it's true. the scale was pretty lol (destroyers the size of planets), and i remember getting stuck on some stupid campaign mission where i had to save some ship in an asteroid system...i never got around to grabbing mods for it, though
i did like the turret firing arcs and driving my evil doomdestroyer with lots of forward shields straight through a number of smaller and squishier ships. I think x3 is a lot better though
well, keep in mind starfury was out around the time of x2.. Had good modding potential, and some people did some cool stuff. it was more modding friendly than the x series at least, especially given that everything was quite literally text files with clear descriptions.
Of course starfury was unfortunately not very path-finding friendly; as in x3, if you start ramping up the speed fighters start hitting each other... wait no, they do that in normal speed. >.> quick question abuot SE 4 - am i supposed to take every single planet that I can colonize? ah. Ive been going under the impression that its better to only manage the few colonies that you can actually use properly.
What about mobile mining? is that effective/useful? i started next to like 3 asteroid fields..
edit I also managed to make myself at war with some guy using temporal weapons.. They seem to nom shields for breakfast, and one of them goes straight through shields and armor -.- how am i supposed to deal with that?
So far I came up with the brilliant idea of missile swarms, but even that doesnt work so well against numerous ships running PDS edit2 cloaking? yeah, there's no administrative-style penalties for colonizing everything; i know in SEV populations have organics maintenance requirements (they needs to eat!) but it's both small and linear Quote:

Mobile mining is alright; if you're hurting for material, it's certainly worthwhile to use, although the value is decreased permanently by 1% per turn, regardless of how much you mine.
I prefer to wait until i get stellar manipulation and collapse the roids into planets and monolith mine them the old fashioned way Quote:

i haven't played SEIV in awhile, so i don't remember the particulars of the weapons you're talking about
if you've got time, deploy some mines ahead of it, it may hit them and explode
see if they target fighters, satellites, or drones; if not, you can use one of those to pop it where it can't shoot back (fighters being the best choice, drones are pretty weird but can kamikaze fairly well, satellites are stationary...but can fit missiles \o/)
if that doesn't work, try outranging them (missiles or any beam-type weapon will do) and setting your ship strategy to max weapons range
if that doesn't work, fill lots of ships up with a ton of armor and shoot them till they dieeeeeeee (zergs ftw)
Quote:
edit2 cloaking? How useful is that,,
if they have scanners, they'll be seen. they also can't sweep mines while cloaked, and every warp point will be littered with mines as time goes along _____________________ Horrors! Demons in the deep! |

Looks like zergs it is. My basic strategy at this point is spam missiles/meson blasters. Seems to work, but ive only been fighting when i outnumber them like 2:1... I upgraded to phasic shields, but Im not sure if those will actually block temporal weapons :\

yeah, i think the phased shields only help against phased-polaron beams
the cloaks don't work in combat. if they're seen via sensors in-system, they function as uncloaked; if they're in a sector with ships that get into combat, they also show up in combat. It's a strategic thing more than a tactical one _____________________ Horrors! Demons in the deep! |

yeah, space yard ships (and starbases) are the coolest, although the build rate is slowwwwww. the ability to have a lot of them makes up for it though _____________________ Horrors! Demons in the deep! |

nope, they are crazy.. not sure how its supposed to be, but maintaining one of my shiny new beam cruisers (phased beams ) costs 3.5k metal, some org, and 1k rads. Thats crazy! 25%/turn?
Also, good call with the planet creation. I made a roid field into a medium planet (i think?) and it happened to be a med rock/oxygen (my type.. yeah i know) with 300ish% metal That planet now produces around 60k metal/turn. i usually use ice or rock/methane, there's usually lots of rock/oxygens and gas/hydrogens in the AIs to steal from (and the occasional co2). although, with atmospheric facilities it doesn't really matter, it's more your choice of ubiquitous system color (everything winds up blue as oxygen, green as co2, etc) _____________________ Horrors! Looking forward to it. The hexes remind me of the Battle Isle series and if the one unit per hex is true then it will be familiar territory.
Here is a screenshot gallery and some more info pulled from a Danish magazine (source of a source):
- Switch from squares to hexagons changing the way the game plays. More room for manoeuvres and more tactical options.
- Changes to combat. More depth in combat, no more stacking of units. This will lead to bigger focus on terrain.
- Inspired by Panzer General.
- Reintroduction of Bombardment, now archers and siege equipment can shoot over melee units.
- Better diplomatic AI.
- More diplomatic options between players.
- Less "cheating" AI.
- Religion is not a factor anymore.
- Resources are not infinite.
- City States behave like small countries that never develop beyond their single city. They can provide a bonus if you befriend them, or you can take over their land.
- Civics are out, now there is something called "Social Policies".
- About the same amount of wonders, the tech tree will feel familiar. Great People still in.
- Some victory conditions changed. For example in Conquest you only have to capture all the other capitals. Eliminates boring mop up phase.
- Unique Civ leader bonuses, no more standard "Spiritual" or "Financial".
- DirectX 11 support.
- Built in web browser. Sid Meier is also working on a facebook application of Civilization.
Playing Tyrannis then Civ 5, hopefully both will give us empire builders something to chew on.

Aww. I thought it was an interesting decision in civ IV, especially as it added a lot to the cultural victory condition.

could anyone elaborate on this? Religions in civ4 were largely a just a function of if you had a religion, and what the state religion was. As I recall there was no maulus for having more than one religion, as long as you had the state religion (or free religion) in your city. It was actually one of the few ways ive seen religion done so.. un-controversially (all of them were the same..) OHGODS BELOW THIS LINE IS MY SIG !!!! SRSLY! Just lose the first "u".
The reason why religion was so non-controversial is because it was designed specifically that way. There were scared some religious fanatics would go medieval on them if they even hinted at anything that could hypothetically offend them. Rightfully scared, sadly.

hah, just don't go broke; i never build enough storage to realize i'm about to go broke until i actually do
anyhow, i was always a fan of carriers and fighters for systems; oddly enough the carriers can land their fighters on planets to take them over (at least in SEV) mostly intact once the initial bombing to blow up the platforms/troops goes through
although you usually wind up scrapping everything and rebuilding it anyway so it's only really useful for the breathers _____________________ Horrors! Demons in the deep! |
