\o/ The sun is the answer.
To turn off press escape then untick "Sun Occluded by ships" Its on the general (left hand tab from memory. All it does is when your ship passes in front of a sun it doesnt block the light :)

Don't forget to change the setting in prefs.ini. The problem with the latest shiva patch has been the "Sun Occluded by ships" setting on the esc menu is being overridden. I had the setting turned off on the esc menu and was getting this lockup issue. It was not until I found the setting in prefs.ini and changed it that stability returned.
Also I have noticed (as stated previously by me) that occasionally the game still exhibits sun occlusion even with the prefs.ini and esc menu showing the setting being turned off. If this is the case I close eve before it has a chance to close on me. Quitting the game is faster than the lockup/ctrl-alt-del/endprocess cycle. I have yet to have this setting turn on in the middle of a gameing session, so the first time I exit a station I check to see if the light from the sun is blocked by my ship. If not I continue gamming, quite happily I might add. If it does, quit and restart eve.
I am personally 100% convinced that sun occlusion is the problem. It looks nice, and I wish it worked, but it is far more important that I can actually play the game.

I second that. I have not experienced any black screens after I've deactivated this effect. I actually activated the effect yesterday and today I started getting problems. I'm using Nvidia Geforce FX 5600 256mb vid card and sometimes my game totally crashes the computer. Nothing wrong with the computer although I have to restart it each time it happens. All I do is exiting/undocking a station. I can't say if the sun is involved as I (currently) can't remember if the station exit/camera were facing it when I docked. This glitch/bug/cookie is not just ATI related.

Right, my client just froze, I hit Ctrl-Alt-Del a few times and got this nice little blue screen:
------------------------------ A problem has been detected and Windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.
The problem seems to be caused by the following file: nv4_disp
If this is the first time you've seen this Stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps:
The device driver got stuck in an infinite loop. This usually indicates problem with the device itself or with the device driver programming the hardware incorrectly.
Please check with your hardware device vendor for any driver updates.
Technical information: ***STOP: 0x000000EA (0x85C63DA8, 0x85A0A3A0, 0x85C35BE8, 0x00000001)
nv4_disp Beginning dump of physical memory
------------------------------
Restarted at no more blue screenie. Now, the thing is, I didn't have this problem yesterday. So it just recently surfaced due to some unkown thing. Did CCP do something serverside?

I already did disable that sun thing (although I couldn't find it anywhere in prefs.ini - strange). The problem remained. Funny though it hasn't happened on my Amarr character only on my Gallente character. Could it be the stations? *shrug*
(Racial bonuses eh?)

OK, I disabled the sun setting, and installed the latest Cata drivers for my Radeon card, but I still get the freezes. When I rotate around to check, I still seem to blot out the sun so the "feature" is not disabled even though I disabled it. I can't seem to find the file to change in the .ini so now I'm a bit stuck.

OK I did that but to honest I started this nad figured that out a long time ago =(, and I should have posted my findings but I did forget this post. In any case it is the sun that is causing the crash and have not had one since I disabled the setting. For those about to Fire, We will cure you. |

I've had a ressurection of this problem. Now, no matter what I do sometimes the client insists on starting with sun occlusion setting. This is getting REALLY frustrating. I wish a word from CCP on this would be forthcomming.
EVERY time I have sun occlusion my game hangs, without fail, 100% repeatable. The only thing I can't reproduce is WHY the client will sometimes start with sun occlusion and sometimes not. I'm at my wit's end.

I tried all these mentioned solutions and both my computers keep crashing. What I don't understand is that CCP is not even reacting on it...

Well, it turned out that in my case the problems with EVE freezing was (most likely) because of the graphics card. I can't be 100% sure but I played for a while, did some things where it would freeze for sure with the old graphic card and everything was OK. I don't know why or how it worked before exodus but my guess is it has something to do with the new graphic features like rings around planets and such.
There might be other causes in different cases but I suggest that you borrow a different graphics card just to make sure the problem isn't there. Oh, just for the info - everything was working OK on my PC but a few days ago I installed another game which was graphicaly demanding and the same thing happened - PC was freezing every few minutes.
Hope this helps some of you.
