The following post has been certified "tl;dr" friendly
Recently came back to EVE after nearly 2 years away.
Need to ***** some lvl4's to get some isk together ready for joining a 0.0 pvp corp again... eventually.
All my lvl4 agents are Caldari Navy
I only fly Amarr.
EM vs Guristas = isk/hr fail
Paladin > Apoc
Paladin setups greatly appreciated... |

Hardeners depends on mission type. For missions with minmatar ships fit warriors and valkyries.

There is no need for tracking computers when you will track much better if web your targets. You can kill fast even some frigs that way, and cruisers in 90% cases. Also, you don't need more range, cause you want to kill in <40km for easy salvaging, and that is basically your optimal with multies.
Tank with 3 hardeners and without rep rig is weak for some missions IMO.

Ah ha, I can see where I've been going wrong on EFT now.
Overlooked the fact that the faction repper uses 300 less grid than T2.
Wondered why nothing worked that I came up with
Guess that's put me another 100 mill over-budget

You could say it's the paladin's one weakness. There simply isn't enough grid for a complete T2 fit if you intend to use Tachyon Beam Lasers (and why wouldn't you). That Amarr faction rep is good though, slightly higher cap per second, but higher rep per second to match.

On that subject, do you have any problems with the reduced sensor strength compared to the Apoc?
The Guristas Extinguishers and Nullifiers manage to lock my Apoc out for nearly a minute sometimes. Is it even worse with the Paladin?
Do you try to counter this, or just throw max dps out inbetween sensor jams and leave your drones to do the work for a bit?

NPC jamming doesn't work on a sensor strength basis, it's pure chance. Relatively speaking your Paladin should be locked out just as much as your Apoc is.
My guess would be to simply annihilate as much as possible between jams and letting the drones play around in the meantime.
But Guristas isn't really a good target for Amarr laser ships, their EM resistance is silly. A Paladin is probably better than most, but still far from ideal.
I generally mission in Amarr space where lasers feel right at home and I mainly have tracking disruption to contend with.

If you're comfortable using boosters I find this works a treat... can switch the mods round to suit, you'll probably need a PG3 or 5 implant to make everything fit.
4 TachyonII 2 Salvagers 1 Tractor
Medium Cap Booster (800s) on a longer mission you may use 10 or so, but no harm on overstocking - most missions you'll use none or 1. 2 Tracking Comps (faction give a worthwhile boost) tend to run one optimal, one tracking but switch to suit the mission. Sebo or Web
Centum A Type Reflective (switch for kinetic) Centum A Type Thermic Core C-Type LAR 4 IN Heatsinks
Aux Nano Pump and Nanobot Accelerator Rigs
The deadspace passive mods can be picked up for 15mill or so, the core c type is 160-200mill, not quite as much rep amount as IN LAR but more cap efficient and not to heavy on PG. 4 IN heatsinks combined with the tracking comps(+optimal) let your Tachs (Multifrequency) hit for great damage upto 50 and even further which I find suits most missions.
For the odd mission where you think you'll be there for a while you can still get it to run with enough tank by switching mids to cap chargers + 1 comp, dropping a heatsink or 2 for a mix of EAN,CPR or Tracking Enhancer.
Vs Gurista I think I'd drop a heatsink for an extra kin hardner as the missile spam can really hurt.
I hate guristas, jamming gits, get your standings up with a decent amarr agent and you'll love the paladin even more.

I use a slightly different pulse fit, that is undoubtedly inferior in every way to the tachyon one, but then I don't really mission for isk.
Just thought id throw it in among all these Tachy ones.

I have never really PVE-ed much, my only lvl 4 agents are all Caldari.
I only have access to negative quality lvl 2 Amarr agents and it isn't worth the grind to get them any higher.
I also have no skills for anything other than Amarr ships apart from Caldari Frigate 3 that I must have trained when I was a n00b.

