In my experience, most Mensans tend to keep their membership a secret, because if they don't they get branded elitist jerks. My experience has been *significantly* different. Mensa is actually the "low end" of genius groups, but it attracts the kind of people who really, really, REALLY want to tell you about them being in Mensa. Bragging about being in Mensa is a lot like Al Bundy bragging about the four touchdowns he scored in high school. If you want to be impressive, join Prometheus Society or Mega Society. One out of 50 monkeys can join Mensa, provided they can juggle balls well enough. In that case, allow me to apologise on behalf of Mensans everywhere. What you've seen are hopefully the odd cases (the 2% of the 2% if you will); people who forget that we only care about math/logic and nothing else. The ones I've met (be it at formal or pub meets) usually agree that intelligent does not equal smart, and therefore prefer to listen before speaking. (wait, does that say anything about me?) Heh, indeed indeed. Listening before speaking is a sign of a high smart quotient. When I meet someone like that at a party, they usually turn out to be the real deal. For example, a materials science researcher, rather than a tech sales regional director. |

I took one of their online tests (on the official website) and managed to get 100% in about 10-15 minutes. if you're good with patterns, it's nothing to get. unfortunately, my effectiveness at finding patterns can sometimes cause an OCD level of wanting to fix something so the pattern fits. EDIT: and I have no intention of joining them. the stigma that I've heard from this group is almost as bad if not worse than Scientology. |

Seriously? Comparing a high IQ society to Scientology?
Scientology: Forced Abortion, Child Slave Labor, Concentration Camps, Murder, Molestation, Paramilitary, Responsible for the single largest security breech in the history of the US.
MENSA: Stuck up, lacking style, self-interested, etc.
Really?

I qualified for mensa when I was a teenager. Met a few of the members, didn't care for them. It's an organization for smart people to sit around patting themselves on the back for having the right genes and being born in the right place to put them to use. It's time to put an end to CCP's war on piracy. Fight your own battles and stop asking CCP to do it for you. |

I am not saying you are incorrect, I am however saying that this sort of thing might be of use to me.

Oh absolutely, I don't deny that there's a bit of back-patting going on. But, how is that different from any other club? Let's say you're really good at driving motocross, so you join a club. In both cases you do it so you can spend time and share ideas and experiences with your peers.
Never really got into the lofty goals Mensa has for the world at large, so I can't say if they actually amount to anything worthwhile. What I do know is that among other things I really, really enjoy going to a pub with them and discuss stuff for hours. Tends to go extremely nerdy early on, but we like it that way. Can you do that without being a member? Certainly, but if you are it's virtually guaranteed.
That, and knowing that I qualify makes me feel quite smug which almost justifies the membership fee on its own. |
