The forum community, at least the one that frequents General Discussion is horrible. Always the same twentysomething faces whining and whining and whining and cursing over something and how CCP has ruined the game. It's no different in any other game developers forums btw.
On the other hand the game itself does have tens of thousands of happy people playing it day in day out.

I find EVE's community to be a lot better than most MMOs. Yes, there is the standard complaining and whining that happens but, as a whole, I think this community is more mature and more intelligent. Perhaps that's just a bit of wishful thinking but it -seems- that way to me. :)
To the OP: Welcome to EVE! You're going to have a lot of fun.

Cant compare to other MMOs since i dont play them, but i dont think i have seen a single game yet where the community didnt think they were better (both as in nicer as in (lol) more intelligent, mature, etc) than other games.
From my experience the age of empires community was a bit better than other ones, but besides that is is all pretty much the same.

Wat? Most of the youngish corps I fleet up with would kill to have a player with 38mil sp. With that amount you should be well into maxing your fitting skills and have access to all the t2 mods and useful ships that go with whatever races you can fly.
Not really. I have seen 150 Million SP characters who couldn't fight worth crap. All their skiils are in business and manufacturing...

I'm afraid you'll be disappointed with some things eventually, after diving in for a while. To put it shortly, eve is a brilliant concept with less than stellar execution. CCP can get away with this because there is nothing comparable players could flock to (Dust won't have that luxury btw). As for the community, I agree that the game does attract a different sort of player type than your average gaming community, which I value.

Welcome to EVE Nefalex.
Here are a few tips for you:
- Read all pop-up messages that appear and take warnings seriously unless you know what you're doing - Never trust anything that seems to good to be true (such as contracts etc.) - Never trust anyone with items or information that you can't replace or that you don't want misused (nobody will feel sorry for you and the GMs won't help you - all you'll get is laughter and flames) - By undocking you're entering a non-consensual PVP zone (even in high sec), behave accordingly - Never fly a ship you can't afford to lose (this also goes for its cargo) - Join a player corp ASAP - Don't be scared of 0.0, that's where the real action is to be had (highsec is boring and you'll lose interest quickly if you don't leave) - Don't attempt to solo-PVP unless you have the money to replace your ship and don't feel bad if you get ganked over and over. Solo-PVP is very difficult and EVE isn't really designed to be a solo game. (rule #1 of PVP is "bring friends") - Always update your clone - If you quit EVE then don't give away your account or sell your character. You will come back (trust me).
And now have fun in New Eden.

Wow thanks for all the responses! I even got a few EVE Mails giving me a welcome. I saw a couple people commented about how i was a bit unspecific in my praises, and i think i shouldnt play favorites considering every time i get on almost i figure out theres something else i can stick my nose into (Im loving exploration if you cant tell) but i CAN name a few =D
The skill system is what i check first in EVERY MMO ive ever tried. How do you level or advance your character. The only games ever successful (to my memory, and in usa) to implement the skill level system were Ultima online, and a horrible cash shop scheme game Mabinogi. EVE rocks a better skill training system than ive ever seen both allowing you to be any and everything you want, granted you take the time to train the skill. But having so many skills that time itself forces you to specialize (22 years people. Thats what i was told how long it takes to train every skill in the game to level 5)
Combat...Interstellar combat where the players (ships) involved can travel anywheres from 200 m/sec up to warp speed. cmon it hasnt even been attempted before (as far as im aware of)
If you flip on your galaxy map (which will undoubtedly impress EVERY new player that sees it for the first time reguardless of their opinion of the game) and switch it to show security status instead of star color you really get a feel for the structure and soverignty of the galaxy, and the sheer SIZE of New Eden. Just the highly colonized high sec regions closer to the center of the galaxy alone are so numerous im still afraid to travel too many systems from my home station. But its when you look at all the uncharted space, all the low sec spiraling ever outwards arms and legs of the galaxy sprawling lightyears into space. I couldnt help but picturing myself piloting a destroyer at 2:30 AM exploring the outer reaches of the galaxy, FAR away from any other capsuleer , let alone station. I havent seen a soul in hours and uncloaks right in front of me a Battle cruiser. Do i warp out? do i jam his warp drive before i try warping? Lol
So as i dont jam a wall of TXT down anyone who cared enough to take the time to respond to my post ill wrap it up with one more thing. And no i didnt forget combat, and ive experienced EVE combat its godly and i cant say ive seen better. But i wont comment much because i believe that out of ALL parts of EVE, combat is whats most similar to other games. ASIDE from PVP, but i would be a fool to be experienced first hand in that field of play (as of yet! =D)
PROBES people. PROBES is what im getting at. In EVE if i get sick of doing something, i go hop in my electronic warfare frigate, fit it with my core probe launcher and undock. Than its up to me to get myself away from home a bit, launch my probes and start scanning. If you havent played yet, seeing how you move your probes around the solar system on the world map and use them to triangulate cosmic signatures will both scare and amaze you. It amazed me because i saw that id NEVAR be left with nothing to do but go out and grind in EVE. Theres quite a few different types of cosmic sigs you can hunt down and they go from easy to nightmarishly difficult, and the loot you dig up there ranges from a warp scrambler you loot off a pirate, to a blueprint you hacked a communications tower belonging to a pirate coorperation, to an ancient ruin to sift through and find the sweet juicy innards

Welcome to Eve - best game out there by far imho. You are a citizen in a virtual world (universe?) not just a participant in a very large multi-player version of a video game.

HEY!
Mabinogi is awesome and the only other MMO I currently play long term -.- Frankly I think it's as much a love-it-or-hate-it job as EVE is..

Edited by: Nefalex on 03/06/2010 16:12:35 perhaps i should clerify, the comment wasnt really about mabinogi but moreso about cash shop games. its 11 real life dollars for a horse, and 10 dollars for a new character, and every time you level you get 2 ap, that is unless every week you spend 10 dollars to rebirth so as you can stay competitive with anyone who seriously plays. Dont get me wrong i played mabi as well, like i sayd only mabi, uo, and eve have even attempted a free skill system and out of the cash shop free to play mmos mabi does happen to be the best :)

Welcome OP!
Remember the Forums are full of rabble, and everyone thinks inside a pretty small box. There's the best way to do things, and good ways to do things, and you are always welcome to innovate. Try what people suggest, and experiment as much as you want and compare. This is how you learn how to truly fit a ship, corner a market, or whatever, vs. simply following the herd.
Eve Online = Patience. If you feel frustrated and bored, just walk away. Come back to it later, it's worth it. And don't ever compare this game to WoW in any matter that suggests WoW is good in anyways what so ever
My best
