Yo,
I myself am not color blind. Or not that I know of anyways. However a few days ago I was talking to a person in a chat who mentioned that he cannot see the colors of planets correctly, when scanning for materials in Planet Mode.
As this could be potentially an accessability issue, I was wondering if there are any tricks, tweaks or other work-arounds (in before 'change the settings on the monitor').

Yes, you can adjust the slider to change the scale.
Highest density is always white. Assuming that people can distinguish white correctly from everything else it will work for them too.

When you adjust the slider, the red becomes white.

The scanner bar can be shrunk and moved so you can get a better view of high concentration areas as bright white regions _____________________ Horrors! Demons in the deep! |

Then maybe you watched the wrong videos.
Hey once I saw this one vid where this girl takes this huge cucumber and I thought "WOW, so that's how to do it..." Oh, I digress!
Well look at this: http://www.eve-ivy.com/wiki/images/b/b3/Planetology_L0vsL3_ZoomIn.jpg
Take a good look at the slider for the scan. See the last part of the scale is NOT red? See how the inner most area of the surface is NOT red? See how the extractors are NOT placed on the red area? |

The white color for highest concentration is new. It used to be red, and I can't recall when that was changed since I stopped playing with PI a few weeks before the release.
The slider usage is ambigous and open to a variety of interpretation. Very typical of CCP to come out with such things, and I was going to complement them on a good and clear skills write-up description for all 5 PI skills. So, no cookie for them because the feedback was largely ignored in the Test forum.
The slider is basically what you would term as a fine tuner. When you do a default scan for a planet, all the values let's say an arbitrary 1-10 appears on the map. If the concetrations are low to very low, it's very difficult to distinguish them. To solve this issue, you move the right-hand slider to bracket only the range let's say 1-5.
So, what this does is that it magnifies the scale so that those areas with max concentration 5 will show as white. From here, you can obviously deduce that for low concentrations, you just need to play with moving the right-hand slider with the white color as a sort of arrow pointer to the min concetrations that will show on the map.
You can also do a pin-point scan of let's say only concentration 6 shows on the map as white by squeezing BOTH the left and right sliders to 6. |

It's been there for long enough time, I think it was introduced along with the tune bar because it was nearly impossible to see the colors on certain planets for people with or without color blind issues.

I'm color blind but luckily with PI you can adjust sliders and white is not that hard to distinguish from the red.
However I wish they would change some other things. Like the green glow around modules when they are active. I can never tell if a module is on or off - so I have to spin the camera around for a few moments just to be sure.
And drone bars are horrible too, I lose drones all the time. It's so hard to see if they are damaged or not. ---
