I've been thinking about this for the past six months or so and I have a lot of ideas about how to make the interface a lot more appealing.
It will still require a lot of clicking, but that's a pretty moronic statement anyhow for a PC gamer. If you don't like clicking, then you're playing games on the wrong platform.
Anyhow, none of my ideas are explainable without a few illustrations and diagrams so I'll get busy on paint here one day and drop them into a post.

I wish you luck in your project, the current UI is clunky, incomplete, non intuitive, uses far too much white space, inane button and menu placement, inconsistent and completely unmodable. It's a very bad advert for new players. My personal take on it is also that CCP have no interest in improving it, I'm not even sure they see a problem or maybe its so integrated and badly coded it would take too much effort to do, but a better solution may be to open it up to the player base in the forum or LUA or similar. CCP won't do it so maybe let others do it for them.

You got my support, Nikita.
The current UI is simply stupid. It *works*... but it's clunky. I don't understand why CCP won't allow modifications, to the UI, that don't alter actual gameplay.
Allowing players to display the same information that everyone has access to, in a custom format, is not a ground-breaking concept. Heck, it's even helped other game companies improve on how they design their own UI's by being able to see what their players come up with.
EQ1 used to have a locked-down UI; that changed with Luclin, I think it was. The difference was like night & day, when the custom XML-driven UI's by players came out.
Open up the opportunity for players to design their own UI's.

Checkout JUCE's The Jucer or Koda From Designer, as far as free GUI design tools go.
No doubt there may be better GUI mockup softwares out there, I'm just getting the ball rolling. |

Honestly if CCP would just get some monkeys behind a computer it should improve the state of the UI, it cant get much worse for sure.
And fixing the crap in the current UI, which is proposed i think in assembly hall, not 100% sure though if it is that exactly, is a waste of time. The current UI is crap and should be shot, several times. Then you can make a totally new UI that doesnt kill kittens. Right now there are just way too many right mouse menu stuff going on, especially since every expansion adds new stuff there. And also simple things like checking corp info, it gives me 4 buttons with most of them being useless. I am sure someone sometimes uses show corp contracts, but serious does every empire corp needs to have the button which shows their sov systems?
Just open the UI for player modification, CCP has showed now they cant do it, and they only make it worse every expansion. (Look at the new chat channels button, serious can you find a place even harder for new player to find?)
Or another one for those claiming you dont need many mouse clicks, also that new players will always run into: You produced something. Production is finished, you are all done, panda is happy. However where is your stuff? Science and industry -> jobs -> get jobs -> click on the job -> deliver. Just to get the stuff you already finished producing :/

ccp -> ui -> xml based -> all problems solved
using a hardcoded ui in a mmog is from last century, but i doubt we will ever see a recoded eve that moves it into 201x. at last not in the next years...

It is not look of the UI it is its organisation. Show info and attributes tab is outrageously stupid organized and made it is so hard to look and compare stats. Make sure you do it so it is clear to read and better organized and easy to compare. Second thing i think that right click menu needs improvemenet.
My idea is for right click celestial menu this : menu opens there are planets asteroids stargates stations , lets say you go planets , hover , new menu , planet 4 hover , new menu , click warp to 0 , just make planet 4 clickable button so you can click it and go to 0 by default instead of moving yet another menu to the right or left and picking 0 ... if you want to go to set destination you could still by doing same what we do now final menu with warp at distance should not be removed. That would reduce 1 click and 1 less hover menu when you have to travel at 0 and that is used around 50% of the time i think i don't think it would be hard to code that as well. Eternal Will. |

A lot of you have good ideas and I think its great, but I think we need to get some organization down, if you want to contribute, join the forum, or the chat channels in eve or just send me a mail, I'd like to get a real discussion on this going among the playerbase.
Honestly, I can't do this alone, and not because I can't code, but because on my own, I have no idea if my plans are good or not, I need at least a few teammates so we can bounce ideas off each other and say, yeah that's a good idea, or no, that isn't.

Common misperception, tbh. There are parts of the UI that don't work. Especially traders know what I mean.
Then there's the alliance home screen that says "Dictatorial: No"
It's obviously an option but no way to change it. It could just be missing in the UI. VOTE CAT

Edited by: Makar Kravchenko on 06/05/2010 16:05:02 One complaint about the UI is that it gets very laggy when there is a large amount of objects trying to update, statics like ranges, velocities, ect. I have stated before I think this is and issue with pythons ability to efficiently refresh large amounts of text data, in another thread.
The only other issue I have is the amount of space windows take up. Especially chat windows. The chat windows in my opinion should be borderless or only by maybe a single line border to define that it is and entity separated from the rest of the UI. A Stack of chats, could be assigned to groups, where the group header (text at the top left corner of chat window) defines the type of info for that group, and then the group name followed only by horizontal pipe or comma delimited listing of subsequent sub "tabs" above the window that can be switch to by clicking or hotkey command. I know its probably hard to visualize, maybe I can mock something in photoshop and post it to this reply.
I pretty much think that all the windows in the UI should be built using this idea, we dont need EVERY window to have big bulky borders around them to separate their function within eve, that bulkyness wastes a lot of space and makes thinks look cluttered in my opinion. If you take these single lined bordered windows snapped to each other it saves even more space, and looks so much cleaner. As far as minimization and the ability to pin/unpin it could be a simple rollover at the top right inside corner of each window to display each option, pin, minimize, close. The same original idea of eve-onlines ability to shade, color, or transparent these windows backgrounds would still apply. Just remove the clunky borders which serve no purpose. |

I love the UI, it works for me. The only gripe I have is in station right clicking your ship to "make active" is adjacent to the "trash item" option.

Player made add-ons (WoW style) would be the best choice.
I do think the default UI is a little dated, and the whole "excel in space" complaint is certainly valid. However, the default EVE UI is worlds more functional than the default Warcraft options. It is a substantial problem, and of course you will never please everybody. Good luck on your project.
Honestly, I would settle for a few more key-binds.

Nope, I'm a new person, and its a new day. I'm not leading a crusade, I'm looking to make something to give CCP something to think about.
and people, this project will get nowhere if we aren't organized, don't post your ideas in this thread, please talk to me in game.
And I still need a few dedicated people to help me with this project, I have a vent server we can use, and I'm ready to really get to work here, but I really can't do this on my own. I need help.

almost as annoying as not being able to change the autopilot settings from outside the map, something which annoyed me a little more, and a little more, worming its way into my brain until I finally snapped and started redesigning the UI.
