I've followed a pretty big amount of the eve-on-ubuntu guides on these forums, and so far I haven't found anybody with my problem. When i start up EVE with wine (without a virtual desktop) it performs very slowly. Every time something happens on-screen, the picture freezes until there is no movement. If I start up EVE in a virtual desktop with the same resolution as my screen, there is seemingly no problems with the graphics. The menu runs without lag. There is an issue, however. The blue background and the 'tyrannis' splash screen is still there, and it seems to be trying to force itself on top. This causes the screen to flicker rapidly between the virtual desktop background with the splash screen, and the game client itself. http://i670.photobucket.com/albums/vv68/mibias/Screenshot.png

Edited by: vallaphat on 13/06/2010 13:14:41 one complete reinstall later, I discover that I had some compiz effect that caused EVE (and other games) to be ****ed. I just have to disable compiz while i game, and everything works.

Funny, I use compiz and have no issues. Could you elaborate a little on WHICH effect compiz was running that was causing the problems? Possibly the hardware you're using as well as video card?

Originally by: Calronicus I'm having the same problem wondering how I turn compiz off.
Simple fix:
open terminal and type:
metacity --replace &
When done with EVE and you want it back on, reopen terminal and type:
compiz --replace &
Oh, and if you're using another WM just replace "metacity" with the manager you're using in the command.
The "&" key is important so that the process is detached from the terminal which means you can close it after issuing the command.
For gnome and KDE you can do the above commands with an "alt+f2" which opens a run dialog.

you could also just install the 'fusion-icon' package in ubuntu.
You'll get a little icon in your system tray that you can use to switch window managers as well as tweak some other compiz settings.
Remember to add fusion-icon to your start up applications if you want it to start up automatically.

Ok so now I have a new problem. I reinstalled wine and got the newest ATI Catalyst. I got Wintetrix installed.
So the problem is now that I can't get to the character login. It dies while the Tyranis loading screen is up.
Any suggestions ?
