"Oh not again!", I hear you say.
Well, I found a thread about this here but it auto-locked for being unattended for over 90 days. So no thread necro for me, and another thread on what to old timers may be a jaded topic.
Onto the topic at hand, then. Having read the above thread and the descriptions of Procurement, I still have the problem that one chap had about 4 or 5 years ago, i.e. I don't understand what it does.
Could someone please explain (in very precise detail, since I REALLY want to comprehend) what this skill actually does?

Procurement allows you to select a station where you want to place a buy order (within a certain range).
Without the skill, you can only place buy orders at the station you're docked at. With the skill, you can also place buy orders at other stations (without travelling there), you don't even have to be docked (so you could place buy orders while travelling/mining/missioning).
Remotely placed buy orders are limited to 'station' by default. That is, only items at the station where the buy order has been placed can be sold to the buy order. If you want to extend that to other stations (within the same system, or a few jumps, or region-wide) you'll need the skill 'Visibility'.

I'm honestly not sure it could be spelled out any easier than this. OP if you still don't get it I don't think you ever will.

It's a bit crappy. I want to buy stuff at the local trade hub a few jumps away, but it only lets me use "X jumps", so I have to go flying around picking my stuff up from lots of stations, instead. I expected a more sophisticated system than this (or am I missing something?).
Thanks for helping.

Are you missing something? Well, you could try to play Tetris. There all stuff comes to you.
In EVE one can make ISKs with hauling for others. Think about how much your laziness is worth to you and setup a courier contract to get it hauled. --

Sounds to me like you are mixing up the procurement and marketing skills.
Procurement allows you to specify which station you want to place a buy order in. The distance from you to this remote buy order being dictated by the level you have the skill trained too.
Marketing allows you to place a buy order in the station you are currently docked in, and spread a net across other stations and systems (again skill dependent) to try and catch all direct sales within those other stations.
So, for example , procurement will allow you to place a buy specifically order in Jita 4-4 without even having to enter the system, and this order will only buy from sales made in that station.
Using the marketing skill to try to do the same job from a station in perimeter would require setting up a buy order in a station in perimeter with a range of 1 jump. This would however mean that people in any station within 1 jump of you could sell to that order, and hence you end up with items dotted all over the place.

Actually, you can do multi-jump buy orders without any skills at all, as long as you are docked at the station which will be at the center of the buy order.
It sounds like he is missing the top of the buy order popup which defaults to the current station. If you have the Procurement skill and click that, you will be able to type in the name of a different station. Do this to make a single-station buy order in a place you are currently not at.

Just train it all to V and place orders for whole region it's not like 1 month of combained training is that long.

Thank you for the kind words Felix I agree with your analysis.

Procurement: Allows you to place a buy order in a *remote station*. You can always place buy orders in the station you are at.
Visibility: Allows you to specify the range of your orders *in remote stations* You can specify any range for your buy orders if they are in the station you are currently docked at.
Marketing: allows you to sell (or place sell orders) on items in remote locations.

Procurement, Visibility, Marketing... would a couple-few levels of each be pretty standard training for a new player?
Do these constitute a relatively "essential" set of trade skills?

1) Train Procurement 2) When creating buy order, click on the station name at the top of the buy order dialog box 3) Choose "Select Station", and enter part of the station name (ie the system name) and then choose the station you want from the list 4) Set range to station (or other if you prefer) 5) ? 6) Profit!
There is no need to run around picking stuff up from other stations if you don't want to. I am not sure what you are expecting to make the system more sophisticated.

"essential" set of trade skills = not really.
relatively "essential" set of trade skills = sure.
It depends on how much trading you do and how often you do it in that station as opposed to somewhere else in the region.

Not exactly those skills, but yes, it is not bad to have some points in the skill group Trade.
Essentials for non-traders are:
Accounting - reduces the tax payments Contracting - increases the number of contracts you can create Marketing - to sell items out of your assets from remote
You will however need some levels in Trade first. As soon as you go deeper into trade and start to place buy and sell orders will you find a use for all other skills in this skill group rather quickly. --
