ok this is a bad idea.
Why you may ask, becouse if it can be build, then it will be build and build by mass numbers.
Remember when ccp intorduced titans and expected maybe 16 of them to actyally be ingame. Didint take long for alliances to have 10X so many.
Personally i believe it would make 0.0 warfare stagnated. how you destroy thing that is able to whipe out entire fleets? Thats why ccp nerfer titans doomsday. Too many i win buttons in space.

The build requirements and time it would take to build it would be so intense it might be better to just make titans instead, depending on how you are going to use it, not to mention the skill requirements (can you say titan 5?).
It wouldn't be able to wipe out an entire fleet, the super weapon weapon will have a cool down time longer than a doomsday and the other weapons won't have any bonuses.

Here is one way the death star could be used.
A planet is hidden in deadspace, not scannable by ANY of the probes available to exploration.
However a death star is the ONLY ship available which can scan for hidden POS.
However death star MUST be in system with the hidden POS.
In other words you can use spy ships to find the rebel base but only way to scan it down is through the death stars scanners which can lock on to the hidden POS.
Ships like buzzard could scan down a hidden POS signature but only the death star could actually lock onto the hidden POS.

1. Small fast flying ship, frigates or cruisers class. 2. Saboteurs from DUST 514 fighting inside the base disabling it's systems so the small fleet can go through the shields/defensive barriers.
It would make the skill HACKING a hell of a lot more useful to train then what it does now.
It would be a team effort both in space and inside the base.
oh but how would the pilots even get into the base if the shields are up, you ask?
Simple just like in the movie, you actually have to hijack a corp ship (hijacking is currently not a game mechanic unless you eject )
hijacked ship could land and deploy a small team, team 1st priority would be to disable sensors so caps can warp in and disable shields... yeah I'm thinking that only caps would break through shields, BUT as soon as it goes into armor caps are ineffective...
launch FIGHTERS! fighters have to actually fly inside the structure and attack a weak spot... every death star has a weak spot but the coordinated effort of infantry, sabotage, caps, titans and frigates can bring down a death star.
Also a complete nube, we'll call him Nube Skywalker can jump in a t1 ship fly into the heart of the thing and blow it up. Only small ships allowed both t2 and t1.
I like where you're going with that to be honest, aand even combining that with incarna is better still,as it can allow aliance members to board the ship and even kill the pod pilot controling the ship, but this should only apply to death stars of course.

an alliance could only own ONE death star, only ONE can be built by alliance. This would prevent multiple DEATH stars being constructed by one alliance.
also the difference between a titan and a death star ship is that a death star cannot be harmed by external fire. you can only destroy it using frigates. But in order for frigates to gain access you need a real fleet working with you to penetrate the defensive mechanism.
The idea would be that the ship is impervious to damage unless a coordinated attack is performed.
although I also like the idea of a bomber only scenario where you need bombs fitted to cause a chain reaction which will blow up the death star.

Originally by: cyndrogen Alright, we have these huge fleet battles which are very reminiscent of Star Wars, but what about a giant man made planet?
I would love to see a group of alliances actually build and construct one! How cool would it be to create a planet sized ship, something worthy of the name Death Star.
The effort it would take to construct a death star would be staggering for one corp or for even one alliance, but imagine a team of alliances working together to construct the ultimate technological terror. It would require a massive amount of ISK and resources but once complete it would be an 8th wonder of the world!
Think BIG CCP!
1. Bad idea, cool thought.
2. There would be hundreds of them within 3 years regardless of how horrendous the build requirements.
3. The threads covering every aspect of anything that is associated with this "thing" would be to many to bare tbh.
4. Continuation of point 3 would be endless threads of why it's such a carebearish vessel and why it can't take out an entire fleet 50 jumps away. That and why it's ore reprocessing is too underpowered and stations still do ore processing better fir such an expensive ship. All this ending with rants as to why we should even have then.
5. So there...I just saved us all alot of hell.

Plus you would need Dust Soldiers to launch attacks inside the death stair to disable defences perhaps.

It would take over 6 months of actual assembly time to build each one and 100 000 capital ship parts per death star,so it's impossible to have hundreds in 3 years....Only the older and more established aliances, not renter or smaller pet aliances would even have the resources to even think about building one,so that leaves maybe 5~6 aliances out of the hundreds in game to even consider it.
So even if working non stop,in 3 years time, you'd maybe 20 of them between those 5~6 major aliances....

