If you're having trouble with this morning's patch and you're using Norton 360, temporarily shutting down the firewall got it to work for me.

windows comes with a built in firewall, firefox comes with a built in virus scanner. free.
norton is a total pile of junk. that people actually pay for :/
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lvDzarJOJNQ watch that and decide.

In my experience fixing peoples computers as a side job, norton has been the cause of every single connectivity or slowdown issue. It's one of the few things about computers that I can say I've encountered no exceptions to.

I agree. Norton 10 years ago wasn't so bad or even 5 years ago if you used the corporate edition. Now, it's overbloated and pretty much every piece of spyware built makes every effort to fool Norton and McAfee products.
If you feel you need something other than the basic stuff and a hardware firewall, then I suggest taking a look at some of the more non-mainstream AV systems. Such as ESET NOD32. I am sure people can suggest others.
They are cheaper, faster, lower memory footprint, not as invasive with blocking OS legitimate OS calls and tend to be better at picking up spyware. ~~ Tethraa KaiSuun |

Seriously though get rid of that.

This thread is a refreshing ray of light! In my line of work I encounter so many Norton users - and they won't f**kin listen to me!

Of course! Nortons only runs on windows. The problem is Windows! This is clearly a signature. |

Norton, the worst Antivirus software ever created, it slows any computer down, long startups, its just a piece of cleverly marketed rubbish.
AVG is a good software. theres a free version which is more than adequate.

Isn't Norton == Symantec?
If that is the case, then I sincerely condemn them to the eternal fires of hell. Them or my corporate IT department. I personally dislike something using 80% of my CPU and >170mb of RAM on a single core 2ghz 512mb machine on a weekly basis. Especially if it is my work machine, which I'm trying to do work on... I've been doing filing on Thursday afternoons because of poor IT management and implementation. I hate filing, and I've nearly run out of it.
Our IT department loves RTVscan.exe. I love the lulz of the potential cost of putting >200 people out of work for around two hours a week while their PCs are locked down scanning for viruses that still aren't there. A very rough calculation is that this virus scan costs over ú2,800 a week in lost time. That's conservative.

I believe your OR is a typo. You mean AND :) since they won't let their precious norton corp edition go. We also recommend NOD32 to our client since 80% of computer that have viruses have AVG or Norton installed (sorry avg fans), not just 6 viruses but 200+ worms... oh god, the fighting we get into trying to convince people their 'amazing' anti-virus failed them.

what has been said needed to be said.
also, do not use free antivirus. it won't get enough.
my own preference is kaspersky, been using it for 2 years now.

now that depends. combine avast! with spybot and you have a very effective anti-virus/malware setup, and the money you just saved can be used to purchase a decent router and make use of their built-in (miles better than software version of) firewall.
this combo, even with the addition of a non-IE browser, does not save you from PEBCAK-induced malarky however. ---

same, game mode is nice too (deactivates all warnings etc), very low system impact also small, constant updates.

Should also be noted that Norton has a worse detection rate than free AV system, and Symantec has enough money to bribe comparatives...
I uninstalled Norton forever when it deleted Spotify from my PC (Spotify is NO TROJAN), labeled some self-written html-files as viruses and blocked every single game i have in LAN-mode.
On top of all that it installed 2 Firefox plugins I couldn't uninstall, remove or even deactivate and I most certainly don't want a fcking norton toolbar.
Quite interesting though how mediocre products dominate the market. Norton in the AV market and Microsoft in the OS market.

while i have to agree on the Norton issues over the last years, i also have to state that the 2010 version is completely overhauled and actually very smooth. I decided to give it a shot 2 months ago and was suprised when i saw the improvements. Norton 2008 in comparison was a horribly buggy, resource eating behemont. NIS2010 gave me no issues so far and is very low on resources. They even included a performance/memory monitor and a ton of other improvements and new features..guess they took the critizism over the last years serious.
So if you want to stick to Norton get Norton Internet Security 2010, but keep the hell away from older versions.
