Don't get me wrong, competing with 40,000 others simultaneously fighting for the same download is quite the giggle but let's stagger it out a bit if we can, eh?
thats a good idea so ccp wont do it lol
Bad idea - everyone would download and patch the client before QA is finished successful and its clear that it wont be rolled back again.
So what you're saying is they're trying to install alpha software on unstable hardware as we type, right?
QA is to assure there will be no rollbacks neccessary at all. If they have no clue, they failed in advance.
And yes, it is possible to install different versions side by side, even automatically without user interaction required. It's just a matter of programmers being fit enough to do so and storage space.

lacks information about client upgrade procedures, space requirements for the update, etc.
Simply put: Downtime with yet another fail in terms of taking time to properly inform paying customers.
Tyrannis "being up" does not imply we will be able to log in soon after, does it? How much time shall we expect for our clients to get upgraded? Three weeks from now? Four? Maybe never if we choose to.

Whats the point of patching now anyway?
The point is having appropriate upgrade information in place, as that's within the duty of a professional company to protect its paying users from malware, otherwise possibly being given to those as "the really shiny upgrade stuff" from malicious third parties.
Imagine somebody forging an "update" executable now, displaying EVE login screen, asking for your username/password just to send it to some remote server of your friendly EVE enemy....

Sounds like a real stress test.

Originally by: AoshiKenshin Let's see. $15 a month. 30 days in a month. That's $0.50 a day. Would you like your 50 cents mailed to you or deposited into your bank account?
Do the proper math. 20000 subscribers paying $0.50 'per day' would be 10.000 dollar in total. "For downtime".
I have no doubt the technical team is doing good work. It's management which fails as it'd be their responsibility to ensure "correctness of" or at least proper time estimates. It's their call to prioritize bugfixing and betatesting over adding new features, too.
I've seen IT company management setting deploy dates without even internally checking beforehand if they have enough system admin manpower at hand to do the planned work at set date. They went bankrupt. Remember Atari? No? It was long known for not delivering in time, too... history tends to repeat itself.
I once suggested to have CCP donate $ 1000 for every "unexpected" hour of extra downtime... management easily gets fooled if user numbers are still rising and there's no prompt extra costs associated with less than 100% functionality...

Originally by: carebear one If a company like CCP would have to compete in the free economy with other software developers ...
They are. Maybe some are a bit too focused on implementing virtual markets to notice, though?!?
P.S.: To all those "in the old days we had to wait days for this and that and liked it.": You are part of the problem.
There's a difference between some users back then and tens of thousands of customers these days. Failing to recognize so will cost CCP real life money.
