Before you flame me, let me say that I am a new-ish player wondering why a certain game mechanic is the way it is.
My question is: Why do mining lasers and strip miners pull ore in in cycles? Wouldn't it be more realistic for ore to be pulled in at a steady rate and appear in your cargo bay as such?
I know that if you stop your laser you'll see how much the laser or strip miner pulled in so far in it's cycle.
I am just wondering why this is... why there are cycles as opposed to continuous intake.
Anybody know why this is? Or why cycles are better/worse than a 'realtime' method?
Thanks

Because the server software would go wtfmad if it wasn't in cycles.

This seems more like a question to me

Because nothing in game is "realtime". Because computers do everything in "cycles", even. And what you talk about is basically
By mining in longer cycles you spare CPU power for calculating things which really require short cycles. Like moving.

i myself have posted fixes to make this system work in the current eve verse but they have been shot down by every none miner out there as apperantly its bad.
The main reasion why its done the way it is currently is that eve is based on a call and return system to the main eve server-cluster. when you lock a roid and start a laser the game client send a message to the server saying that " Im mining asteroid 0123123 in system Heblarg" , the server then send a message to the client saying ok, when you stop the miners or its cycle compleats the client sends another message to the server saying , "i have mined asteroid 0123123 in system Heblarg for 60 seconds" the server then respondes with a ok the rock had 45K veldspar in it and that means you should have X veld in your hold , and hence that much appears in your hold.
if the system where to make a call every second thats a lot of calls to the server , know multiply that buy several minign craft in a populated zone and you can get large fleet lag situations.
My last proposal on the subject was to make a " vaporized ore" that would be pulled into the ship as the miner worked once the cycle compleated the client would call the server with its amount of vaporized or vs the ore in the roid, asuming all the numbers matched the vaporized ore would turn into regular ore
