Edited by: Basslet on 09/05/2010 07:50:20 Edited by: Basslet on 09/05/2010 07:49:12 After combing through various links and forum posts, I came up with this guide to get some friends up and running with EVE on Linux. They were coming from zero experience and managed to get everything working with no problems. This has worked like a charm on multiple systems!
Initial Setup: -Install Ubuntu on your system of choice and login. -Before touching anything, download the system updates and restricted drivers. Both of these will pop up automatically within a couple minutes of being online. Do not install the updates and the restricted drivers at the same time or you may get an error. -*Optional* To make your life easier, click on the main Applications menu and open Ubuntu Software Center. In the Search box, type in restricted, then install the Ubuntu Restricted Extras. This will install Flash, Java, and come media codecs to make your life easier. -Reboot once everything is done installing.
Wine Installation: [steps from http://www.winehq.org/download/deb] -Click the System menu -> Administration -> Software Sources. -Click on the Other Sources tab and click Add. Type in ppa:ubuntu-wine/ppa then click Add Source -> Close -> Reload. -Click this link to install Wine apt://wine. Alternatively you can use the Ubuntu Software Center or apt-get.
Configure Wine: -Click Applications menu -> Accessories -> Terminal -In the Terminal window type in this winetricks corefonts vcrun2005sp1 -> press ENTER. This will install fonts the game needs and the Visual C++ files needed to update the game later. -When that is complete, type in winecfg and press ENTER to open the Wine configuration application -Click on the Graphics tab -> enable Emulate Virtual Desktop. -Set the resolution to a resolution smaller than your monitor resolution. This will make sure you can see the entire window when it opens. You can adjust this later. -Click on the Audio tab -> wait a few seconds for a pop up to inform your that an audio driver has been selected -> click OK. -Click Test Sound (make sure you here something) -> click OK to close the window.
Download + Install Wine: -Download the EVE Offline Installer from http://www.eveonline.com/download/?fallback=1& -When the download is complete, right click on the .EXE and choose Open with Wine. If you closed your web browser download window, you can find the .EXE by clicking on the Places menu -> Downloads. -The setup will launch, click Next -> I Agree -> Install. -When setup is complete, remove the check from Run EVE Online -> click Finish.
Rename the Jukebox folder to fix the audio crash before it happens: -Click Applications menu -> Wine -> Browse C: Drive. -Browse to Program Files\CCP\EVE\res\audio -Right click on the Jukebox folder -> Rename -> type in a new name
Play EVE: -Click Applications -> Wine -> Programs -> EVE -> Play EVE. Also you can right click on the Play EVE icon and add it to the Launcher or Desktop if you wish -Enjoy!

Google is your friend!
First result for Error 1 Unable to Elevate http://www.eve-search.com/thread/1109365
You need to use winetricks (Run it without any arguments for a dialogue) or winecfg to change your windows mode to XP.

Hi,
I followed your guide to the letter.
But I got some error message when installing winetricks corefonts. ( arial32.exe sha1sum does not match or something like that )
So I went to the directory deleted the file and repeated the procedure it worked and I installed Eve, but now I cant scroll down to the end of the text because there is no text.
I had the same problem before when I was running Ubuntu 8.04 some years ago but I was able to fix it after installing the corefonts back then.
But now corefonts are already installed what now?

Using Ubuntu, I am having a similar issue:
When I try to configure winetricks corefonts, I get the following error message:
sha1sum mismatch! Rename /home/<my station name>/.winetrickscache/./arial32.exe and try again.
I know more about black holes than I do Linux (and I know absolutely nothing about black holes), so I am leery about playing around in the OS without some guidance. I have tried googling the error message, but what I get is link after link of people using English words, but actually speaking some other language.
Previous to finding this link, I've been trying to configure Wine to work with Eve, but for some reason it would only show the splash screen for the game, then drop everything out and leave me with a blue desktop that is absolutely unresponsive. I found this link and followed everything that I could, but now the winetricks issue.
Hopefully someone can help out with my error.
@Basslet - kudos to you for writing this geared towards people who don't know jack about Linux. It is much appreciated from someone trying to free himself from another OS.

If you are using Ubuntu 9.10 then it rather consistently triggers an Eve bug where Eve zombies after the splash screen. There is a decent fix for this but it's a good idea to just upgrade to Ubuntu 10.4 instead.

Regarding the fonts issue. I'd go a looking in [WINDOZE]\fonts\*. If you don't find a copy of arial.ttf in there then put a copy in by hand.

like I said, there is a arial.ttf I checked it several times tried to install it with corefonts, which didn't work the first time. second installation worked like a charm and the file is in the font folder which (from memory, but I think that correct) is located under: [username]/.wine/drive_c/windows/fonts/arial.ttf
is there any other advise except installing the font to the fonts folder? because I would really like to use it under Ubuntu 10.4! but if eve doesn't run there I'd have to install a windows, which I'd do rather not!!!
but thanks evey one so far

Ahh, my fault that I didn't report the version Ubuntu. I am using 10.4. I did a search for arial.ttf in my build and got nothing. I also searched for any file with arial in the name and found nothing. I don't know how to mount my Windows partition, so I can't search for the fonts, etc. on that drive (I did it once a long time ago but wound up really screwed up everything on my computer afterwards). I think I am going to boot my other OS and search for the fonts there, they try to copy them over to my Linux partition and see what happens.

As of tonight, I have managed to get the corefonts to work. I have gone through each step of the procedure multiple times to make sure each step has been completed/correctly configured and still reach the point where I see the splash screen for the game, then nothing but a blue screen which is my Wine desktop. No game, no text, no logon screen, nothing. The only way to get the wine screen to go away at that point is to forcequit and then wine won't work unless I either log out or restart my machine. I no longer get any error messages and have run repair through Wine successfully to make sure that all files for Eve are up to date. Any ideas?

