I arrived in EVE just when "Incarna" was released. After creating a trial account based on an invitation i spent at least an hour with the character creator.
With keeping in mind, that this character somewhere in the future will represent my "digital me" in "WiS" and it might be unchangeable, i want it looking in a way i could identify myself with it.
I even biomassed a second (almoust untrained) character, because i was not satisfied, how he was looking.
Now - due to the last patches, every character has received a free "resculpturing". Sometimes, when my usual daily "FiS" bussines is done, i'm playing around with the character creator, but most times i abort it - i can't reach any improvement. I think, i'll keep it for cases, where a patch will do harm to the characters, but i hope, it won't happen (again). Remeber the sudden "balloon problem" concerning the female characters?
TL;DR :
I think, CCP created a very nice character editor, and there's no reason for being ashamed of spending "too much time" within it, as long as you reach a result, which satisfies you. |

I'll admit to having played with the character creator a bit right after it first came out. For Wrayeth, I probably spent about 45 minutes gettig this portrait right since I wasn't planning to change it, ever, and would have to look at it constantly. I was going to a slightly sinister look and didn't want the perfect features you see on many other avatars without going the comedy route, so it took a little bit. |

CCP Punkturis wrote:Iria Ahrens the facial expression on your portrait is amazing! Confirming this. Best expression i've seen on an incarnatar in ages, hands down.
I've probably spent a day or so total on Morwen's sculpt and portraits in the year and a half since Incursion was released (using the free resculpt tokens we were given when Incursion first launched due to the, well, massive mess that the editor was when it started).
I started with this, pre-Incursion.
When the first iterations of the editor were released on Sisi, I ended up with things like this or this. Needless to say, I was a little disappointed with the way the Intaki mesh was designed and the "horse-faced" look (credit for that phrase goes to GM Radiance) that most Intaki ended up with as a result. (Also, don't get me started on cheekbones. Just don't.) On the night before the editor was released to TQ (literally, I think with two hours to go) I came up with thesetwo, and was pretty happy with them, all things considered.
And then Incursion launched on TQ. And with it, a bunch of stealth changes to the Intaki sculpting mesh. I went from something reasonable to something that made me wanttovomit, it was that bad.
There were more changes overnight, and were given free resculpt tokens almost immediately. I managed to come up with something a little better, but still not quite where I wanted them. Errant cheekbones and oversized noses still hounded me. This and this were the best I'd managed by the end of that attempt.
We got another resculpt a few days later. This is one of the attempts I made, but I believe I settled on this one for that round.
I lived with that until Incarna was launched, at which point we were given another free resculpt. The end result was this, which has more or less been the base of my portrait since. My current is obviously quite visible next to this post. :P
I made this one on Sisi at one point (using what is now the female Sterling shirt available in the Amarr FW LP store), and was messing around hte other week and came up with this.
I think the end result came out well over time - a character that's intended to be a combination Gallente/Intaki using the Intaki base. |

Ooo Fun. Well if we want to post an Avatar history. This could get interesting.
Iria ala Revelations. And I would like the old dresses and hairdos to make a comeback. Her face lookes alright when it is small, not so great blown up.
After we switched to the new editor I stuck with this version of Iria for a while. Then I got back from sea I noticed the resculpt and wrongly thought that the new morph ability was implemented. Oops.
This was my first re sculpt attempt. But even though I liked it, it seemed lacking somehow. My current avatar should stick now, although when the morph ability comes in, I'll give it a look to see if I can achieve something unique and good. Anyone else?
When the editor first came out and all the 'beauty contest' sites and threads popped up, I did spend quite a bit of time making perfect female characters. At one point I had 5 characters in the top 10 on all the popular sites that were up at the time.
I don't spend as much much time these days as I only make four new characters every six months and I need to keep them pretty generic as they are created solely for the character bazaar.

Old Halete . Essentially barely changed - but unfortunately I don't have that image. The straightforward hot-heated young Minmatar pilot with a chip on her shoulder and a tiny ship.
Went on a stint as a corporate and ended up with the extremely bitter, cynical dirty tribal in a suit.
Changed dresses as I change 'Outfits' and ended up with broken necks in my attempts to settle on a portrait during the time as clipping issues existed with the dress at the time, as well as getting more inked and re-pierced.
As she interacted with more people (and indeed explored boosters) we started to see a softer side infrequently emerge.
Separating from that unit, Halete found herself more comfortable in the clothes she wore as a free-lance before taking to the boardroom, sporting a look that was more her, more attitude.
Although she still finds herself in the boardroom from time to time, she's quite undeniably Minmatar and stronger from her journey.

I have probably spent around 12-15 hours total in the character creation screen in .5-1h sessions not to make my old pc run out of memory.
[offtopic] The character creation screen is the only place I use good quality graphics since having it while playing will kill my memory under the hour giving me 5-10 seconds memory dumps. [/offtopic] |

Yes, that's one of the most amazing feats of the creator. Even now that we can store the pose, the characters refuse to look the same because of the intrincate interaction of animations and timing. One of the most difficult things to achieve when I fine tuned Indahamwar's last portrait was to get that her lips looked exactly as in the first shot.
One of the tricks i use when it suits the portrait, is to wait for the "natural smile" that cycles each 30 or 40 seconds. That allows for a more or less accurate timing of the shot (albeit I think it's not exactly synchronyzed to the breathe animation).
