I've had people getting very excited after watching the trailers and after letting them knowing just how big and open ended EVE is...
Only to have them try the f**ing UI and realize you don't really see much of the cool internet spaceships while they are fighting in a fleet op, but just the (again) f**ing UI. Best part is when you have to lower everything to minimum and disable all the eye candy to play decently in a blob.
Yeah, that was a deal closer.

They are the same thing. Sociopath is just the newer term for Psychopath.

The UI IS ghastly of course. Another problem is that you need 2 accounts if you want to operate efficiently solo. Still sticking with this game (2 years plus and still just the one account) and loving it in spite of all its many flaws.

Edited by: John plissken on 17/03/2010 20:08:49 Yea, the UI ain't great, Yea the patches always break more than they fix, Yea the game is full of scammers, *******s, lunatics, psychopaths, thieves, liars, cheats & sociophobes, but i still love it, even with the wierd headaches & stress it gives me sometimes driving me to drink.... this game alone may possibly have been responsible for cutting about 50 points off my IQ & giving me the dumb, but i still love it.

I have tried getting 7 different friends into EVE since i started about 5 months ago...
1) I don't get it....you ARE your space ship?? let me know when you can get out or that DUST thing comes out.
2) *spin* *spin* *spin* *logs* That was fun....*plays WoW*
3) Star Trek online comes out in a month, lets go play that. *I facepalm*
4) I played before and mined.....was pretty boring. Ill try again *joins for 1 hour* *logs*
5) Eve is gay. There's no point or endgame.
6) Computer couldn't run it.
7) How do I fly? What do you mean double click? *Ok bottom of the barrel here*
Actually most say they'll play DUST when it comes out....so I have a small DUST corp already if they all actually join up.
One thing funny....i have my wife reading the Empyrean age novel now, and she has heard my stories on here. She is more of a casual gamer (see plays games like bejeweled, monopoly, Trivial pursuit....but she is in to the action slash games like Devil may cry, God of War, or bayonetta) but she actually WANTS to try out EvE....I'm kinda on the fence though about this....
She doesn't like it then she'll be upset she can't play with me.
But if she does like it....not only do i have to get a 2nd (maybe 3rd) sub....but then I worry I would have to give her all my ISK in game like i have to give my cash out of game already
Who else would get their wife playing if they could?? lol -------------- (Insert whatever you want here) |

Sadly, there's a bunch of reasons why most of the people I know quit after doing the trial.
Let's see... - Horrendous UI (I adapted, but I agree) - Lack of twitch gaming and instant gratification (other than missions) (I personally hate twtich gaming, some more instant gratification would be nice) - Loss of gear when you die (While technically true, you can buy spares) - Spawncamping (Sadly commmon) - Blobganking (Sadly common) - Lack of crowd control to discourage blobs (Anything to discourage blobs) - Can't pick the battleship 'class' off the bat (I personally like frigate ships best, but i can see how it can be bothersome) - Can't use titans/dreads/carriers in hisec (Thank god) - Lack of avatar (Wish WiS came out sooner) - Lack of story significance (Sadly it's not player-driven in the chronicles) - The effort to create a reputation (i guess their reasoning is, if they had to work to make a reputation, why not just put that effort to real life?) - General population attitude (I've seen this myself, lack of even a 'gf' more 'omg noob') - Feeling of unimportance (guy joined a large corp off the bat) - Lack of social aspect (guy joined an empty corp.. or maybe wrong TZ corp, i forget) - Unhelpful people (asked his corpmates what would be a good item to trade, and they said do your research, have to agree though, sometimes its like reading a linux help forum {RTFM noob!}) - Promotes griefing with few tools to defend against it(sadly true) - Too much metagaming (spies, alts) - Lack of solo aspect - etc. etc....
To each their own of course, it's a shame that forum-goers actively encourage people that dislike the game to play a different game, but i guess people like only like-minded people playing the game... I saw it alot in STO.

"It's boring."
"I can't get fun from eve. You are just flying around for no reason. What is the goal of this game?"
"Can i get out of my ship? Can i land on planet? Can i at least use joystick?"
"To long to train skills and can't speed them up. I want to pvp from the 1st week."

