:
Top
2 x Medium Artillery Battery 2 x Medium AutoCannon Battery 2 x Small Artillery Battery 2 x Small AutoCannon Battery 2 x Stasis Webification Battery 1 of each racial ECM Neut
Bottom
2 x Medium Artillery Battery 2 x Medium AutoCannon Battery Small Artillery Battery Small AutoCannon Battery Stasis Webification Battery 1 of each racial ECM Neut
Side (2 sides) Medium Artillery Battery Medium AutoCannon Battery Small Artillery Battery Small AutoCannon Battery 1 of each racial ECM
So basically, I'm gonna be strongest at the top. If I decide to turn on the 2 Neuts, I will turn off 1 med arty and 1 med autocannon at the top and the bottom. Also, I will have 2 spare copies of each items at the top, bottom and sides.
Feedback would be greatly appreciated!

Edited by: EvilCheez on 14/02/2010 14:35:08 Do you need a death star? Are you sure? There are plenty of pos's out there. Why bother with all this defence. If don't have tons of enemies, I would put up some shield hardners, a dozen ecm, a couple of warp disruptors, and 4 med guns. Leave most offline and don't sweat it.

question, what are you planning on using the pos for? alot of suggestion for setups in sticky and other threads. And as for spreading out your poss batteries , remember you can deploy extra batteries and keep them offline at each point, activate them and use when one has been damaged or destroyed, also more possible targets for them, and more time they have to spend. Suggestion would also use a lot of arti batteries. If you go into reinforced mode, any mods using cpu will shut down, arti will keep fighting, if i remember it right.

for hisec this usually best, i would have maybe 15 guns, for that instant bs pop effect if i wanted to, but remember, if wardeced you can just pull down the valuable stuff or all of it and park it in safe npc station.

Personally I much prefer Amarr towers to Mini although that probably stems from living in 0.0 and towers out there have to cover so much more ground.
Neuts - Im divided on them they are useful on the odd occation, but they suck up a towers CPU/Powergrid (never remember which one) and it sorta doesnt make it worth it. If you do fit them I strong suggest go faction here, it will cost ALOT more but its worth it in my opinion.
Arties/Autos - Your typical BS fleet these days will engage at about 30-50km from the usually from the weakest side (assuming intelligent attackers)so you either need to place your guns around thte whole tower evenally or use ammo that will cover this firing range.
Small Arties will go out to 190km + 168km with fall off so with EMP your hitting out to 95km at 100% damage, Autos have 10km optimals with 42km fall off. That initially looks like go arties but the rate of fire makes the Autos worth it, plus if the hostiles are sniping with a BS fleet they are going to be there till the end of time trying to reinforce it. If you man these guns make sure you aim soley for the logitics initially, having these go after logi's screws their remote rep abilites because they've gotta keep each other alive and not the BS. Id suggest have a few more autos than arties but vary the damage type in the ammo makes tanking that bit harder (because everyone will assume EMP ammo and tank for that).
Medium is exactly the same but use these on the BS if your gunning with them.
ECM - have slightly more Gallente and Amarr (Amarr over Gallente) most BS are armor tanked and will use Guardians to remote rep, man the ECM and scramble the Logi's
Warp Disruption - Seriously consider fitting some warp scramblers they use less CPU/Power grid and can still deal with the buggers close in just as well
How to place them - There are so many suggestions here is rediculous. My anchouring technique varies a hell of alot depending on how much there is to anchor. the standard starting point tends to be group at the top, bottom and then 4 groups around the side. People will argue here that top and bottom is enough or one group is or they should all be equally spread around the tower. Its a nightmare, but if you have little to no exerience I suggest go for the top bottom side approach.
Gunners - If your really worried about the tower defence get more, a fully gunned tower is a nightmare to kill. If you look around the net there are ways to get a lvl 4 pos gunner (and cyno lvl 3) alt made in 15 days so if you can stand taking a wk or so out of your training plan then its worth it. If ya cant find it drop me a mail in game and Ill send you the details.
Tower Usage - Whatever you are going to use this tower for make sure that you never store expensive items (BPOs!) in them, security setting hangers in POSes are terrible and if the tower goes into reinforced BPO research stops and you will lose the BPOs if you lose the tower. Also, NEVER put bookmarks into POS hangers it bugs them and you can't unanchor them.
Tip - Find a moon that is on the edge of a solar system, so that the bulk of the system reference points (belts, planets, sun etc) are within a 180 degree range of the tower (ie no/few belts, planets behind the tower) then concentrate the towers Ewar towards the front.
Final note: Sorry if any of that is obvious I get carried away too often .

I tend to follow this line of thinking. In high sec, I'd strongly consider putting a ridiculous amount of ECM + guns on it.
