I log about two hours later than usual. No one else from our wormhole based corp is online. This isn't unusual, we're a small outfit.
My ship is still in ewarp into my pos as I hit the d-scan. This is the first thing I do everyday. With no local to tell me who's about we could be facing a full scale attack from one of the 0.0 alliances our static wh likes to dump us on.
F**k me. We are.
My scan shows 3 Ravens and a Tengu. About the same time I clock the emails informing me my corp mate's small pos is under attack. This isn't good. The agressors might only be few, but as far as I know my corp mate hasn't quite got around to buying defence guns yet.
Now he's only just put this base up. I don't even have the bookmarks so I have to scan down the Raven's for a warp in. This gets me inside the shields in my Buzzard. The pos tells me it's down to 33% shields. Damn. On the one day I've logged in later than usual.
But worse. Far far worse. There's a conspicuous lack of Strontium in the hold. You know what that means. No reinforced mode. Little chance I'm gonna be able to save the place on my own.
The offending parties belong to the 'Mostly harmless' alliance. But sadly they clearly lack the decency to live up to their name. Or maybe this is the 15% of them who aren't harmless. Eitherway I needed to act fast and stay calm.
There's no doubt that I've got nothing in my arsenal that's gonna worry 3 battleships and a strat cruiser. I could distract them, maybe delay them but it'd probably cost me ships and achieve nothing.
I jump in the trusty Badger II and snatch half the stront from my own medium pos. Warp back to the besieged baby and find out it won't accept the stuff once shields are below 50%. Not the best time to learn that one.
Shields are now at 28% and falling. OK, the place is lost so my role is damage limitation. Inexplicably my corpies have left quite a few ships in the hanger here. Miners, haulers, scanners, bombers, PVE and PVP. Including, tragically, an Orca. That I can't fly.
Before I head back to base in the badger I stuff as much of the expensive ore left in the corp hanger as I can fit into cargo. I ditch it all to safety and head back in my pod to start ferrying ships away.
I manage to save every single ship I can fly. But that's only about 2/3 of them. I'm sure the Orca gives me a sad final as I leave.
With the ships safed up, I return again in the badger to see what else I can preserve. The invaders are clearly a bit upset that I'm running off with 'their phat lewts'. Otherwise their tone is genrally amiable. If a bit smug.
There's noting left which the small pos will allow me to save now. I grab 90% of the expensive fuel and resolve to at least make the rest of the attack as difficult and time consuming as possible. Maybe our Orca pilot will log on and fly it out in the nick of time. Maybe.
I did consider launching the Orca out and blowing it to hell myself. What held me back was basically ignorance about whether it was insured or insurable anyway. And the slim hope that they may still not get their grubby hands on it.
After my last post I was kindly given a pretty solid nano drake loadout. It's been performing well. No kills sadly but I haven't lost one either. And it's done a great job of driving off k-space invaders trying to cash in on our pet sleepers. Most notably 3 Tengus, who gave up quite easily after not being able to catch me, whilst having to tank my DPS on top of the sleeper aggro for 20 minutes.
Now I sure wasn't gonna give these guys any T2 killmails on top of the every more likley looking pos death. So I hit them with everything my nano drake had in it.
I didn't think they'd have points fitted but made sure to keep them all at at least 40km anyway. Frankly they shrugged off my DPS, as you might expect. But while they were shooting me, they weren't shooting the pos. And their torps werent really troubling my sturdy battlecruiser.

