Dunno if the local chat stuff is handled by the same solarsystem node but if it is, could it be externalized to completely separate system. You could utilize XMPP ( http://xmpp.org/ ) for it and all other chats in eve.
I don't believe it would be many work hours for implement that into eve.

But I'd imagine that the solarsystem node has somethign to do with chats because you get LAG in chats too when the node is not keeping up with the demand....
I have never experienced in IRC or jabber chat lag as bad as in EVE.

I was under the impression that the major "local" exploit that has been going around only existed because the chat client is separate.

I don't think so. I mean completeletely detached subsystem from the game itself. like the new ingamebrowser. you can browse pages FAST while the game is responding once a minute or so.
only bit of information that chat subsystem would need is the player (id, name) information and the solarsystem (id, name) they are in. from that info its just a matter of putting players to the appropriate channel.
****** episodes in IRC where people flood the channel does not affect at all. its just plain text. though servers have policies for flooding etc.

the chat server is an IRC server, which is already seperate from the game server. the slow part on the client side is the text rendering imho.

This does raise an interesting point though. I wonder if it would be possible for CCP to implement some sort of "triage" for node services. It seems like the node would be handling a lot of non-essentially items during a large fleet fight. As part of the node reinforcement process is it possible to begin despawning items that tie up resources? Leave belts but despawn all asteroids and the like, as noone is going to be mining in a 500+ ship fleet fight. You'd have to leave anything of any tactical significance, but I wonder if something like that would put a dent in the lag. "Aghast the devil stood and felt how awful goodness is." |

As long nobody starts mining during the fleet fight, it shouldn't really matter.

Unless a player is on the grid, it goes inactive already (I think). _____

which wouldn't be so bad if people would man up and take their ass whooping vice ascii pic spam and the infamous FOFOFOFOFOFOFOFOFOFOFOFOFOFO.....
if people grew the hell up, only local spam would be the gf spam at the end (which is good spam, gave it both ways as victor and defeated...good fight all I ask for really lol).
