Is it me, or does it seem wrong that when you are "moving around" the planet, to view different parts of the planet, assumed to be camera drone? That the lighting never changes, as in you are actually rotating the planet, rather than rotating the camera. When I scroll around to the dark side of a planet, it should be dark.
That really bothers me, but maybe not others, just wanted to throw that out there.
I love the new planet interaction, the textures are beautiful, the industry, the science behind it, how there is still a degree of complexity behind it, I love all that, but then you throw in the view mode that actually spins the planet around, just seems weird.
I guess you could argue that when you are in planet mode you are only looking at a model of the planet, like a scaled planetary globe.
Anyway, curious to see what others think about that.

I think your being stupid.
You know how scan probes are annoying to use with the shadows, imagine that on the planets.
It'll just be annoying.

Thanks for the insult, that is very mature of you, what are you 12?

It really is not so bad on most planets, but I recommend looking at an Ice world and when it looks like your staring into a glowing light bulb everywhere you turn, you will see my point.

Well I see what you mean! You must assume some kind of probe is relaying the PI to your POD. I was able to dock at a station while in Planet mode and still do anything I wanted to on any planet. When I switch Planets I simply undocked, selected the planet from my overview (or right click) then after clicking view in planet mode, Docking again.
With everything having realistic simulation in EVE how can the probe move so fast? and as Zodd says how can there be light on the darkside of a planet?
They are both valid points, but when this was announced it was going to be an easy thing for new players to get to grips with. Now it seems overcomplex for a casual player, requiring you learn an awful lot of stuff just to get started.

I don't believe PI was ever intended to be "easy" for new players. CCP has said that it would be AVAILABLE to new players (low skill/isk costs to try it out)

Not only does it not bother me, I actually kind of like it. Since planets don't actually orbit their stars, nor rotate on their axes, the planet view introduced with PI is the only way we have to see what is on the permanently dark side of the planets. |

Permanent side of the dark planet? There are not planets that rotate around a star? What planet are you from?

You should pay more attention. They do rotate.

yeah thats something thats easy to overlook but would definately add to the experience if it was fixed. There are lots of cool ways to show different planets at night, however I DO NOT want to ever see the sun in the back ground. I hate playing EVE at night and then having the giant nebula lights white out my screen when i probe. if this means that I dont have to deal with the star blinding me then so be it.
On a side note, has anyone ever see representations of what the sun would look like from pluto, not very bright at all. Why is the sun exactly as blinding no matter how far away i get from it. That is way more wide spread and unrealistic. The entire solar system is exactly the same brightness. What happened to the dark recesses of space.

Edited by: Your Client on 30/04/2010 09:32:25 even some light shadows would give you a point of reference of where you're at in relation to your command center or other initial point you started thinking of beginning operations - especially on gas planets.

Aren't we connecting to satellites orbiting the planets? That's what I thought anyhow. And as far as the lighting goes it's most likely a visualisation of the planet rather than the actual planet, all brilliantly computed by your awesome pod-computer (or the mentioned satellites)

I assumed I was looking at a display of the planet, not the planet itself. Kind of like looking at a 3D holographic map.

psssst. While docked, open your Solar System map, right click a planet and view in Planet mode. No need to undock at all.

It was exactly the way you want when first introduced, and it was terrible. You should have been there that time to not bring this topic to life. /shoo -- Thanks CCP for cu |
