In all seriousness, this is good news. If the Afghans are able to exploit it, we may get more people getting rich off the mines and fewer turning to extremism. However, the pessimist in me fears that we'll just get loads of foreign investors in to lay down the infrastructure, and Afghanistan will only see a fraction of the money generated. ____________________

Hahahahaha.
This stuff is going to be exploited by vast international corporations that are going to turn Afghanistan into a stripmine, backed by the world's largest mercenary force, the United States armed forces. Locals might get some decent jobs out of it, but none of the profit will end up in Afghani hands.

You said that someone would say that Bush knew all along. I don't think anyone knew all along. However, this great wealth is in a extremely poor country occupied by a US invasion force - Of course all the profit is going straight to US-backed multinationals.
Please don't confuse healthy cynicism with conspiracy theories.
