Just a thought which is influenced/nicked by the cry baby device used in Firefly.
http://www.fireflywiki.org/Firefly/CryBaby
The basic principle would be that whatever form this would take it would be a device, or thingy, which could be used to fool probes.
As an example if a group were out in low sec mining away they could deploy a can somewhere in the system which would pretend to be them if somebody tries to probe them out.
It would be necessary that such a device would be destroyable, so after a pirate is tricked they can blow the can up and will then be able to locate the group who were previously masked. As an aside to this it could be a good idea for the can to send the group a warning message to tell you that it's dead.
Other possible functions could be that this device could pretend to be things other than just ships, such as grav sites, so they could also be used to set up traps. Which I would think could be useful for pirates/anti-pirates.
So far I've just given an example of a deployable object but as from the title I have a feeling that this could also be turned into a new module or ship, who knows.
Just an idea which I think has merit, but I'm not precious so feel free to tear it to shreds .

It's not a bad idea, I guess it could work. But it would have to be pretty expensive. If it was too cheap, everyone would drop hundreds of those when in low sec, and be almost impossible to catch.
It would be good as a one-off "I'll take my chance with this to try to save my ship" thing. So it should be something you really have to invest on, and not just throw out like a bad rash.

Either that or limit it in another way through skills, using maybe anchoring as the base. By having level 5 allowing 5 cans to be dropped in total (In my mind this would almost be beyond the upper limit of how many of these I'd like to see deployed at a time).
Or maybe go through another route where higher levels in Anchoring allows for the use of better quality 'cans' which have more/better tricks on offer. This would then limit it to 1 of these being in play at a time.
Also as another inbuilt balancing tool I would say that maybe only the gang booster (or a similar 1 person per group title) should be allowed to deploy these.

I'd make the max drop limit two or three and make them fairly large, maybe 500m3.
Also on't have it's destruction alert the owner because that would give too much early warning.

Edited by: Mag''s on 22/05/2010 16:00:05 I actually quite like this idea.
But I think it should be limited to 1 per fleet and no warning message. But lets face it, anyone with a brain would have a cloaked alt watching the thing.
It's main skill set should be Anchoring level 5. It's own skill, which gives a deception chance per level of 20%, should be a rank 8 or higher skill.
Edit: Oh and the size, they should be 'big' 2000m3 and larger 'big'. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________

Thanks for the replies guys, all sensible stuff so far.
Another balancing tool that could help would be that these would expire after a certain period, like a normal can does, mainly because I hate the idea of someone being able to dump one and expect it to cover their arse/act as bait for a whole day.
Oh and to re-stress that if this were to exist I would love for this to be useful to everybody, it's intent isn't purely for people to have an escape clause when being probed out. It is so people looking for some pew pew could have another way to try to draw the fight away from gates, and to an environment that can be better controlled.
Again just thoughts, feel free to kick down my castle there is plenty of sand to go round .
