So, I'm trying to do Silence the Informant, level 4.
And I can't get through the first room, because I can't seem to find a tank setup that holds for more than minutes. (Note: Dominix.)
According to EVE-survival mission reports, the drone battleships do heavy kin/therm. So I tanked for that with 2x Thermic hardeners, 2x Kinetic hardeners, DC2, and LAR2x2.
No dice.
So, drones USUALLY do explosive damage. Tried that.
No, I'm dying.
Their weapons *look* like lasers. Tried EM/thermal. Nope.
Tried a sort of omni-tank - strongest on thermal, good EM, solid kinetic, some explosive.
Nope.
How does this mission *work*? Normally my tank holds up to just about anything but I can't *find* the tank for this one.

Snipe the Drone BS before they can get into range of you. That plus managing aggro should make it easy, if annoying because of the lack of loot and bounties. Try using Curator IIs and 2x DLAs.
If your strategy is to sit still with 2x reps running and use Ogres, though, lol.

I'm not sure how I'm supposed to manage aggro - the entire room aggros without my firing on any of them.
I don't know what a DLA is, and I can't use Curator IIs.

Switch your drones to passive.
The room doesn't agro, all you have agro on entry is the missile turrets, and if you shoot those, the room agros.
A 1x LAR setup plenty for this pocket, just dont agro the pocket. Notice 2 drones in a group, shoot 1 drone, get 2 drones to agro and kill them. Repeat with the group of 3 drones, finish with the rest. The 3x drones only do more than 1x LAR when get <30 km and by the time you shoot them and they close, even just sentry drones with no 350mm support (ishtar with civ pop gun) I find that about 2 drones are down before they get that close.

Tanking the first room is only real a problem if you aggro wrong.
Stay passive until the 3 elite parasite BS have spawned on the left about 65km out. Eliminate those first.
Do not engage the sentries or anything else until they are eliminated.
Take out the sentry guns. Take out the 2 BS. Take out the rest.
come back and complain about room 2 being untankable.

Tank you want = 2 * eanm + Therm hardner(active) + whatever repairers vs mercs/drones in that mission (same on stop the thief/damsel etc)

Ahh the days of Gallente ships and running missions, how I've missed them.
I spent MONTHS trying to unfuk a megathron, Domi, Hyperion, Navy Mega, even a Vindi... Eventually realising that I was just doing it wrong.
One of the biggest problems you've got, is your damage and tanking mods are all Low Slots.
There's no armour mod equivilent to a shield boost amplifier.
There's no armour mod equivilent to an invulnerability field for blanket protection. Best mod is a passive (no Cap) -30.3 stupidily expensive officer mod, VS a dirt cheap T2 Invul field at -30% or a 380M CN Navy field at -37%
There's no armour repair mod that comes even close to a Gist X Type in any size. In terms of cap per repaired amount.
Compare a 500M Shield Repair Mod to a 500m Armour Repair mod, the armour mod is garbage.
No matter how I worked it or how much ISK I was prepared to throw at it, armour tanking was always subpar for missioning. That's before you even factor in the time lost having to swap out hardeners, which means having to read the mission statement.
Now days I barely even read where the mission is. The only time I ever change out hardeners is for Slave Traders 2/2 where the volley damage for the first 2 hits makes my butt pucker, I can probably tank it but I'm not that interested in finding out how close it will be, so I swap out a painter for an EM hardener, kill the slavers and leave.
Cliff Notes: It's never too late to train Tengu, T2 Heavy Missiles, Shield Tanking. |

Those aren't rogue drones, they're Elite Drone Parasites aka "generic drones", they do therm/kin damage and have that standard(ish) resists where shield is different than armor.
The other drones in the mission are normal but there's only a few of them, they're cruiser/destroyer versions and they should not need to be tanked specifically. |

No, my Drone Link Augmentor is a high slot mod. ;)
I run my Domi as a droneboat. (Apart from anything else, I have severe ADHD; I like a ship that doesn't fall apart because I got distracted.)

Too late, no - too soon, yes. I have several months yet before I'm even close to satisfied with my science/industry skills.
Mission-running is fun, but really it's a way to pass the time, make isk, and lightly gather minerals and modules while my skills train and my production jobs trundle along.

There's no reliable way to quantify NPC damage types done unless it's NPC missiles. Problem with guns is that they do dual damage types and the hit quality is always a variable. The best you can do is get a ballpark feel after several tedious tests. It's really pointless for L4 missions because of the below.
You can lookup NPC stats from several sites. One of the better ones e.g. http://games.chruker.dk/eve_online/item.php?type_id=21814 These EVE DB stat dumps have been accurate thus far. As can see, the theoretical dps for each drone BS is 192 dps (KI+TH) - and with all 5x of them aggroed, you're in for some interesting times. Note thier varied shield and armor resistances, which is fairly different from vanilla drones.
Aggroing the whole first pocket isn't such a big problem for missile ships like the CNR though. Typical step involves dropping all 5x drone BS shield with an EM salvo each, then swapping to EX to finish them. Their shields don't regenerate fast enough to undermine the EX switch. Gunships typically take too long to kill them, but doable if you know what to do.

My paladin tanks just fine, and the only thing I bought was a Imp navy LAR (Because its the only rep that will fit with tachyons)

You know the saying, "Don't fly what you can't afford to lose."?
I can't afford to lose a Navy Domi. Those things are expensive... whereas I have Production Efficiency V and can make my own standard-issue Domi hulls for a relative pittance.

Try dropping a round of ammo and then circling the crate with an afterburner on at around 5-10km.
Also therm/kin hardeners , aenm . And yeah shield tanking is a lot easier than armor.

Armor compensation skills, train them, that is all (and no, shield compensation skills don't improve invulns)

That mission can be somewhat hard while you're still low skilled.
Kill off the small fry but don't shoot those sentries till your ready to aggro the BS's. Then burn for those BS's at maximum speed. Kill just one of them, and you can usually tank them from then on.
You just need to have sufficient tank to last while you get close enough to kill one of the three so the incoming dps is reduced.
You're only alternative is to snipe them from a long way away. They don't actually hit you if you snipe them.

And then there's the second room. Start off by only shooting the stuff that's shooting you. The Caracals will be firing lasers at you (yes, mercs do lolfit too), so if you're hardened against kin/therm for the rest of the mercs, shoot the caracals first. Keep shooting only stuff that's shooting you. It is safe to use drones.
After you sort out your entry aggro, the rest of that room is fairly tame.
