The other option I would see would be the forfeiture to the podding pilot some amount of assets...say, 1 billion ISK?
Perhaps the Sansha were not able to capture your mind, directly, but from the corpse they salvaged enough data to loot your accounts? - - -

A billion ISK means more to some than to others. Perhaps a percentage? Though there's the verification problem with that, too....

Originally by: Aria Jenneth The suicide system is harsh, admittedly, but the problem is that, without it, a suicide device comes down to just another podding with better flavor-text
I really don't think that's a problem. better flavour-text is what RP is all about, after all. Some people may be prepared to make serious in-game concessions like that for the sake of metagame "realism", but the majority of us would rather not, it seems.
My better idea is... just drop the "on your honour you must suicide" thing. You're providing people with an opportunity to get some RP in, which is cool, but if they've decided that what they want is for their character to have fitted a small sub-tactical nuke (or some equivalent) to their clone for specifically that contingency, then give them the chance to play that choice out without actually penalising them. They can play a little amnesia and some confusion as a side effect of the "cold" clone to their heart's content, but there's no good reason for people to actually lose skillpoints for the sake of RP rigorousness. - Verin "Stitcher" Hakatain. |

Hm. Actually, the point was more to discourage abuse of the "Sure, I'll take advantage of the system but you're not getting your hands on my #^%*ing character!" sort.
Getting caught invariably means being put in a position where ordinarily the character would have been podded. If there's no sacrifice whatever, aside from RP niftiness, there's a risk of the system being gamed-- used strategically against those of us who actually take it seriously by those of us who don't.
It takes virtually no effort just to say, "My pod contains only a corpse when you get it open."
If we're going to allow an escape hatch like that, there should be some penalty attached. Otherwise, it seems more like we just shouldn't allow it.
