...or is it considered an exploit of some sort? I initally thought that it was ok but then I remembered some half-cogent factoid that the powers that be might have changed this. Can anybody shed some light on this please?

Ah, I forgot all about that trick! I got a "Some guy scrambles you" message the other day and I figured it was just a UI glitch, but it was probably the can trick. So I don't know if it's allowed, but some people are apparently still doing it.

What about a character named "you" ?
Would it be an exploit to scramble him as well?
PC for character named "you"...
EDIT: Never mind, not possible.
But any kind of combination of the same idea basically...

When someone warp scrambles something nowadays you get a message saying the guy in question has started scramming "something belonging to character name."
E. g. "HiSec Greepha has started warp scrambling cargo container belonging to Hapless KareBare."
IIRC. I'm a hapless karebare myself so not too sure about those things. Honest.

I could just as easily create a char named "Ifly Uwa1k" and scramble that and you would be like "DUDE WTF??!?!?!!!?!!11!+11+4855"

Trying to get a noob to fire on them and get their ship sploded by concord  it should be frowned on but only round noob areas like the "Free Stuff" cans

It's treated as an exploit and always has been. That is to say it'll get you warned/suspended/banned if you get repeated complaints but in the past 6 years, despite ccp fixing a huge number of exploits they've never bothered to simply prevent you naming objects as "you".
It's exploitable enough to get you banned, but not exploitable enough to fix. Ambiguity as been ccps Achilles heel since forever, but it's always the ignorant player that is punished

They changed how the message is conveyed. First it was "xxx is scrambling "you"" which could have caused issues and because of that could get you into trouble. Now the message reads "xxx is scrambling a container named "you"" which means you have to be pretty stupid to fall for it, and thus it's no longer an exploit.
