The only requirement is that you score on a legitimate assessment within the highly gifted range(2% of the population).
Here is my dilemma, I have taken many many tests and assessments over the years, especially when I was younger. I don't have the records in front of me as they have to be requested but I think I remember scoring high enough to qualify on one of the tests I took when I was 17.
However this is something that follows you forever and is essentially tied to your membership to MENSA.
My question is, should I pay the money to be retested and potentially score higher, like in the 140+ range or should I just jump through the hoops to get a certified copy of one of my older scores and use that to qualify for MENSA?
I want my initial membership score to be something that accurately reflects my talent, not something that is barely passing that I took when I was 17.

google failed you.
"mensa" or "menso" means dumb (mensa if female, menso if male)
Abundant examples of the word mensa/menso are available on the classic show "El chavo del 8" ... linky
PS: Not to be confused with "mansa" or "manso" which means docile. |

If you're so convinced you'll score noticeably higher, just do it anyway, you never know what else it could be useful for. I really do not need help getting into something like MENSA... You should know this more than most people. It's just a matter of what I want my entry score to be.
Do I want it to be just above entry requirements (my score from a test I took years ago), or do I want to spend the money to take another test and potentially score way higher because of how I have developed intellectually. Xenuria Rising |

there's no real benefit about joining mensa other than finding friends with higher test scores. just because two people scored higher tham most people, doesn't mean they have the same interests.
take america for example, poor education yet there is punks, goths, skaters, ravers, atheists, christians, muslims etc... so even if you do join mensa, you'll have to work hard to find a friend worthy of playing eve with. |

I too though about joining, just because I can, but I don't really like mensa as an organization. They seem like cocky assholes that think they are better then others just because they score high on IQ. |

Protip - Mensa is also a business, while worthwhile to find out the exact number of your iq for yourself, I don't see the point in bragging about it or joining clubs for the people who do give a damn about it. Hell, just on the tea break between the two tests it was readily apparent everyone was up their own arse as was probably I in retrospect at the time.

My experience has been *significantly* different. Mensa is actually the "low end" of genius groups, but it attracts the kind of people who really, really, REALLY want to tell you about them being in Mensa. Bragging about being in Mensa is a lot like Al Bundy bragging about the four touchdowns he scored in high school. If you want to be impressive, join Prometheus Society or Mega Society. By the way, you might want to check out the members' photos on your local Mensa chapter's website. Style and suavete may not be Mensa members' strong points. |

Oh absolutely, I don't deny that there's a bit of back-patting going on. But, how is that different from any other club? Let's say you're really good at driving motocross, so you join a club. In both cases you do it so you can spend time and share ideas and experiences with your peers.
Never really got into the lofty goals Mensa has for the world at large, so I can't say if they actually amount to anything worthwhile. What I do know is that among other things I really, really enjoy going to a pub with them and discuss stuff for hours. Tends to go extremely nerdy early on, but we like it that way. Can you do that without being a member? Certainly, but if you are it's virtually guaranteed.
That, and knowing that I qualify makes me feel quite smug which almost justifies the membership fee on its own. |
