Watching the ATX matches from this past weekend and I see a number of ships using smart bombs to deal with drones, if I have friendly drones or even fleet members beside me and fire off a smart bomb will they get hit too?
Any help is appreciated.
P.S. Any other newbs or anyone who has not done much PvP but is interested in learning, head over to CCP's You Tube page, they have posted all the matches from the 6 vs. 6 tournament matches that happened this weekend. They are very informative, even if just to learn about so many different ships. |

Yes they do. Smartbombs hit *everything* in range. Use at your own risk in high security space. |

Yup, though typically ships themselves are more than 5-6 km apart, so the smartbombs are not a problem. He is talking about smartbombs, not bombs launched by a stealth bomber. |

Koo, thanks for clearing that up. I had this idea for a fit with Smartbombs, and my friend told me I'd be inflicting damage on myself. Since I've been gone a lot, I thought maybe there was a change or something.

Smartbombs are very low damage compared to other weapons of the same caliber and energy use. They do hit everything in range, though, and do not have "tracking" issues. Thus, they are useful in a few cases:
- Anti-drone measure for large ships (fit a smartbomb to your battleship to blap any drones that get on you)
- Anti-tackler measure for very large ships (fit smartbombs to your carrier to kill frigates that are tackling you)
- In large amounts (a full rack), as a way to instantly kill small/vulnerable ships warping on top of you. This is used to good effect for camping in lowsec. See the Crielere gate in Rancer, or the Ossogur gate in Amamake.
- As a trap/surprise. I have been killed before because I was trying to tackle and get under the guns of a battleship, only to be smartbombed in the face.
They are typically not that useful on battlecruiser or smaller sized ships, since the medium and small smartbombs have very short range and very low damage. If you can figure out a way to use them with success, though, your enemy will certainly get a neat surprise. He could have been referring to how smartbombs hitting other people in highsec will get you blown up by CONCORD. (Or shot by sentries in lowsec.) |

Faction medium/small smartbombs are startlingly effective and also cheap.
