So I'm needing to invest in a new laptop as my old one died... And have no clue about video cards lol. I'm not terribly concerned about it, I'm sure whatever I get will probably work, but I do want to be sure, as a new computer is a bit of a hefty investment for me.
Of course I'm not completely clueless and helpless when it comes to computers... But I'm also not above having the occassional brainfart moment where I'll be stuck in microsoft word yelling "MAKE the little BULLET POINT, COME ON!!" ... so I guess what I'm asking is if there's maybe a guide or chart or some other resource out there that'd give me a good idea of what I want?
Thanks in advance, and don't mind the rambling haha But I digress. This one time at fat camp, i was flying a dominix, and then I was so hungry that i ate 3 planets and collapsed into a black hole, which ate my sig. |

Not ANY laptop card will work with EVE. In fact most won't, and the majority of the ones that will will run with lag if you do anything more than fly in a straight line with no modules active. The best laptop graphics card is equal to a medium range desktop graphics card that's about 2 years old.
I guess what I'm saying is... buy a desktop. You'll need to spend thousands of pounds or dollars on a laptop that will run EVE with medium graphics, but nowhere near as much as a desktop that'll run everything in full.

Every notebook graphics chip currently on the market, ranked in order of gaming performance.
edit for the poster immediately above me: my laptop cost ú800 or so a few months ago, and comfortably runs 2 instances of eve at 1920*1080 on high quality.

Pick up anything with ATI or nVidia dedicated graphic card. Integrated is a big no no.

I'm assuming new laptops doesn't come with anything less than that nowadays, am I wrong?

thanks for all the info so far everyone, I do appreciate it. Hmm. Considering my laptop that just died is (was) about 4 years old in it's design, and ran eve just fine (at least on medium to low graphics) that most laptops today would work ok. granted it was pretty high quality, but still. And that laptop being a gift, I dunno lol.
Now to look into it moar and pretend I have a clue what I'm doing haha
EDIT: I should also mention that eve is really one of the only games that I plan on playing on it, as after eve, most other games just seem shallow and therefore boring... And any game that ISN'T as such, will just create more of a time sink than I want or need But I digress. This one time at fat camp, i was flying a dominix, and then I was so hungry that i ate 3 planets and collapsed into a black hole, which ate my sig. |

You should be fine as long as you follow that rule.
The funny thing about this sentence is that by the time you've finished reading it, it's too late for you to realise it doesn't say anything. |

I have a Asus G60VX-RBBX05 and it runs eve wonderfully, as well as Modern Warfare II, Crysis at max (around 16-25 fps), Fallout, Street Fighter, Resident Evil, Assasins Creed I / II.
And the thing only costs like $1000.
I'm very happy with it, and if you're like me and insist on having a laptop this ones definitely the best bang for the buck.
Sig Gallery is currently down: Contact me ingame for prices.

most excellent! That Asus G60VX-RBBX05 looks good. Think I'll get that one, unless somethingf better comes up, thanks! Looking round the internets as well it seems a solid laptop.
As opposed to a liquid laptop hahaha But I digress. This one time at fat camp, i was flying a dominix, and then I was so hungry that i ate 3 planets and collapsed into a black hole, which ate my sig. |

Edited by: Illwill Bill on 28/05/2010 14:46:19 All modern notebook video chipsets are capable of running eve at 1280x768 and with lowest settings and framerates of at least 30 FPS. This includes Intel chips.
That being said, if you are really going to use the computer as a gaming system, then look at a system with a dedicated video chip. A large fleet engagement would bring an Intel ship down on it's knees. Additionally, it really infuriates me, when people use some pointless rant about signatures as a sig. |
