Hi everyone.
I made a thread a while ago expressing my interest in tri-boxing on three monitors.
I'm still in the process of writing out my build, and I'm at a crossroads with graphics card choice.
Some of the games I want to play run better on AMD graphics, while some on nVidia.
Is EVE optimised more for nVidia or AMD (ATI) graphics cards? I couldn't find any benchmarks.
The indecision is between the GTX 670 and the 7970. |

Well CCP is partnered with Nvidia, but as for actual benchmarks I don't know of any. |

I'd opt for Nvidia, simply because I think there is less hassle with drivers and the hardware than what is coming out from AMD. I'd kill kittens and puppies and bunnies I'd maim toddlers and teens and then more |

I have a 3-monitor setup with two AMD HD Radeon 6870's in a crossfire setup. Runs 3 clients with no problems plus when I feel like it, I can turn on eyefinity (with bezel correction) and have one client in an extra wide screen that spans across all 3 monitors (good for scanning down stuff).
I don't know if nvidia let's you configure the 3 monitors to act as one, it might, duno.
Also, with AMD I can add a 4th monitor if I want, right on top of the center one, for forawhora or prom watching without alt-tabbing any of the 3 clients.
Being able to see all clients at the same time all the time is very good. You can respond quickly to all comm channels on all different characters and give the impression that you are...erm.... *not* a spy. "This is the Ninja. Where do you find anti bezel correction and what does it do? |

I've been using ATI for 7 years and I have never had a problem with Drivers or hardware that I didn't have with NVidia on other computers or prior to 2005.
Not trying to start an argument, I just mean to say that the ATI = Unreliable argument is basically non-existant nowadays; the only problem we ever got is when some software company gets *so* in bed with NVidia ... but to my experience, that's also not happened in years.
I'm using an ATI6870 and my low detail 'alt' installation which I use for changing skills and market work gets an effecting 800fps (this is with VSync off and *everything* set low). With full details and quality on my main installation, I still get > 100fps apart from undocking/jumping.
In summary; if FPS is so important that money doesn't matter, get NVidia; otherwise get named ATI stuff and don't worry about it; you'll save hundreds of pounds and you will not notice the FPS difference. |

Both cards you mention are excellent. Regardless of what you pick, I don't think you'll ever say, "Wow, I wish I'd gone with the other one." Occasionally plays sober |

Actually, the ATI card is $10 more expensive than the nVidia for the same performance roughly. |

I've used both on my mid-range system and didn't notice any real difference performance-wise. I tend to go with AMD, though, mostly because they seem a bit better on the firmware side of things. |

On my monitor (HDMI), the visible area doesn't fit the monitor properly; it's slightly smaller than the actual extent of the monitor. Anti-bezel correction attempts to remedy that, to a certain extent. |

@Sasstraliss
Here is a picture showing what bezel correction does: Linky
And here's a video of how to set it up in AMD: Linky
Bezel correction is a must if you want to use a super-wide virtual monitor to play just one client. If you only want separate clients on each monitor, you don't need it.
I sometimes play one client on 3 monitors so, I need it.
And again, nvidia might have something similar, I've never used nvidia.

Sasstraliss wrote:Is EVE optimised more for nVidia or AMD (ATI) graphics cards? I couldn't find any benchmarks. In terms of speed at identical detail, it's roughly about the same, with some slight lead to NVIDIA. In terms of features, CCP goes with NVIDIA-specific things first, then patch it in (if at all possible) for ATI, so again, slight lead NVIDIA. Given two similarly pricing/performance cards, if EVE is your main focus, I'd ever so slightly lean towards NVIDIA. But not by very much.
Quote:The indecision is between the GTX 670 and the 7970. The 670 should be ever so slightly faster than the 7970 as an aggregate across all benchmarked cards, AFAIK. Again, not by very much (4029 vs 3958 passmark rating), and no idea how overclocked each of the samples benchmarked were, so that might also be a factor. Both cards are pretty solid either way.
You may flip a coin 10 times and in case of a tie pick NVIDIA, or whatever won otherwise http://wiki.eveonline.com/en/wiki/User:Akita_T http://eve-search.com/stats/Akita_T T2 BPO poll : https://forums.eveonline.com/default.aspx?g=posts&t=114789 |

670
because EVE cannot be the only game you play.
nVidia seriously messed up with this card, as it is overpowered versus the pricing for the 680, and the 690 is just 'ouch' versus performance.
majority of people want 60 fps on whatever game they play and the 670 just does it.
sli 670 is veeeery nice.

Nvidia all the way.
ATI's hardware is reasonable, but since they got took over by AMD, their software is garbage. Really bad drivers, lack of any real support or acknowledgement from ATI that their software is crap and lots of headaches.
I actually built this machine with an ATI card, within two months I sold it on ebay and went back to running a GTX280 until my new 3GB GTX580s arrived from PALIT. Haven't had an issue since.

nvidia surround allows you to spread your single monitor on 3 screens, as much as using a single client per monitor + a 4th one for "other stuff". Just to say there's no difference here between the 2. In future, when EVE will support dx11 and tassellation I think having Physix support could be a nice plus. I don't know how AMD is working with such effects tbh, I'm sure it will work somehow, but Physx is Physx :p

May not matter. People with either type are having problems with game freezes. CCP needs to fix something in the game that came with one of the followup patches to inferno. Or at least identify why some people are having problems and tell us what settings either in-game or out of game we need to change so that we can play eve again. |
