They're still there. They just added a YuGiOh-esque 4th rarity called "Mythic" :p
Individually they're more rare than rare but there are also many fewer Mythics than Rares so your chances of getting a particular mythic are more likely than getting a particular rare.
Personally I'd like to see them drop the good dual lands down to uncommon or even common rarity, I mean they're pretty much REQUIRED to have a competitive multi-color deck anyway... but then I guess Wizards wouldn't sell as many booster packs ________________

You all are bringing up some great memories.
The following was one of my friends prime first hand draws in his goblin decks.
lotus, mox, mountain, 1/1 goblin, goblin grenade, fork, lightning bolt.
Hated getting smacked with that 13 combo one the first round. It did not happen a lot, but when it did boy would I not be happy There were come crazy scrambles after getting smacked like that before you even lay a card out.
My most favorite card of all time was the Chaos Orb

I was just browsing MTG cards for some inspiration for EVE CCG mock cards. Then I found this .
The game's sure changed since pre-5th edition (when I played)... :-| _

HURRRRRRRRRRR DURRRRR HERP DERPA DURP
That's pretty much how I feel about WOTC's card design.
At least you can't cheat it into play and still get the extra turn (since you have to play it [cast is a crappy verb]) and can't get it from the graveyard at all.
On the other hand maybe it's time to start building a deck around Mox Lotus :p ________________

Consider yourself lucky you never saw any of the more broken blue/black combo decks. With some of them it was possible to combo off and win the game before your first turn. --- 34.4:1 mineral compression |

Yeah I saw and competed against those decks. I just refused to play those guys after awhile. We played relatively friendly games and did not want to get to a point that we all wanted to try to win right after the draw.
Most of my friends and I were relatively casual players and had no urge to officially compete with our decks. I rarely used a deck for a whole week. I was a perpetual experimenter. Of course the two local guys that had the 1st round win type of decks went on to win some big tournaments and are both very successful online poker players, that do not have to work "real" jobs

a pure blue counterspell deck can't have pretty much the best counterspell ever. ---

holy ****, the omfgbane card of all omfgbane cards. that enchantment makes combos with soooo many cards that any red deck that didn't had it, wasn't really a good red deck
most classic combo, however is the Sneak attack + Serra Avatar ---

One of my all-time favourite blue/black combos is Traumatize/Guiltfeeder. Writ of Passage forecast on the Guiltfeeder works nice too.
