I have the market window, items window, three chat windows, and the station window open. I click on an information bubble in the market and instead of bringing the small window on top of everything it extends it to the width of my market window, snaps itself to the market window and pushes my local and corp/alliance windows up to the top of my screen.
I can't see an option for "don't screw up my UI, just open new windows on top of everything else" anywhere, how can I fix it?
What's worse is sometimes it does that, sometimes it's this stupid resize+snap garbage. I don't know why.

align as few windows as possible. try to keep free space between. their auto-align is worse than none. ________________________________ : Forum Bore 'Em : Foamy The Squirrel |

You can set snap to 0. It's an utterly shoddy UI isn't it. ~

While not a solution something that can help is an option named something like "lock window when pinned" in the general options window.
When this option is on and you pin the windows they'll never move.
It's not perfect as you'll need to unpin them if you want to reposition the windows and it takes a little while to get used to them being transparent but it does avoid the annoying issues like you describe.

I always wondered what the actual point of the 'pin' was without that function turned on - Common sense would say that pin=locked-in-place, when in reality, pin=no-effing-difference unless you turn on the option in the menu. Gotta love the wierd logic of the ui :P Non Moritur Cuius Fama Vivat He Dies Not Whose Fame Survives |

I used to have this pain in the ass problem, but finally got it under control. There are two settings, only I can't remember exactly where they are, but shouldn't be that difficult to track down - I found them.
1. Somewhere in the escape menu there is an option for something like "Snap to Grid = xxx" you need to blank that numerical value so that it doesn't snap.
2. Somewhere else - I think the escape menu too, but it might be a window right click settings option:- there is a checkbox where you toggle to use the shift key in order to have windows lock together - eg like the channel windows are all stacked together with tabs to select them. Set it so that you have to hold down the shift key to get two windows to join together as you hover one over the other.

This - first thing I do when installing a new client (as well as switch off targetting crosshairs, 'use same info window' and auto target back)

I find my ship exploding less stressful and invasive than the UI. Maybe CCP designed it that way, to be the worst UI known to humanity as a kind of perverse test. I've given up with it and would love to be able to mod it but of course can't. Pinning does not really work for me and it's a bad compromise anyway. Why they can't just let the settings stay as decided by the user I never know.

Clearly, none of you whiners *ever* used the original Everquest UI. The damned thing required you to write stuff out with crayon's, tape it on the back of a narcoleptic ferret who's never had his ADD medication, and then send it off to SOE HQ in San Diego via convoy's of wayward homeless chickens.

When it works that is.
It doesn't always work and you have to go back and uncheck the "lock windows when pinned" option to put windows back where you want them. I find the drone window is particularly susceptible to this problem.

At least it never changed the 'windows' positions.
CCP should take some of the features of the 'not so old' incarnations of those EQ interfaces, would be a great improvement

1. Open the Esc menu 2. Go to 'General Settings' 3. Click on 'Window Snap Distance' 3. Set it to 'Don't Snap'
Your windows no longer interact with each other in any way, they freely overlap no matter what you open or have open.

QFT
How about a importable/exportable file of UI fittings that would select which windows are open and their X,Y,Width,Height. Naturally, this could not affect nor effect combat windows and would not work if you were undocked with an aggression timer, since Hello Kitty would be sad if someone too lazy to download a 1k file felt the game was too unfair if they were at a disadvantage.
Thx all for some suggestions to try. Are these settings importable/exportable or saved on the server? Or will I have to redo them after every cache clear?

I should note that double clicking on a pinned window will reduce the size to just the title bar, while maintaining the position. I do this regularly with my local window when I am in highsec - It is always pinned next to the solarsysten info, but for highsec/non war I keep it 'minimized' by double clicking.
Helps keep the window both out of the way and transparent.. OHGODS BELOW THIS LINE IS MY SIG !!!! SRSLY! Blane Xero > Lance is at -0.9 sec status with a 1 million bounty. Lance is also amarrian. Thats 3 evil points |

So you're saying because there have been worse things in the past it's okay to have crap now?! I guess this justifies just about anything we have right now - except the things that set a new record for suckiness, of course.
Well done! Now we can all be happy with what we have...

I'm reporting this post and I'm going to be suing you for causing me to spew water all over my keyboard.
I've also found that if you go into the options and change the "snap to" distance to the lowest possible, which I think is 6mm, then the UI tends to get pushed around a bit less.
Honestly, EVE has one of the worst UI's for any game I've ever played. It may be the best MMO ever made, but the interface needs a major overhaul.

This. Pinning works sometimes, but not always.