I usually prefer t2 megapulses - still decent range with scorch and better tracking - Moreover I use a different midslot layout than most with an AB, cap booster and dual webs (cap booster works better for me because I usually dual client with a shield tanked alt and thus have a shield transporter in high for incoming peak dps on him - plus I like having the webs to dispose those scramming frigs more quickly). I don't really need a lot of cap booster charges as I can sustain most missions without repping my alt, but when things get hairy, it's good to know the alt can tank 2400 dps if need be.
Low I use pretty much the same as most: 2-3 navy heat sinks +/- navy eanm, DC 2, 2 hardeners, navy LAR.

Not saying you can't use them though, it'll just be slow going. Elite Guristas cruisers especially will pose problems with a base EM resistance of close to 90%.
Why not try and nber-tank a Sacrilege against Kinetic/Thermal and use that? It's an Amarr missile boat (and I assume most of your SP will be in gunnery), but it will do quite a bit better. It tanks rather well too and your effective DPS may actually end up being higher in certain missions just because you can circumvent the one resist your lasers struggle against.

this is my fitting only with a meta 4 rep, lolcheap!
and meh web, everything that you would bother webbing should be dead well before it gets into web range.
maybe worth using a fed navy web (drop a TC) + megapulse setup for damsel.

Why would you use Tracking Computers to try to hit frigs and cruisers when you get a decent bonus to webbers?

Tracking computers can be used to boost tracking or optimal depending on the script used.
Boosting your optimal means you can use multi's for more of your enemies which is an equivalent DPS boost over having to switch to gamma's for example.
I suppose this must be my sig. I'll do something cool with it eventually. |

cuz webs work awesome at 100km.
the TCs are for added damage projection (range) not for tracking. and if the frigs get close thats why ya got drones

Federation web works at 14km. It helps a lot with killing nasty frigs (the one that web/scramble you and are hard to kill). You will usually kill with your guns webbed cruiser too. BC and BS you will hit much better if webbed than with TC.
Also, I don't want to shot anything at 100km cause I salvage and looting. So majority of targets I kill at range <40km. Webs are for those that manage to get to close. And don't tell me that you will hit them with TCs in close orbit. On the other hand, if you web close orbiting target, your drones will eat them in few seconds. As I said, you can even shot them with your guns.
And using TCs to get better range is fail in case of tachyons. Why would you need better range when everything is in your optimal, even with multys?

My setup is below. I loot as I go but almost never bother salvaging. The tank easily handles all sansha/blood/angel/serp missions but I almost always skip guristas due to ECM. The tank is sufficient with proper aggro management but it is very minimal. The dual webs allow you to dispatch targets at point blank range easily, even elite frigs and those web drones. Obviously you should let drones chew on them while you focus your guns on bigger stuff first. But still, that effective 98-99% speed reduction between the two of them is immensely powerful, 18km range overloaded is handy too. It will cap out after a few minutes with everything running but the rep generally only needs to be pulsed as you should thin out the incoming dps very quickly.

90% webs at 14km are sexy but I try to make sure nothing even gets that close. yes a 90% web is probably better than a tracking speed scriped tracking comp at 14km but when they vaporize at 30-40km it doesnt really matter, and inside that range a little manual flying and trans hits almost 0 anyways.
I used to fly with a web on the paladin but I just prefer the tracking comps fit.
and yes it is nice to loot/salvage but there are a few battleships that orbit at 50km, and instapopping a few cruisers/frigs at range isn't going to make a big difference in loot/salvage.
and I haven't seen that much improvement in drone killing speed with awesome webs.
using a paladin with 2x fed navy webs and 5x hobgob IIs vs 4x caldari bandit, drones only no guns, I assume I would have a better target for them guns some quick experimentation + fraps results in
not webbed 0:07-> 0:34: 27s dual webbed 0:40->1:07 27s dual webbed 1:17->1:52 35s not webbed (although looked like he was bumping into the station) 2:04->2:31 27s |
