Hey all,
I recently installed Ubuntu 64bit (version 10.04 i believe), and have been trying to get eve installed and running under WINE but i'm having a few problems.
I downloaded the most recent copy of wine, got winetricks and the 3D/corefonts packages that were recommended to get.
went to run the downloader through wine and it worked no problem although the downloader crashed at around 290mb downloaded....
downloaded the offline installer but it won't run in WINE, keep getting an error message saying that it's not marked as an executable.
navigated to my windows drive and tried running the windows installation through wine and it all loaded up fine until i actually got into the game and could see my ship but everything had frozen. so i was forced to ctrl+alt+f1 and kill the process.
after reading a bit more on the forums i went and made the changes to the registry that were suggested and now the windows installation of EVE locks up at about 75% loading (after character selection)
would really like to get EVE running properly under linux but am so far unsuccessful, I'm a bit of a linux noob to be honest but i do prefer it as an OS so any help you can give me would be greatly appreciated :)
I'm using a NVIDIA 9800 GTX+ gfx card (if that's any help)
many thanks in advance

have now managed to fix all the problems (so far :) )
re-downloaded the offline installer using a download manager (used KGet)
told WINE to run as virtual desktop
Renamed the jukebox folder
all is currently working fine :)

Hi Daros.
You need to use the offline installer. You need to right click it, go to permissions and mark it to be allowed to run as an executable.
Also, Oh god... NEVER EVER EVER RUN STUFF FROM THE WINDOWS DRIVE. It just doesn't work.
What ya'll need to do is this:
0) Make sure you have gone to the nVidia Site and installed the latest Drivers. The Open Source ones suck massively. 0a) Once you do that, make sure to follow the instructions on the wine website to add their Repo and get the newest RC you can get (as you are a newb, I won't suggest compiling your own wine just yet :P) 0b) Remember to reboot after installing the drivers before continuing 1) In your home folder, delete the ".wine" folder (Press control and H to show hidden folders). 2) In a terminal, type "winecfg" (No "", Case is important) 3) This will rebuild your .wine folder. 4) use winetricks to install "corefonts" (for the EULA) and vcrun2005 and vcrun2008 (so patches work later on). Do not install the DX9 DLLS, they are not needed. 5) Install EvE 5a) Make a sandwich while EvE installs. 5b) Eat sandwich. Hmmmm.... Sandwich! 6) Type "winecfg" into a terminal again. Under applications, add eve.exe, then with eve.exe selected, go tot he graphics tab, and tell it to run in a virtual desktop the same resolution as your screen. This is because eve likes to crash when not in it. 7) Browse your "C" drive and go to EVE/res/audio and rename the Jukebox folder. IMPORTANT. If you don't, a Kitten will die (and eve will crash). 8) Run eve. If the screen crashes at the splash, reinstall the graphics drivers again, reboot and it should be fixed. If not, cry in a corner and come back for more help. 9) Once In eve, don't do anything yet! Login, then BEFORE selecting a Character, Disable EvE Voice (and Audio, if you want) from the Escape Menu. EvE Voice is essential to turn off. It causes issues on Ubuntu. 10) Enjoy Eve. I hope this works for you!
And some general tips: Everything in Linux is Case Sensitive. EVERYTHING. If you are really new, I suggest looking into Linux Mint. It's Ubuntu with a whole extra ton of stuff and has a much nicer menu and feel than Ubuntu. It's what I use!
Edit: Damnit, you had to go and fix it while I was typing out a nice helpful post :( Oh well, if it works, don't **** with it. #1 Rule of Linux :P

hehe, many thanks for taking the time to post anyway :)
i can't help fixing things, i'm a tinkerer (think that's why i like linux so much) i'm not a complete noob to it, have used SuSe and Mandrake and a few other distro's in the past (mainly for tinkering with) but when it comes to things going wrong i'd rather ask for help and get it right than end up making things worse (in this case i got it working but it's not always the case :p )

Crap. Sorry for not answering, I was called away D:
You have to rclick it, allow it to run as a executable and then open a terminal where the file is and type:
sudo ./name-of-driver.run
you can also do
sudo ./firstfewlettersthena*

You need to enter your password. It does let you type, it just doesn't show it on screen.

In short, don't.
Apt (or whatever) gets it from their Repos, which can lag behind the manufacturers releases.
Always download from the ATi or nVidia Websites.
As for the password, you type it in, then hit enter. It doesn't show up when you type for security reasons.
As for the offline installer: http://www.eveonline.com/download/?fallback=1&

No. I didn't use yours. I got some help when i was on eve. Anyway, I do know about winetricks and do have those installed. The client will load and i got the EULA and was able to accept it. I have the latest vid drivers for navidia, and it locks up on traveling outside a staition and also locks up in the station saying about remote log off of eve client when he didnt quit the game. so thats why i came here. also, i dont know what the repo is, and all that full jass as i dont know a darn thing about unbuntu. this is my first time using it. *So in a sence i have it a steel wall and cant figure it out.