Even with the latest patch this guide still works like a champ on my i7 core laptop running Ubuntu 10.04 with an Nvidia 330m 1gb GFX chip and the latest drivers. Anyone having sound issues with this type of setup remember to use software mixer not hardware in Wine, Ubuntu's ALSA sound is running through the Pulse mixer before it gets to your ears...

I found a workaround for this i was using PlayOnLinux and the general font directory it wasn't the same with the font directory of eve, which was empty. So you should find the two folders and copy the fonts from the primary to eve fonts folder. For it shoes like for every program had it's own Program files ,Windows , etc

I went through all of these steps, though not all in the same order as listed. Corefonts allowed me to get past the EULA. Turning sound off allowed me to get into the game. I wasn't able to change any settings while in-game or it would crash. I installed the Ubuntu Restricted Extras, and it allowed me to hear sound when I did the Wine.cfg sound test. However, I was still unable to get in-game sound because every time I try to turn sound back on, Eve crashes and I have to restart the computer. I successfully viewed a planet in planet mode from the science and industry tab, and made changes to my existing base; however the game crashed when I left the planet. I re-entered the game and left the station I was in, and it seemed to work fine except that it didn't load any graphics and gave me a blank screen. The cursor appeared to be correctly changing appearance over interactive objects on the screen, however I wasn't skilled enough to re-dock with the station under the given circumstances, so I restarted the computer again because I couldn't exit the game. (so far, I've never exited the game on Ubuntu, I don't know if it even works because it always manages to bug up before I try to exit)
Lastly, I updated my graphics driver from ATI's website, chose the most up-to-date linux version, and successfully installed it. Now firefox windows scroll slowly and choppy, and when I try to run Eve, all that happens is it opens the Wine virtual desktop and shows the Eve splash for a few seconds, then quits and returns me to the Ubuntu desktop.

I've been having sound issues as well. Just did a clean install of 10.04, got the restricted extras, nvidia drivers, and latest wine all set up. IF one of my toons can finish loading into station, only seconds later Eve freezes and the sound loops. Turning off the sound seems to fix it.
I remember a compatibility issue a while back when running wine under 64 bit with pulseaudio, something like the libasound_pcm_pulse.so in /usr/lib32/alsa-lib wouldn't work, so you had to copy over the 32 bit version from the libasound2-plugins package to get it working. Tried that, no change.
I'm also having an issue with winetricks installing vcrun2005sp1, it wants me to install the vcrun2005 trial first (3.3gb!), never had that issue before. I think I'm gonna try wine 1.2, what I had before installing 10.04.

This tutorial worked flawlessly for me. Thanks! My rig: CPU: Intel Core2 Quad Q9300 @ 2.50GHz (non overclocked) RAM: 8GB Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GTS Graphics Driver: (Proprietary) NVIDIA accelerated graphics driver (Cersion current) [recommended], (No tweaks were made to driver) OS: Ubuntu 10.04.1, all updates installed. As of the date of this post. Software: Wine installed exactly as instructed on this tutorial as well as winetricks. However, "winetricks" was an unrecognized command unless I typed in "sh winetricks (software package)". This was new to me, but it worked nonetheless. EVE: Running at 800x600 (Monitor is 1024x768), FPS averages around 80fps.
There are a couple of bugs still: - Flash does not work in the in-game browser. I tried manually installing flash for IE and alternative broswers for windows. IE flash wouldn't even install unless the installer was set to Windows 7 in wine. Still no luck. Although videos show up as a big black box instead of an empty space. - ssl does not work in the in-game broswer (no eve-gate, no browsing bank websites!)
What works: - Station - space - Compiz cube rotate (siiiiick), no drop in FPS. - Audio (warping/aura/etc) - stargate jumping - all textures and transparencies seem to work, even the stargate "wormhole" effect. Item icons are all there, absolutely *nothing* looks out of the norm. Planets look beautiful :) Cloaking works perfectly too. - All graphics settings on high with 24-bit color, 800x600
What has not been tested: (random) - market transactions - eve voice - fighting/mining/misc. EVE activities. - extended use (aka the test of time) (Graphics) - HDR - Resource cache - different color depths - bloom
I'll try to continue testing how well this tutorial and EVE works. Thanks again!

Edited by: Cave Lord on 12/10/2010 20:39:10 Tested this setup guide on a fresh install of 10.10... works *almost* flawlessly:
Manufacturer: Dell XPS 9000 OS: Ubuntu 10.10 x64 GPU: ATI 5800 series
What isn't working: - Stars are missing from map. (Everything in the map works, but can't see the stars) - Whenever the cursor changes from the default cursor, I get a white box around my cursor.
Otherwise, Seems to work as well as my above mentioned computer. Also, I had no trouble updating to the optional 1.1 patch.
Side Note: I created an entry for the EVE.exe so that my defaults could be changed and not effect EVE.

Update. I just updated my system to Ubuntu 10.10 running Wine 1.2.1 and this guide worked well but I had to do one thing different.
The original guide says Quote: -In the Terminal window type in this winetricks corefonts vcrun2005sp1 -> press ENTER. This will install fonts the game needs and the Visual C++ files needed to update the game later.
I could not get this to work. Instead I had to ...
wget http://www.kegel.com/wine/winetricks chmod +x winetricks
Then do a
./winetricks corefonts
I got the info from this site here.
I hope this helps anyone else getting this to run on Ubuntu 10.10

Any clues? I know its not particularly helpful information, but its all I got on the command line... The answer is ALWAYS 42.
