Wasn't that more of an opportunistic "bail-from-the-sinking-ship-with-all-the-valuables" deal than a premeditated heist? _______________________

I read an article in PC gamer about a "heist" in EVE, that article is what made me start playing actually.
Some guy who ran a bank in EVE, or maybe not ran it but at least had access to the wallet where all the money was held. He made off with it all, sold it for real life cash to buy his sick son some medicine he couldn't afford and pay off some of the mortgage. I don't remember exactly how much was stolen, it was somewhere in the hundreds of billions.

As far as I know, there's been no scam larger than EIB thus far. IIRC he got away with close to 700 billion in liquid isk and another 100 bil in assets, leaving a fair chunk of assets untouched. Parrots, commence!

for its time, the GHSC one back in the day was pretty major.
haargoth popping bob was rather monumental for what it eventually caused. karttoon's was just kinda bailing, wasn't it?
all three sort of stand out, never really read much about what happened with EIB (though, I know 'enough' to be familiar with it).
As far as story wise and stuff, those are the four that popped into my head straight away. and, if it helps any, I got rid of that annyoing line in my sig. |

Edited by: Alice Celadon on 04/05/2010 08:07:49 The scammer you read about was Ricdic. He probably is responsible for the biggest heist in straight isk value.
If you took into account isk value of the heist as compared to the total isk value in game at the time of the heist, GHSC wins. Not many titans existed, and isk was scarcer when that happened.
edit: How much did ricdic take? Officially, a few hundred billion. I would contend he actually made off with over a trillion [he approved a mess of loans that mysteriously defaulted right before he left -- I suspect this is how he circumvented the RMT problem].

Not sure what GHSC heist this is referring to. As far as I know the biggest relative scam they've made would be the one Misty and her corp, Causing a total of some 30 bil in damage, in 2005.
Nightfreeze would probably also be in the top counting relative values, even if he didn't actually net more than 500m or so, but very early in the game.
As for ricdic, I'd have to read up on it. I was under the impression that he really only made it off with 250 bil in open isk and another 300 or so through indirect measures, but maybe there was alot more lurking aruond. Parrots, commence!

The Istvaan Shogaatsu Heist, without a doubt.
5AM, April the 18th, 2005. Mirial, CEO of the giant Ubiqua Seraph corporation, warped into the Haras solar system with her most trusted lieutenant. And at that moment, a single word was sent silently, secretly and simultaneously to operatives of the Guiding Hand Social Club across the galaxy. 'Nicole'. Mirial wouldn't leave alive. ________________________

Hmm, refreshed my memory on the GHSC scam I mentioned(and O'connor mentioned). It keeps getting valued to $16'500. EIB is valued at up to around $170'000. Mind you these are ten ton hammers and similiar comparissons, not exactly scientificly proven, but I can't really come up with any better way. Ricdics scam is harder to value, but seeing how it's 3-4 years later and all that's confirmed to be his gain is no more than 250b I can't really see it competing. Parrots, commence!

What did you do? Lied to somebody.
How did you not get caught? Didn't tell them we were lying.
That must take some awesome skill. Not really.
But what did you do when they asked if you were lying? Told them we weren't. |

Rather, the said scammer claimed many things, including the 700B amount. Only semi-official info about that is comment of CCP dev that it was not that much (buried somewhere deep in related threads).
-Lasse at least nowadays we have official dollar to ISK ratios through GTCs

GHSC have probably have the best record for overall scams and total take, and have netted a few Trillion over the years. I dont know how much TT extracted from the Alliance (IAC?) he ran with the intention to scam everyone a couple of years ago.
After that the goons seemed to do pretty well out of scamming individuals with more money than sense.

I pretty much disliked Ricdic from the get-go, but I find the claim that he made off with ~1 trillion credible, even in the face of the official CCP number. Here's why: The problem with Real Money Trading is that if you just transfer isk into someone's account, it's easy to investigate and easy to reverse. An additional problem is for both parties engaged in RMT to trust that the other party will fulfill the bargain absent any enforcement mechanism.
This makes player run banks the single best tool for RMT. The corrupt bank loan officer does a test "loan" of ~5-10billion. Both parties involved see that the other fulfilled the bargain. The corrupt officer proceeds to give a much bigger "loan" of 100billion, and repeats as per his client's wishes. Considering that even EIB's board is still clueless about where all the isk went (even though they have an entire database and website devoted just to their funds), how well do you think CCP was able to distinguish between "Ricdic RMT transaction" and "Ricdic approved defaulted loan"? Do you think anyone on CCP staff even wanted that task?
Based on how thorough he was when he seemed actually motivated to do something, I will go further and say that the 250billion that CCP caught on to was a purposeful feint on Ricdic's part to distract from the actual RMTing he'd been up to the months before. Regardless, it is impossible for CCP to figure out the difference between bad loan and RMT.

Not a few trillion, just one. We broke the T mark just a few months ago.
Not a bad take for a handful of guys regardless
edit: (that's the total amount our corp's stolen since it was created, not a single heist. our biggest single heist is 220b-ish)
