Neat video of the test saves the thread.

kind of pointless since ICBMs are updated, most Missiles used by other countries carries a payload of more then 6 warheads with decoys aswell. and other counter measures.
unless of course this can hit a missile after its launched and before its last stage of rentry and before it splits up.
then again this is aimed at ghost weapons and weapons from North korea which can hit the west coast.

It blows up the missile in the initial boost phase so there will be no chance of decoy bombs or mirvs spoofing the defence.

Zeba's right. The final phase (where it splits up for reentry) is usually too late to do anything about, so we prefer to get rid of said missles long before they split. Hence, technology focused on that. _________________________________________________________________

still disagree, since the last stage is above the atmosphere and very fast. and the new missiles are designed to change trajectory before the final phase.
anyhow this will fail in any nuclear war since if it did work it could shoot down couple nukes compared to the amount of nukes both sides would be launching.

Shhhhh--don't let Kim Jong Il of North Korea know that this system probably won't really work against actual nuclear missiles. Let him think the West can turn his missiles into fried wontons. At least until somebody can convince him that he can use atomic hand grenades to destroy laser-equipped 747's flying over his head, ha ha.

there are concerns about range and timing, though. The laser has an effective range of 600km max, and has to be fired in the first four minutes of flight or the warhead may still have enough kinetic energy to hit somewhere around where it was aimed, if it's not destroyed outright _____________________ Horrors! hey on the Granade the US was stupid enough to build and design the davy crocket which was basicaly a Grande launched version of a Nuke, only issue it was sucidal for the person that fired it :p

Which is why you shoot them before they separate.
Quote: with decoys aswell. and other counter measures.
Decoys do not* work**. Anyone who claims otherwise does not understand the basic physics involved.
*Technically you could make a decoy that works, but since it would have the exact same mass and volume as a real warhead you might as well just carry another warhead instead of a decoy.
**Unless by "work" you mean "serve a useful political purpose because our opponents in the battle over funding can not legally release the information that proves that our claims about decoys are pure fiction." In that case, they work wonderfully.
Quote: unless of course this can hit a missile after its launched and before its last stage of rentry and before it splits up.
See above. This is exactly what ABL (and most other missile defense systems) are designed to do.
Quote: then again this is aimed at ghost weapons and weapons from North korea which can hit the west coast.
Hint: you design your weapons for what you might encounter in the future, not what exists right now. Designing a new weapon and getting it into full-scale production takes huge amounts of time and effort, so you anticipate this delay and start working on your new weapons before they are actually needed. Since it is entirely plausible for North Korea (or Iran, etc) to develop long-range ballistic missiles, it is a good idea to develop countermeasures for them. -----------

firstly whats with teh Hints?
ABLs arent perfect and systems arent just designed for the future, the cold war has shown that weapons were designed to counter things at the time
example can be the F-14 which was designed to fight the Mig (at that time) f-22 cold war plane only diffrence its avionics and so on have been updated. and other weapons platforms.
it may be tested against targets which are within range, but the weapons its tested against arent really going to act or be like weapons used by Russia and other nuclear powers.
as said before these weapons are good for after launch. and its not full proof.

This is an urban legend. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Davy_Crockett_%28nuclear_device%29, the lethal radius was considerably less than the maximum range of the weapon. Sure, firing it would probably be a dangerous job, but life expectancy for the average soldier in a full-scale US-Soviet nuclear war is pretty short anyway.
Originally by: Bodrul and the new missiles are designed to change trajectory before the final phase.
This is not possible due to the laws of physics. You are better off just building more missiles than wasting payload space on carrying enough fuel to make significant course changes late in the missile's trajectory. Ballistic missiles do have the ability to make minor course corrections, but these are slight corrections to ensure accurate aim, not dramatic evasions.
(Remember, if you dodge the interceptor, you have to carry enough fuel to get back on your original trajectory or your missile is effectively killed anyway.)
Quote: anyhow this will fail in any nuclear war since if it did work it could shoot down couple nukes compared to the amount of nukes both sides would be launching.
This assumes that only one prototype is ever deployed. A full-scale missile defense system is capable of making ICBMs completely irrelevant. -----------

Firstly the lack of pew pew noise is fail. I want proper continuous beams on my amarr ships tho :)
Mobile deployable ABL platform has alot of potential as it avoids Putins' (and others) political objections to static equivalent technologies. Ze Russians have been blocking attempts to construct a ballistic missile shield network for some time now.
