I spent a few hours reading other threads and trying various combinations before I got Tyrannis working smoothly. So here is the checklist that works well for me.
- Choose a version of wine. 1.1.44 works fine for me (other people claim to have graphical glitches).
- Install wine. Each distro has a different method.
- Gentoo:
- echo "app-emulation/wine ~x86" >> /etc/portage/package.keywords
- emerge -avu app-emulation/wine
- As yourself, run winecfg. This creates /home/yourname/.wine and all the goodies to get started, and pops up a config panel
- Click the Audio tab in the config panel. This will pop up a warning that it installed an audio driver and needs you to press Apply. Probably ALSA. If you have ALSA, I recommend checking that. Haven't tried with other sound systems. Apply, and close.
- wget http://www.kegel.com/wine/winetricks
- sh winetricks. Select corefonts, and let it do that.
- more winetricks, each in turn, selecting the following. Not sure what is absolutely required but these work for me.
- ddr=opengl
- glsl-disable
- orm=backbuffer
- winxp
- gecko
Do NOT install directx d3dx9 stuff.
- As I didn't redownload the whole thing when Tyrannis came out, I install Dominion first. wine EVE_Premium_Setup_127381.exe.
- If you installed Dominion (because you have a patch and didn't want to download yet again), then RUN eve first once before applying the patch.
- Patch: wine evepremiumpatch127381-154366.exe
- mv .wine/drive_c/Program\ Files/CCP/EVE/res/audio/Jukebox .wine/drive_c/Program\ Files/CCP/EVE/res/audio/Jukebox.HIDE
- Disable compositing on your X server. In KDE, Computer > System Settings > Desktop > uncheck Enable desktop effects. Perhaps disabling the Composite option in /etc/X11/xorg.conf would work too, I did not try.
- Play: wine .wine/drive_c/Program\ Files/CCP/EVE/eve.exe

Thumbs up!
This is the exact process I use myself to install in Ubuntu 10.04. Might be worth mentioning graphics drivers should be as up to date as is stable on their system.

This was exactly what I needed to get eve to work on Ubuntu 10.04!
The only gripe is that I can't run eve in windowed mode. When doing that the mouse click seems to be unsyncronized with the pointer graphics; i.e. the click seems to occur a cm or two below or to the side of the pointer.

This worked fine for me, and I even have Compositing still enabled (and fancy desktop effects and all that.)

It will fix itself if you set the window to a different size and then back.
Do you get that glitch where a white field appears around the cursor at times?

Worked perfect using Wine 1.1.42 from the Ubuntu Repositories.

Great instructions, thumbs up :)
Oh, and yes, one more thing - for me it worked by switching the ATi for nVidia

copy/paste your eve directory, rename it to something like EVE2
copy/paste your shortcut and edit the path according to your changes
eg: wine explorer /desktop=EVE1,1920x1200 .wine/drive_c/Program\ Files/CCP/EVE/eve.exe wine explorer /desktop=EVE2,1920x1200 .wine/drive_c/Program\ Files/CCP/EVE2/eve.exe

Ubuntu (at least 9.10; only needed for latest wine):
- sudo apt-get purge wine wine1.2
- sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntu-wine/ppa
- sudo apt-get update
- sudo apt-get install wine1.2[/*]
Works like a charm, no random crashes, etc. The only thing not working is the well-known Jukebox crash, "resolved by" renaming the Jukebox music folder on the Eve installation. -- Space. It seems to go on and on forever. But then you get to the end and a gorilla starts throwing barrels at you. (Fry in Futurama "Space Pilot 3000") |

Yes, I do. Running Ubuntu 10.04.
I came back from a break and noticed the Linux support is no more so I checked the forums and started experimenting. I did like the post from 2009 suggests and compiled the newest Wine. I tried rest of the tips from there and didn't get it to work, then I checked this post and it works, now and then. Sometimes when I try to get inside the game crashes my whole computer, usually after the (this is from wine command line) "service: wallet" part of the load.
Is it always this bad after a new patch?

Lay off the fud. Noone cares, and you're spouting rubbish anyway. Legions of happy users strongly suggest that your system is defective elsewhere.
More relevant to this thread, can anyone suggest why a second instance of EVE won't start? The first one runs absolutely fine. I have duplicated the EVE directory to EVE-2. It gets as far as the splash screen, then bails:
