If you have issues with not loading after splash screen, check this:
Change in PREFS.INI
Quote: bitsCancelled=1
to
Quote: bitsCancelled=0
and set file read-only afterwards, to prevent client from changing it back to 1.
Got this hot one from here. Note the blog comments.

I'll try to sum it up:
Since Dominion EVE uses a background update function called BITS. It's the same background loading mechanism like in Windows. In combination with a specific issue on current Ubuntu kernel, this function locks the client startup somehow. Setting it to '0' (not '1') leads to circumvent this behavior.

Today I found this one. Far better then write protecting the prefs.ini ;-)

Just delete the prefs.ini, it should be rebuild automatically on next client start. And then check post no. 5 for disabling BITS more nicely.

Make a new file on your desktop with this content:
--- #!/bin/bash
sed -i 's/bitsCancelled=1/bitsCancelled=0/' ~/.wine/dosdevices/c\:/users/(YOUR USERNAME)/Local\ Settings/Application\ Data/CCP/EVE/c_program_files_ccp_eve_tranquility/settings/prefs.ini
wine ~/.wine/dosdevices/c\:/Program\ Files/CCP/EVE/eve.exe ---
Watch it: Insert your username in that path and these are only two command lines! Just to be sure, check this Example.
Save and right click on it and go to access rights tab, make it executable (checkbutton).
On double click it now should do the manipulation and client start afterwards. Now you can be sure, new settings can be saved and this specific entry is set to the workaround value each start.