After making my speech about how good EVE was, I was worried that my work mates (most of them frantic MMO players) would think I tricked them into trying EVE. So I played it down a bit and told them that it can be a bit diffcult at first and yeah you kind of get to fly the cool stuff after playing couple years answers were...
- "Damn that sounds way too complicated, I just want to play" (guy is way smarter than me ) - "I'm just going to reactivate my WoW account" (he did.. 3 months later) - "I guess it's fun for PvP but I like PvE" (I tried to explain that you can do that in EvE too but he wasn't interested anymore). - "Yea I'll try it with trial" (never tried, or atleast didn't tell me).
I guess I need a new way to market the game, but to be honest, how do you sell a game you have to play 2 years to get anywhere?

Hah, I had one reading up on the lore on the wiki while stuck in character creation, exclaiming something like "What? Are these my racial choices? Corporate hive-mind n.azis? Debauched capitalists with plastic clothes and metrosexual attire? Enslaved tribal...what are these...som kind of goth punks? And...and slaveholding religious zealots that looks like freaky old geezers in robes? Who made this game? What are they on?"

They are the same thing. Sociopath is just the newer term for Psychopath.
A psychopath is someone who is born without emotions through a mental defect. They are incapable of love, fear, empathy, etc.
A sociopath is someone who lacks most human emotions because of the way they were raised. This tends to stem from abuse or being raised by wolves.
Psychopaths are usually of sound mind and are able to easily mimic other people's emotions. It's often difficult to tell when someone is a psychopath, whereas it's easy to determine if someone is a sociopath because they will be wearing your pets.
tldr; Psychopaths = born with it, cold, calculating, mimics emotions, likely makes up 78% of the Eve playerbase. Sociopaths = abusive childhood, bat **** crazy.

My wife plays. She earns more ISK than I do. She started out doing the carebear industrialist thing for a couple of years then moved out to 0.0.
She likes the people and the teamwork of the bigger corps and alliances.
What she hated the most was the immature males running around making demeaning jokes all the time and acting ******ed. :)

My nephew quit playing after 20 minutes because he couldn't figure out how to move his ship, I told him "double click in space just like the tutorial told you, you did do the tutorial didn't you?"
But as far as people not playing I can understand why, this game is really user unfriendly and a little boring but here I am 8 months later still playing

I keep trying to get my wife to start playing as I know she'd be able to make the amount of ISK I want to spend, but she thinks all the spaceships are ugly and wants pretty things to look at while doing her trade thing. =/

Originally by: Sonk We've all tried it, getting our friends to play EVE, if only for a little bit. Since EVE is pretty much an acquired taste (ie. not for everyone) this mostly fails.
What holds people back mostly from EvE is it's a Sci-Fi game. Most MMOs are the fantasy/medieval type. Plus, people like avatars to customize. One of the SOE's games tried a Sci-Fi like expansion...no one liked it and SOE is quick to bury that "experiment".
EvE has no avatars; no emotes; no housing; no gear to dress up in. It also a PvP based game. The most successful MMOs are PvE based, as well (no matter how folks want to claim otherwise).
I play Eve to try something different and especially to try out the market (which is the best in MMOland). To me, the 1# selling point for Eve is it's market and you can craft the epics, not do pointless raids for drops. If Eve was a fantasy/medieval game, it could topple WoW on it's market alone (come on CCP make one!).

Well a lot of things are already mentioned and sometimes I can see people's point.
What I've heard: 1.you are not a person, basically you're your ship; 2. the best way to progress is doing learning skills for a month and just do nothing? I'm not going to pay for that! 3. you never actually meet someone, even in stations everyone is in their own isolated dock; and if you do meet someone he/she is a dot; 4. factions and races don't mean anything as everyone just mixes into corps; 5. so everyone can declare war on your rookie corp and kill you whenever they feel like it? That sucks! Why is it so cheap to make a corp and share resources when that can happen? 6. EVE is far too complicated 7. You can't really invest a lot of time to progess faster, skilltraining is the same for everyone. Not any way to catch up with 3 year players; 8. those asymmetrical ships are so ugly, do I have to look at that all evening?? The devs never seen Star Wars or Trek? 9. Isn't there any storyline?
And so on ...

When Eve voice was introduced players had the option to pay for it. A few months later Eve voice was free but the Subscription price was raised. Then CCP claimed training skills while not subscribed was a bug. That was when my friend left.