We must have sparred for about 15 minutes with no real outcome before my failing shields forced me to warp back to my sanctuary. I'd taken out the few drones they'd sent my way and temporaraliy extended the life of that small pos. But what now?
By this point the pos shields were just about melted and there were 7-8 of them chatting in local. It was nothing personal but we'd landed on their doorstep and who could resist and easy target like this?
They still didn't know about the Orca.
I jumped back in my Buzzard wondering who the extra pilots were and what they were up to. My own med pos didn't actually have the guns up yet. We recently moved wormholes. But it was packed full of stront so I wasn't too worried. The invulnerability of the reinforced mode this provides would outlast any access wormhole. If they were planning to attack in any serious numbers they'd have to set up a base inside our w-space and I'd have plenty of time to rig up the defenses.
I was hoping these unidentified pilots might be waiting uncloaked haulers, ready to make away with our stuff. They certainly seemed pretty confident in their sucess. But no what I find is just a stealth bomber and a gila faction cruiser which has joined the mini pos bash.
The gila instantly translates to 'minor victory' in my mind. Especially as it's sitting a good 50 km from the rest of the attacking fleet.
Naturally, I warp on top of it and lay into it with the nano drake. Looks good for about 10 seconds. Then he starts repping his shields at soul destroying rate and even has the audacity to put a scram on me.
Could this possibly have been a trap? Hell yes. With the drake's MWD taken out of action my secret weapon takes a swift kick in the nuts from the Gila, 3 Ravens, 1 Tengu and a whole load of drones.
As it dies I'm spamming the warp to planet button and sure enough my pod carries it self away. Oh well, if I hadn't even lost a single ship I probably would have been enough to defend our turf. I say as much in local and the agressors commend my efforts.
I don't see any sense in throwing good ship after bad at them. And I'm not even sure I have any good ships to throw at them. So back in the Buzzard I watch cloaked as they finish off the pos shields and get to work on the armour.
I know they're gonna need to bring in haulers at some point so I switch to the Manticore and take position 30km of the dying pos with bombs loaded.
The pos goes down with a muted gurgled and sure enough, a mammouth appears out of warp and begins his approach. The beggining was as far as this guy was gonna get. My bomb hits sqaure on and he finds himself spinning in his pod. The theifing scumbag.
This is about my only real triuph throughout the sorry affair. I do make a point of also bombing the cans they stick their loot in in leiu of another hauler pilot willing to risk his ship.
The Orca is now sat floating in space with a pronounced 'save me from the bad men' expression on it face. Sadly I can't comply. 'Mostly harmfull' are pretty pleased with themselves as they fly away in our most expensive ship. But it's clearly now cursed with bad karma and will bring them nothing but woe.
It seems that it's all over. D-scans are clear and I take the chance to eat and roll a big fat...nevermind.
It's not long before they're showing up on scan again. I get ready to roll out the pos guns but they're no where near my pos and appear to be grinding away at one of our combat sites.
Well, the nerve!
I find 2 BS and 2 logistics going at the sleepers. A quick fitting adjustment to my PVE drake and I'm pummling one of the logistics with caldari navy specials. It doesn't seem to want to die though and the other logi ship appears to be remote repairing. Of course.

Edited by: DawnTreader on 24/03/2010 08:55:23 So I'm not gonna pop any of these ships either, but I can still make sure they're wasting their time with the sleepers. I make a few bookmarks, dissapear and come back a few minutes later to target and destroy every last valuable wreck they've built up.
This is quite satisfying. Lame as that may be.
They seem to give up now. But no less then 10 minutes later I find them again on another combat site. One of the logi ships had chased me to a planet when I was in the drake. So I was pretty sure it had point and would be happy to take me on.
So instead of blowing the large sleeper wreck I ninja the 8 mil of loot with my buzzard. Now I know that's gonna really wind them up, but they stay silent. As do I.
The rest of the wrecks are quicky surrounding by drones and the faster logi cruisers. No more ninja for the Buzzard.
But I've still got one bomb left for the Manticore!
I time the launch for maximum impact. T1 drones and half a dozen or so wrecks dissapear in a pleasing explosion. They leave shortly after and this is the last I see of them.
My former Orca flying corp mate logs on about an hour later. I've already sent him a breif email account of the loss. 'Mostly harmfull' have also emailed him to gloat a bit.
Understandably, he's not a happy camper. He's knows it was no genius move on his part allowing them the opportunity. But the guy is still out maybe 1.5 bil in assets that he's worked hard to accumilate. And tragically with the loss of most of his mining fleet, his ability to rebuild is also crippled.
So there you have it. An action packed few hours of a kicking and some painfully expensive lessons in pos defense.

Well written and informative.
You (and hopefully your corpmate) found out that leaving assets allover you don't have the manpower for to defend better be secured somehow (in this case by a larger pos and some defenses on it). Slacking on that because "you didn't have time to do that yet" doesn't count.
Have some fitted blackbirds in your ship hangar, you can't kill any attackers with it but you can annoy them and lower their DPS, especially if you're not the only one online.

