So, I have tried everything I can think of, but Eve is still causing my PC to lock up whenever there is a Session Change. And I really do mean lock up, I have tried the Ctrl Alt Backspace command and it doesn't respond. Last Night it crashed on login, causing a Hard Reboot, which corrupted my Filesystem causing me to have to re-install Linux :(
I'm using Linux Mint 8 and the ATI driver, so can anyone tell me what version of Wine I need to get EvE working, or, failing that, a way to get eve working in a XP VM?

First, the most stable versions of wine seem to be 1.1.31 - 1.1.37.
To your crashes:
Ctrl+Alt+Backspace does not (anymore) work out of the box since someone deciced that this feature could confuse or alienate new users. Therefore, you need to enable it first.
It seems really strange that a simple game could hardlock your computer - unless you run it with root permissions.
For me that looks like a driver or configuration issue ATI drivers need sometimes careful handling in the xorg.conf.
Have you tried to use a text console and kill your x-server manually?

Sounds like the jukebox bug. Remove or rename the jukebox directory in Eve's resources directory. Or disable in-game sound.

I (had) already did (done) that. Game still crashes on any session change EXCEPT undocking for some reason. Have both In game sound disabled and Disabled in WINE.
As for the Alt+Ctrl+Backspace, it does "work" for me, as it works sometimes when I crash, sometimes it doesn't.
I'm going to find out how to install two versions of wine (as the sole other Windows Program I use only works on 1.1.40 :() and see if I can get it working on 1.1.31-37

The finger is now pointing at the ATI driver. There is plenty of historical threads on dealing with it.
To answer your question though, Wine 1.1.37 is considered the best version at the moment.

I'm using the 32bit wine version 1.40 in 64 bit Arch Linux. Everything works well. I've used lower versions of wine also (in Mint I think I used 1.36). Some tweaks which were needed to get it going: install the d3dx9 driver and corefonts through winetricks, also use winecfg to run Eve in an "emulated virtual desktop" session with the resolution matching your native resolution.
I see you're using mint...I've successfully run Eve in Mint with the latest version of wine in their repository, plus the tweaks I mentioned above. I should add that I use an NVIDIA card, so I'm not sure about ATI problems.

Ok, so it's pretty clear that it is the ATI driver doing this. Does anyone know a way to fix it? I have tried searching but my GoogleFu is weak as I have not found anything helpful :(

The Radeon boys have been having some success of late, you didn't really need to necro this thread.
