I'd like to bring the idea back up for consideration by the devs..I woud like to propose to CCP that the hundred million or so dead/dormant trial accounts that have never been activated since trial end from the last 7 years be deleted and the names contained therin released for new players/characters. Namespace and server space will be released...the whole EvE community has known for years....we NEED names!!!
CCP can simply send an email giving them notice (like the emails we all get inviting us back after 6 months of not playing) and then terminating the accounts after the given time. My proposal is for dormant TRIAL accounts only. If a player has activated then in all fairness they should be able to keep name and character for any future use.
Thoughts?.

Yeah, I was checking up on some names and the one I wanted was taken by a '03 trail account still in the naval academy, it has been inactive for almost a decade.
Clean up the database and rid those dead accounts.

I got a better Idea that CCP might like that wont totally **** off ppl who log in after 3-7 years of in-activeness to find no characters on their account. In most mmo's when characters are merged to a new server free character name changes are given to players who's names would be taken. Why don't we just apply a similar concept and simply clear inactive character names and give them random generated serial numbers. Once the person starts his account again upon logging in will be notified that player has lost his name and must rename his character before logging in. Simple. Lets not go around deleting ppls ****. |

Wanna point out the emotionally disturbed people that get hacked off logging into a game they never subscribed to 3-7 years later, finding that their FREE TRIAL chars are missing? IMO: Send them for some mental counseling or a refill on their prescriptions.
The OP isn't talking about paid accounts, only purging trial accounts that never subscribed - only several year old trial accounts at that. This has spank to do with something anyone has paid for. |

This is a good idea though it seems to me that with the allowance of last names, that people really shouldn't have that hard of a time coming up with a name.
But it does seem like a good idea to delete the old trial accounts. http://amarrian.blogspot.com/ -á~ Roleplay blog.http://sovereigntywars.wordpress.com/ ~ Faction War blog. |

Agree but only for trial account dormant for a period of time.. not for any non trial account. In other words any account that has ever has a subscription active is off limits. |

I agree completely with this (even though I've never had issues with unavailable names). Only so long as the activated accounts aren't even TOUCHED. I've been inactive for 1-2 year increments during my time as an EVE player, and having my account deleted, or even having to rename my player, would NOT make me happy.
+1 for the idea, ma'am. |

get rid of the unpaid trial accounts first definatly
but deleting old characters that don't get used no thanks, those toons might have legacy's/history attached to them, or more importantly many veteran eve players return eventually

This I agree with.
I'd like to say this. I've introduced a lot of people to the game, and not one of them has ever used a reactivated trial account to do it. There are a few reasons for this.
People usually don't remember the login credentials for a 4 year old account.
Steam often has $5 eve sales, but these only cover new accounts, not existing ones, including trials.
The buddy system only works for new accounts, not existing ones, including trials.
Basically, theres zero incentive for people to use an old account.
Also, I know that new players don't really understand this, but two weeks is not a lot of training time. If they have to retrain it, they'll deal with it somehow, poor muffins.
So ya, if you've paid for an account, that should reserve your name and account indefinitely. But all abandoned trials more then a year old should be deleted. |

Anyone who had paid for the service should be protected from having thier names wiped out. agree. but maybe also for paid accounts after 2 years of inactivity. send them 3 mails, free up the name if there is no reaction / objection coming from them. i even expect most of those email addresses to be invalid ;) enjoying the order cancellation confirmation? sometimes CCP listens - there is hope after all :) www.eveonline.com/ingameboard.asp?a=topic&threadID=1431503 more ideas that need your support: https://forums.eveonline.com/default.aspx?g=posts&m=261507#post261507 |

How can you tell exactly, that the character has been inactive for the last 10 years?
And how can you tell it is a trial account?

+1 providing it's never-paid trials only. (I realise the OP said this, but some people *cough* el alasar *cough* have suggested taking out inactive paid accounts too. This should not happen.) I've never personally had an issue with name conflicts, but this would free up a lot of names, and probably also take some load off the server. Let's...just assume there's some kind of signature here, 'k? ... ... OH WAIT. |

I agree, on a rolling basis EVERY trial account over 1 year old and never converted should be wiped out totally.
It would just take some time and careful scripting to do, but CCP is capable, as long as no one named themselves boot.ini New Player "boost" https://forums.eveonline.com/default.aspx?g=posts&m=243993#post243993 Mining + War Decks = yummy! https://forums.eveonline.com/default.aspx?g=posts&t=25608&find=unread |
