Edited by: Marchocias on 10/06/2010 21:16:39 Sorry, I know there are a number of threads about this PI thing, but I wish to address a particular issue.
Lets say you have placed an extractor down on a spot, and it generates 249 m3 of stuff every hour. Then you can conveniently have a single, unupgraded link (250 m3 / hour) to your storage facility, and you're making efficient use of it.
Now, lets say you find a marginally better spot, which gives you 251 m3 per hour. You will now have to upgrade the link to a 500 m3 in order to move any of the stuff.... there is no option of wasting the stuff that you cannot carry.
This is obviously utterly stupid; not moving ANYTHING because you can't move ALL of it simply doesn't make sense. Also - why get punished because you found something marginally better?
Its a little bit like not eating any of your dinner because the portion size is too big.
Anyway, I hope CCP can find a way of fixing this issue (I understand its less simple when u have multiple routes using the same link).
Edit: Don't get me wrong - I rather like the PI, and look forward hopefully (possibly naively) to it being fleshed out more in the future.

This is part of the art and science of running a planetary operation.
Remember that an upgraded link does not cost money but it does cost more CPU/Grid. If you are barely making use of its capacity work to make better use of it or reconfigure your setup.
The people who are good at maximizing what they have will be more successful than those who don't. What separates the noobs from the industrialist.

Do you know that you can select how much stuff to move across a link when you first create a route?

When you create a route, the first click alters the UI such that there is a small box where you can edit the quantity to be routed. This quantity is the max available by default, and a second click confirms, so if you're double-clicking to route you're probably not noticing this option.
I think that in the scenario you describe you can choose to route 250m3 using this mechanism, and the extra 1m3 will simply be discarded.

Yes, this is true
However, when you reset the extractors to mine again, you'll have to reissue the partial transfer order for each extractor, which means it's generally easier just to use a longer cycle time and avoid the problem _____________________ Horrors! Demons in the deep! |

Believe me, I'm wallowing in an appropriately deep pit of embarrassment!