Thanks. These posts just seem to get longer. I'm starting to worry about gamers concentration spa...oooOO look a bunny!
Yeah clearly some disipline is needed with this defense stuff. Without wishing to belabour the point too much, my mate is well aware of quite how stupid that setup was. So go easy on him, it's all I can do to covince him not to run and buy WOW.
The Blackbird is probably a good idea. To be honest. I think really we either need to recruit a few PVP'ers. (I'm the premier PVP'er in the corp, and if you've seen my previous posts you'll know what that says about our ability to defend our home). Or maybe try and sign up with another corp/alliance, who won't mind us mostly staying in w-space and might also wish to benefit from a class 3 WH outpost.
Leaving RAGE we went from one extreme to another. We escaped the oppressive regieme of incessant compulsary large scale military operations. And are left with my frantically fly around in different ships trying to look scary.

Yup, a corp that chooses/appears to be small, not really that active and didn't invest in defenses and/or PVP minded members while mostly focussing on optimising income is a pinata waiting to be burst open. Especially when living in "dangerous" space.
You probably won't be able to attract PVPers as they will want to... PVP, and there's nothing for them there other than the odd straggler so they won't stick around. You're better off to teach/rally your members so they start to invest into combat SP wise, shipwise and knowledgewise. They have to learn that security and asset defense is part of the whole equation and that this might harm their beloved isk/hour.

Well, maybe not hardcore pvpers, but at least a toon who can fit something other than a mining lazor.
With a 0.0 static and frequent links to other wh systems there's no shortage of pvp opportunies. And that's pretty much all I'm interested in personally.
But in a game which divides you into wolves and sheep. My flock could use some extra claws.

Edited by: ImNotCompensating on 24/03/2010 10:24:20 Hi ya, I'm the tengu's hauler alt that you bombed, gj!
It was a nice and polite little op with 4 friends, we gave you compliments and advice after you engaged in the drake, you where polite at first aswell but then suddenly turned rude and blocked. Still, stuff got blown up, it's alright.
Don't asume things based on naming, neutral means hostile to almost all space holding alliances.
Also don't keep orca's in small pos towers without stront in them.
Now help your corpie with his loss and teach him how to do it right.
fly safe o/
edit: oh and you where beeing chased by my cloaked tengu for most of the time but didn't get a good enough warpin since you kept moving using mwd so gj on that. That you engaged the gila with 3 other bigger ships on grid was a bit over confident though, live and learn.

We will bring more bubbles next time. It was so painful to see you fly hauler after hauler with the soon to be our stuff back to the other pos. The Orca is happy now when it can roam the great astroid belts of Branch.
We salute your bravery in defending your assets, and we salute the lack of stront in the tower.

No by trying to guilt us into aborting due to the mental health of the pos owner. Even in the unlikely event that it's true it's making it way too personal.

I bolded the part you understood the wrong way, I'll explain it to you so you might understand.
- your name states "mostly harmless" - he says that sadly, you don't live up to your name which means that you were better than mostly harmless
TL;DR, it wasn't smack at all.
Besides, MH IS mostly harmless; Part of the NC zerg and relying on MM and RZR.

Mr Compensating. I think both in local and here it's my sense of humour which evades you. Would anyway really expect an alliance to be less agressive because it was called 'mostly harmless'. Well, no. I was making what we humans call a joke.
Don't worry about it. I'm sure they'll be a new season of 'Everybody Loves Raymond' out soon to fill that void in your life.

What timezone are you active in? Im looking for some PvP opportunities that are not nullsec empire related (fighting against them is fine). I know Jack Poo about wormholes, but your writing amuses me, and that's as good of a reason as any to offer my assistance.
I have absolutely no references except a slightly amusing forum post listing my qualifications. Well, one guy said something in the thread was amusing, and it MIGHT have been my post. And I could just be making all this **** up! I guess what Im saying is that neither carebears trying to grow teeth or failed nullsec PvPers can be picky, so maybe we're a match made in the bargain bin :P

Thanks for the support and encoragement, public and private. I've been told I should post more and maybe even compile this stuff into a blog. Is that something you guys would bother to bookmark and follow?
I do like to write and I've a feeling there's a million and one great stories going untold on tranquility.
Salen, I hear what you're saying on your post and generally approve and sympathise with your plight in a 0.0 alliance. It's a great shame that the players who really know what they're doing are so often obnoxious and impossible to work with.
You're welcome to sign up with our motley crew. I have recieved a couple of intersting offers from more well established WH corps and will need to talk through our options with the rest of the guys.
So it's possible we may still sign up with a bigger outfit. But only if we're sure they're not going to be a bunch of emotially stunted f**kwits :)
