Just a quick question how do you guys get such high points per run. Are you using high end multipul gpu`s and cpu`s.Im only using my old nvida gt8800 oc card.It out performs my core duo e6750 cpu by loads.Ive tried the 2 cpu cores running but just crashes so i either run only the 1 core or just the gpu now.Any tips would be great..cheers

Also, how much bandwidth does this take? I'm in lol-stralia, where we still have monthly download limits.
As far as I know you should go with the GPU2 client for your ATI card and the SMP for your i7, both of which are available here.
As for bandwidth, it looks like I need about 8+1 MiB per day for CPU+GPU when they run at 100% all day. You probably wont do that (neither do I) and hopefully that'll be within your bandwidth budget.

The gpu client does require cpu power though gpu3 less so but have read its not as good points wise for older cards. Running multiple clients cpu/gpu I have to set core affinity so my smp client gets cores 0-2 and the gpu client gets 3 I just set this from task manager if you close the client you'll have to reset it. If I don't set affinity all clients stall out, I use FahMon to see what the clients are up to and tweak settings as needed. The ppd from the cpu client is pitiful compared to the gpu but worthwhile imo... I run a Uniprocessor on an outdated machine that only nets 104ppd but from the explanation on the Folding sites and forums different clients do different things and all contributions are worthwhile.
This is my case running on AMD processors... defiler in the previous post apparently doesn't have an issue but the clients are optimized and run on intel based code so that likely could make a difference. The machine ID is important as defiler noted or the client will not start, outside of weirdness I don't see a reason you couldn't run a uniprocessor and gpu client at the same time.

New Milestone:
A thought on points... when I set out to revitalize the Eve-Online Folding Team it wasn't necessarily about having the best ranked team cranking out the most points it was more about raising awareness and putting to use the idle cpus and gpus of the community for a cause. Its easy to get caught up in the points, member rank, team rank etc but those are just by-products of contributing to the project. My goal is pretty simple I want to capture and retain as many members as possible for the greatest contribution possible; and the frequent updates to the thread regarding our rank is to encourage participation. There's something like 300k subs to Eve knocking out multi accounts that's still alot of people I'd like to reach and recruit. That's the idea behind distributed computing... its not about one computer or a couple its about lots and lots of computers doing something basically in their spare time. I wholly appreciate each and every contribution to our team whether it be a high end gup/smp folding farm moving ppd like they are going out of style or a uni doing his/her thing in the background un-noticed. Add enough of them together you get amazing results. Anyone contributing no matter the ppd or time line is helping the project and is invaluable.
So without further french words I present the new milestone for our team: become 60 active members strong.
There are lots of sub challenges that go on within the community to compete for points but I want to set a different bar and focus our efforts on active recruitment not short term gains. Feel free to discuss amongst yourselves, please do as the more discussion the more bumps our thread gets to stay at the top and attract more attention and more candidates
So my fellow folders your new challenge is not to eek every ppd out of your setup straining it to the limit but to basically recruit one new member to our team. In order to maintain the competitive nature of the milestone and help our bumpage new recruits of our team need to post here and give credit to their recruiter.
Note to ppd eekers... keep it up not discounting your contributions and in fact love to watch our team rank flourish but don't take it on solo, recruit us a new member to push us higher |

Friend? Not to me he bloody isn't! He's a competitor as far as I'm concerned and unless I pick up the pace I'll fall far, far behind.

I have 10 working computers at home. 4 desktops, 4 laptops, and 2 netbooks. The only folding in my house is when the laundry is done...

Sorry been away for awhile and haven't had a chance to post.
Our team has grown in my absence, welcome aboard to all the new members and thanks to the continued dedication of our current members. Like to congratulate Kazuo, to my best knowledge our oldest active member, for breaking 1 million points nice milestone of dedication.
Currently our team is ranked 856th, moved up quite a ways thanks again to everyone and keep up the good work.

Work is keeping me from my primary addiction and looks like its going to keep me that way for sometime. Team has atrophied a little but we are developing a pretty strong core of folders. Appreciation for each and every folder on board with the team. Will check in as time permits but in my absence happy folding.
Thanks again to everyone involved.

Hrmm.. ok the team seems to be in not so much of an atrophy rather possibly hemorrhaging from main arteries.. still have our core folders and many many thanks goes out to each and every one of them... but think we may need to go on a harvest soon and find some fresh blood. Pulled in several for the cause not all decided to stick with the program but that's the norm unfortunately... feel like if we can get a large enough low impact group going we would be better off than pulling in some high ppd ringers for a few days/weeks. Goes back to my whole now edited post of large numbers with low ppd being more beneficial over a few high ppd pikers.. alas the folding team will continue on would just like to see us with a higher number of consistent folders semi-regardless of ppd.
Thanks for all the support thus far and in the future.

I'll be setting up my computer at home (dual Xeon 3.4 Ghz FTW) with 4 clients tonight. Right now its just one client.
I have some work done before. Don't know if it'll transfer over to the team since it was just anonymous and not assigned to a team before.

I run into this quite a bit running the two clients, you can use cpu affinity sets to limit the gpu client to a single core and the smp client to remaining cores though affinity is dynamic and will eventually revert back to all cores for each, restarting the smp as well tends to speed it up when running in conjunction with the gpu after awhile it just seems to get bogged down. I haven't read through the folding forums lately to see if there is a better workaround though I'm pretty sure you can force cpu affinity through shortcut switches or there are programs that will maintain affinity. Haven't really had time to investigate this atm and just use logmein to check on things remotely and adjust/restart as needed.

Sometimes wu's will transfer most of the time they don't not sure how that is determined. You might try out the smp client as it awards bonus points and your setup would likely let you run bigadv wu's (think min is 8 cores but assume you have hyperthreading with the xeons) that are worth even more. You get the bonus iirc for every 10 wu's you turn in. Might poke around the folding forums for the best client setup for your machine.

It's better than having people take part who have no idea of the main disadvantages - i.e. increased power bills, heat, noise, CPU/GPU wear, and some degree of GPU hogging (the GPU client is supposed to yield to other apps, but this process doesn't always work too well). Folding has costs, just like everything else, and if people consider them before plunging in, there's less potential for tears further down the line.

Edited by: Derik Wildstar on 24/10/2010 13:44:11 Hmm prolly going to have to pull one of my 470s off line for awhile and ship that badboy back to EVGA getting pretty unreliable, at first it would just hit thermal limit throttle and quit a unit, but now its being naughty and corrupting the WU's. Will see going to pull it out after work and check if it just needs a good cleaning, might pop an additional fan down next to it to try and keep the pcb cooler improve airflow whatnot.
Welcome aboard Bhurakstar¡killer got your ingame message but with work and civcrack V being out I'm absent alot atm :D
