Hey there players and friends.
Sign the EB Games petition and get your voice in on ratings.
There's only a couple more weeks before EVE ONLINE is likely to be blocked from access by us, with the great firewall of Australia being enabled.

A program/service like PingFu (Google it) will bypass the filter system the Australian government is about to introduce. Plus, it helps with your ping times as well.

Liberalism gone haywire. The road to hell is paved with good intentions. Big government means less freedom unfortunately.

Question tho... I've read a little about this and want to know the avergae Aussie's opinion of this. Do they thing this is due to overbearing "statist liberals", or right wing govt?
I would assume most would blame it on the right, but surprisingly it seems the left censor and control people's personal lives in the US just as much, if not more than, the right in our country.
I guess I always kind of assumed Australia was pretty left-leaning.
When people learn to stop discussing things in terms of "left' or 'right" then we can have a conversation.

Point well taken. From what I've read, you have certain "family first" groups that want to filter the internet for the pron, but then you also have George Newhouse, a lawyer who think anything he deems racist should be removed...
Just seems like the government in Australia is really overstepping individual liberty, period.

Australia censoring games is ones thing, but what really bothers me is when the "Government" makes unlawful land grabs. This, from what I understand, is directed at farmers, one of which I heard was staging a hunger protest.

Unfortuntaly here in australia we have very poor civil liberty laws, nor do we have the political groups to try push the issues, thus the government has every legal right (under our (australian) constutution) to create laws as such to enact a mandatory firewall.
If this were America where they have clear freedom of speach laws written into their amendments to teh constutution then pretty much any citizen would be able to take teh government to a supreme court and challenge the legality of a Mandatory firewall.
as for land grabs i am not sure however i belevie that could be challenged though i do not know the particulars.

Thats because in the US, the words Liberal and Conservative are relative to Government control, not the dictionary definitions. Liberals are federalists and conservatives are anti-federalists.
I.E. liberal doses of government control. -------------------------------------------------- I'm so Old I can remember when QQ was TT

Cipher, I agree with you. The last 20 years or so in the US, it seems the liberals have been way more involved in "personal decisions" legislation, such as what you are allowed to eat, where and if you can smoke, whether or not you should be allowed to own a gun, what kind and how much power you consume etc etc.
But again, I may be digressing into the whole "left vs right" thing. In the US, it seems conservatives are more interested in States rights while the Liberals are more into Federal rights.

I'm not 'stralian so you'll have to clear this up for me; I thought this legislation wasn't even scheduled for proposal to parliament until this fall, not so?
Edit: Found the actual proposal. Quote: The Government expects to introduce legislation during the Autumn 2010 parliamentary sittings. There will be a twelve months process of implementation after the passage of the legislation.

Eve is currently unrated, also why the box set wasn't released here.
The firewall is to block unrated content.
Therefore the lobbying for a games rating system.

Eve is rated, which is why the box could be sold in the rest of the world, and why we now have that nice ESRB notice.

Simply because it is not rated in Australia. While rated everywhere else in the world Atari withdrew it's application to be rated by the Australian Film and Censorship board and when the Australian firewall goes up all it will take it 2 complaints for the game to be placed onto the firewall blacklist and access would be blocked. We have religious zealots who have the balance of power and are happily using their balance to get everything they want. It does not help that we have religious wackjobs in both of the major parties supporting them as well.
Wis Atari Australia not bothering to have the game rated and released in Australia ? I do not know since they do not answer my emails on this question.

Edited by: Aiadan Adathlyn on 16/02/2010 12:37:16 This whole thing is basically about an R18+ classification. Australia is one of the only developed countries not to have an R18+ classification for games, so if it exceeds the criteria for MA15+ it is refused classification and unable to be released (manhunt, Left 4 dead 2, etc.) There has been attempts to introduce legislation to change this, but they have failed. the tl;dr version is for legislation to become law, each of the attorney-general need to approve it (there's one for each state). All have approved it except the South Australian attorney-general Michael Atkinson, who is a hard line christian living in the 1950. "Why don't you just vote him out?" I hear you ask. Good question. And I'd totally vote for the other guy, but the position of attorney-general is appointed, not elected, so we're screwed :p
tl;dr this petition won't work because Atkinson is backwards and we can't do ****
The Great Australian Firewall is another issue. The above posts are correct, it will block unrated material (youpron dot com), and also block downloadable games or flash based games that do no meet the MA15+ standard. Right now, eve online would be blocked by the firewall because it bears no rating. But should it be reviewed, I am sure Eve would only achieve a PG rating at best: it has profanity but no graphic blood/guts etc etc.
For it to get a rating, and therefore be playable in post-firewall Australia, CCP has to submit a copy for evaluation to the classifications board. Given that there are many subscribers from down under, and assuming CCP wants to keep this revenue stream, I would assume CCP would already be aware of this and are *right now* preparing a copy of their game for review. Right guys?
Right?

Whats scary to me is how they keep slipping huge changes to things through with very little fan-fare, or while everyone is focused (thanks to what they report) on something pointless.
Patriot act, this new corporate election contribution thing, ETC.
Seems currently we are going corporate or socialist. This isnt a democracy anymore. Hasent been for a long time.
Federal reserve is a privately owned bank, they have their name on our money, and we gave them all our nations gold.(We have none, look it up, look up how the federal reserve took over our currency, it was rotten)
