I'm assuming that this idea has been tossed around and discarded in the past but I wanted to see everyone's opinion anyway.
Roaming through null sec, it seems obvious in our game world that if a corp/alliance truly held sovereignty over a system, they would want to put up static defenses to guard their territory. I'm sure the fact that this is not an option now is because CCP wants to keep all of the systems freely accessible to all players regardless of skill. Currently the only deterant to a nood in a velator going into Delve or elsewhere are the local inhabitants that happen to be online at the time and whatever measures they are taking to stop neutrals and below from entering system.
To me I feel it would be a good thing to allow, however it would need to be limited. IE no more than 2-3 gate guns of any size on a gate. This would spice things up a bit for those of us that get a thrill from invading territory and then play the "cant catch me" game with the local blob trying to box you and stomp you.
Before I get a ton of people squashing the idea, I'm not talking about letting people anchor 50 auto cannon turrets, i'm saying a few to add to the realism of the game and to spice it up. If this where RL and humanity was out in the stars, you bet your ass the local authority having jurisdiction (AHJ) of the null sec system would have gate guns up regardless or their status as an official government that is part of an empire or not.
Just a thought. |

You want to have automated defenses that do NOT put players in any potential danger to guard null sec. And you think this will make taking over systems easier how? You are effectively entrenching something that is already barricaded and entrenched. |

I said nothing about the SOV holders not having to guard their territory. Anyone with any skill at all would be able to tank the guns or get out of range and warp off. They would be there to attack anyone not blue to the SOV holder and make it a little less boring in the majority of null sec. They Could also be another possible target for players to go after.
I do see your point though of making it even harder to take a system.
Just thought it would add to the realism a little. If i had a system under my control id have guns up on the gate to add to the firepower and make the intruder think twice before entering. Looked up...saw this F***ING clown dropping like a rock.-á Woke up in Vylade wondering what just happened!!! |

I'll admit that I've always it found it a little odd that massively rich corporations/alliances have so few options for defending their sovereign space, but it would hard to balance any such mechanic. |

Actually this makes a lot of sense.
Pros -Gate Guns are easily tankable -They exist in every highsec system -This technology is not some safeguard of the empires -There is very little actual defense technology, its fleet vs fleet -This is a Sand Box. You can always blow things up. -Tanked gate guns run out of ammo
Cons -Tenderness of pride after gate gun gets killing blow on you -Anchoring and Onlining them -Realizing Gate Guns need support and Ammo.

Warp Bubbles. Those things more than compensates for any lack of automated defenses. Unless you're asleep, nothing get's through a proper gate camp using those. Change isn't bad, but it isn't always good. Sometimes, the oldest and most simple of things can be the most elegant and effective. |
