The series covers Guadalcanal (obviously), Peilelu (sp?), Iwo Jima, and Okinawa.

Just watched the 2nd part in standard definition because Comcast sucks ass. For some strange reason they have a bunch of other movie channels but no HBO in high definition... Screw service provider monopolies.

Peleliu is what I want to see, most horrific battle for the USMC in WW2.
Operation Stalemate II for a reason

...lol-stereotype/10
I mean, obviously every recruits that joined the Corps back in '41 were all protein shake-drinking gym fanatics!
It's not about them all being beefcakes, I did however expect a higher percentage of something resembling athletes. It's also the look in their eyes, focus if you will and how they move in the jungle. These just doesn't look the part of some highly trained unit. Bad directing and/or bad acting, something stinks.
Also tiny errors like Iceland being german held bring the overall down.
Muscles and look in their eyes ... British officer : "You French fight for money, while we British fight for honour." Surcouf : "A man fights for what he lacks the most!"

Wikipedia link describing the series episodes.
Read "Helmet For My Pillow" when I was a kid.
Robert Leckie went on to become something of a military historian and I enjoyed his work.
An old black and white film, "Pride of the Marines", has a good section on the Tenaru fight. When the main character of this film comes into his machine gun position - they kick out some guys who are already there. Leckie was one of those guys.
Another book I read as a kid was "Marine at War" by Russell Davis - Apparently, he and Leckie were actually both in the same unit and mention each other in their books.

I don't think it has anywhere near the caliber actors needed to top BoB. Also most of those doesn't look like marines, it looks like band camp on a jungle trek.
this is good... please inform us what a marine looks like
think he is confusing american marines who are little pussies with British marines who are mean mother ****ers who kick some ass :p

I'm still a little unsure as to what to think of the series. I don't feel any attachment to the characters at all, and to be honest, I still don't recognize a main character when he appears on screen.
So much of what made band of brothers so good was the character development that occurred though out the series, and coupled when you never knew what instance would be anyones last it did a good job of drawing forth some deep emotions. The Pacific seems to be deeply lacking in that regard, ever single person in the series could be killed tomorrow, and I wouldn't care.
I'm still holding out however, since the actions of the Japanese during the war could be an enticing story all by its self. Heck this has the potential to develop into a series about the Japanese soldiers as told through their enemies eyes, I have a gut feeling that it will drift that way in part.

...
I've got the DVD's for Band of Brothers but I've not seen any of The Pacific. However, I can see one problem with what The Pacific is trying to do and it's impact on identification with the characters.
The Pacific is trying to cover most of the war, from 1942 to 1945 where as Band of Brothers spent one episode on the time leading up to Normandy and then all but one of the rest on the 11 months that followed. Guadalcanal alone lasted about six months.
Organizationally, Ambrose, the author of Band of Brothers was dealing with just the people in one company where as, from looking at the episode schedule, The Pacific is dealing with several characters who were eventually in more than one division. So, here you're dealing with potentially a lot more people and a much longer period of time.
Another factor might be - that I for one - have seen Band of Brothers multiple times. I've got the DVD's and I've seen various parts of the series on such as The History Channel multiple times. The first time I saw Band of Brothers - I couldn't keep the characters straight either. There were a lot of them and while some were highlighted in a particular episode, many came and went just as they did in real life. It wasn't until I'd seen the series several times that I got to where I could remember more than a few specific characters and how they fit in the whole.
Anyway, as I've said previously, when considering your personal enjoyment of what you are watching - it is probably a mistake to contrast the two series - although it is inevitable that such contrasts will be made. Band of Brothers was such a stupendous success - that it's really unfair to anything that follows it to expect it to live up to it. No matter what anything else does - Band of Brothers and Saving Private Ryan came first.
It's like comparing any of the following Star Trek series to the original. Whatever the originals flaws - and the original Star Trek certainly had them - it was first, it created the genre and thus had a real advantage being compared to anything else.
So ... what I plan to do (lacking an HBO subscription) ... whenever I get around to buying the DVD's, like I did with Band of Brothers ... is to try and watch the series just for itself. Of course for me, having already read some of the books it's based on in my youth we'll have to see what kind of impact that has. I've probably read at least half a dozen books by Leckie who at one time was one of my favorite authors so to see him portrayed in this series is probably going to give me a different perspective than other people.
*shrug*

Guys, pacific just started man. Enough comparision and enjoy watching the series. If you don't like it, well, that's unfortunate, but don't have to watch it. Gonna wait? Go for it. I did wait for BoB, but I'm going to watch Pacific weekly.
So when Pacific is done, then you can compare between BoB and Pacific.
See you guys after third episode. Watching Pacific makes me want to play more Company of Heroes for even longer hours. ----------------------------------- Peace through power! |

Erm... most of the war?
How about half of the war.
WW2 kicked off in 1939 which makes it 6 years long. I realise that the land of the free and the home of the brave were somewhat tardy last time around (as indeed were the UK both with the actual declaration and then actually becoming directly involved) but there is really no excuse for not being able to count.
Still... at least they're making up for it by being really early for the next one.