That's what they said about Titans...
A Death Star should only be viable for introduction when a single entity (Empire Faction or 0.0 Spaceholding Alliance) effectively controls the entire cluster and holds sov in at least 99% of it.
It needs a superweapon capable of destroying a planet or a HIC in a single shot (Admiral Akbar: "... Our cruisers can't repel firepower of that magnitude.")
It needs at least 6 highslots... ("Say about 20 guns, some on the tower, some on the surface"). (5 Quad Light Beams would provide the 20 guns and an additional highslot would be required for the superweapon.
It would have to have horrendous EHP to survive being rammed by, what is effectively, a Titan (The Executor) with negligable effect on its combat effectiveness. Though its tank should be fairly minimal. It does, however, need a dronebay, bandwidth and drone based bonus sufficient to launch several waves of several thousand fighters each.
Its most devastating weakpoint is a small thermal exhaust port, just below the main port. It might be possible for new Advanced Fighters to attack this weak spot in small numbers but the chances of actually causing catastrophic damage to the Death Star should be in the region of 1,000,000:1. --

I have seen titans being built and poped like candy...
If you don't make a tougher ship, a worthy target, people will just get bored. A Death Star is the ultimate POS of terror and it should be considered as part of the game, and NO I don't think you could build 20 if only SIX alliances have the resources to actually construct ONE. An alliance would have resources to build only ONE, it would be a marvel in eve and unlike a titan would require planning and a coordinated effort to bring this bad ass station down.

One more thing, using a death star to destroy a planet should also come with severe penalties. The ultimate weapon also causes the ultimate penalty, like the entire alliance sec status would be lowered if a planet was destroyed, this way you would prevent unnecessary destruction and make it so it's only used as a very last resort but with deadly consequences. It would be a tactical weapon used to weaken a rival alliance but also paying the price and being able to afford the sec loss.

I think CCP should work a little more on titans first since they are essentially supposed to be the death stars of eve. Evolution not revolution.
Terrible idea anyhow, this is not star wars.

Edited by: Zeredek on 24/05/2010 18:45:13 You need to has 30 captured systems to build it maybe? If the number drops below 30 the death star is like... disabled or something...
Just an idea

I'd say something like....
1. Must have and keep sov in 20 systems.
AND
2. Must have atleast 2000 Corp or alliance members OR pay 10 billion isk a day to maintain ship.
AND
3. Build time is minimum 6 months and cost is equivalent to 1 trillion isk with logistics making Titan production look like a frigate.
Do all that and I'd say it would be pretty cool.

It's plausible. It should take an astronomical amount of resources to build and maybe instead of solely an isk cost for upkeep but also have to keep a certain amount of personnel or "crew" to manage the ship. I know that crew has been suggested before and never implemented but maybe with incarna this feature could finally get added in. Also, a possible different aspect with them is that instead of it being controlled by sole pod pilot, maybe having multiple pilots different parts of the death star in order for it to function? I feel as if this makes sense because it is a ship, but then a space station as well and requires pod pilots to manage it since one pilot cannot simply fly a whole death star.
They would also have the ability to be taken over or destroyed by dust teams. Yes it would suck to have your death star blown up by some 14 year olds screaming "OWNED OWNED OWNED OWNED" but that would be one of the risks about them. The dust team wouldn't be able to get onto the ship first without having been taken aboard the death star by a transport ship or something from someone in the game, which means you could shoot at the transport ship in space thus meaning you aren't completely unable to protect it in space. To conquer it you'd have to get frigate class ships and disable certain defenses, perhaps having multiple points on the ship that need to be destroyed for the shield to go down. Then try and sneak in the transport ship with the dust team. If they get in then it is up to your dust team. If no members of the dust team were to be present then you could have the ships security personnel fight the dust team, but of course the security forces would not be so great. Think of them as good as NPC's in missions. Get enough of them and they could overwhelm the dust team who is attacking. If not then the defensive side has the choice to initiate the self-destruction of the death star or leave it be and try and take it over another time. After it is taken over by the dust team they can either destroy it or give it back to the alliance who was attacking or who was attacked. The crew of the death star automatically starts leaving it once it starts it self-destruct phase. If the death star is captured by the dust team, the people who hired them may either pay a fee (bribe) to the crew to stay on the ship and work for them or they leave the ship. It takes isk to get crew onto the ship in the first place, but it'd be much more isk to bribe the current crew but you wouldn't have to deal with finding more crew once you take it.
-They can act as mobile bases for fleets, letting all ships have the ability to fit in space but not when there are enemies close to it. -Destroy the entire infrastructure on a planet and wipe out nearly all the population on it. -Bridge fleets across systems like titans but requiring a good deal of fuel in the process. -They cannot get close to certain objects like stargates, POS's and stations due to their enormous size throwing off the position of that object. -After using the uber-super-doomsday weapon the ship must recharge for 3 hours before it can jump out of the system (Duh).
Bad reasons for them: -They could get abused like titans where an alliance has 10X the amount that CCP originally thought there would be. This would be very bad and is a major concern. The construction of them would need to be balanced with the amount of resources that it takes to build them, how long it takes to build them and the upkeep that it takes to keep them running from day to day. -Lag. Lag is a serious concern in 0.0 fleet fights and until this is resolved and lag is reduced to pre-dominion then there is no need for something like this that would probably generate a great deal of lag.
Yes it's a wall of text and these are just ideas/opinions. It'd be interesting to see something this massive, but old stuff needs to be taken care of first instead of adding crazy new content.
