Seriously. We've just had a downtime which was four or five times longer than anticipated, losing data (and at least one round of regular downtime operations) in the process, but all everyone is talking about is free skill points and a free ship. The CCP employee who came up with this communication strategy deserves a raise.

Wasn't the CSM involved in that? Vaguely recall something in that news item. Would be neat to find out how that proces went.

Originally by: Mandrill I got to see first hand the CSMÆs involvement in the decision making process as a meeting was held up, just before TQ came back up after its extended downtime, sot hat they could be consulted with regards to what sort of compensation should be given to players for loss of playing time. A variety of options were put forward, but the one you got (a skillpoint pool to spend as you please) was approved by the CSM after a short discussion.

Dear Sir, I dunno what you are talking about. "Communication was ok" is an understatement. It was brilliant, awesome, superb. It could hardly have been better for CCP. That's the point of this thread. They handled it excellently. (BP could knock on CCPs door to get some advice in this regard.)

I have played alot of internet based video games through the years. NO other companies staff even comes close to the accessibility of the CCP staff.
I was able to find plenty of information and even communicate directly with CCP staff via Twitter and local chat on the test server.
CCPs connection to their customer is far above any other software developer and even far exceeds the ISP that I work for.

How is CCP having great crisis communication 'fail on my part'?
For the record, I had my long skills set and had nothing ingame which needed attention - other than my service which only gets users when the server is up anyway - so I've had no problems arising from the downtime. I'm simply making an observation about CCP's communication, in my opinion they handled very well. This is how such things should be handled.
Losing support for a protracted war? Announce that the country is rich beyond belief! Had an extended extended extended downtime? Announce a new mechanism with free skillpoints for everyone!

In my experience CCP provide excellent communication and always forewarn of potential extended downtime. They are also hugely flexible and often agree to things that many games companies would simply ignore or laugh at.
The fact that the CSM exists is ground-breaking and given that the dev's actually read and post on the forums I think it's fair to say that the feedback channels are excellent.
Ok, so the server was off for longer than expected. Who bloody cares.

Yep, judging from the lack players riling CCP wrg to the extended downtime. It's a little hard to be angry when you get presents.
On the other hand, the PI debacle and the broken P4 items ... that's classic making a disaster out of a disaster. |

I think that CCP did a great job of communicating. I think CCP Fallout was up for like the whole day/night tweating updates, and she wasn't the only CCP person tweating. What you don't have twitter? Oh I guess the FAIL is on your end..

I think their communication was pretty poor. I did not receive a single phone call or email from them during this situation.

Edited by: Whitehound on 25/06/2010 13:32:35 The communication during the shutdown was not good. There was no information about what had happened, the references to Twitter and Facebook provided no further information, and only in the evening did we get some first information about what had happened.
The initial estimate was wrong, but what made it worse was that it looked as if they could get the game back up any minute and throughout the entire first day. In the end it seemed as if they had no idea what they were actually doing.
I wish they would have told us the minute they encountered the problem, what it was, what they are going to do next and how long they will need for it. This is what I would have called "good communications".
Getting gifts now is fun and better than an apology. The best way of doing it however is to say that it is going to take 6 hours and then getting it done within 6 hours, and no free stuff.
The way I read Estel's comment is that he is mocking CCP. If so then it is uncalled for seeing that CCP is keeping us happy. --

If you actually looked at their other forms of communication such as twitter / facebook they were updated (well twitter) every hour or so, with small deadlines or jst the smallest of information to reassure the gamers.
CCP had a mini crisis which IMO and A LOT of others opinion they worked through and did great at fixing, i'm sure the ccp staff pulled all nighters in order to fix it, when their forums were down they did a great job informing their customers about it, on other forms of communication, something probably no other company would go out of their way to do.
People now talk about the SP and ships cause well they got past the server issue and look forward to tuesday, i suggest you do the same matey

Yes because they obviously knew exactly what the problem was the minute they went over the 6 hour deadline.

I think next time instead of the "Best possible case" time being advertised ccp should put the worst possible "sky falling, power out, flooding, fire, volcano under london, second coming of jesus" time and then when it comes back up early everyone thanks ccp.

I disagree. Perhaps it wasn't perfect, but there were quite regular updates across different channels. Remember there was a time when CCP would go completely blank during downtimes, with the website returning a 404 (of course you don't remember, young as you are). My main point was the timing of the announcement of the free skillpoints, distributed through a "hot-dropped" new system, and the reference to "another gift", making people curious - a curiosity which was soon satisfied by a dev blog. That was pure brilliance, and the person who came up with that does deserve a raise.

Again I disagree. People now talk about the SP and ships because CCP released that news now. With previous issues of this kind, the forums would be filled with threads about the issue for at least a day, sometimes multiple days. But this time we had the announcement of a new system to distribute skill points within a few hours or so of the server being up, and a dev blog about a gift the same night. That's all people are talking about now, they're curious and want to know more, they are speculating, it's all that occupies their minds. It could've been very different (as evidenced from earlier experiences), but it isn't and that's all down to the excellent communication strategy.
Some people have interpreted my comments as a veiled complaint, but it really isn't. This is how communication should be handled. Proactive, pre-emptive, setting the agenda, gentle and not-so-gentle nudges to a particular topic. CCP is right in doing that, and they're doing it well.

Don't get into an argument with whitehound about the new system. He seems to honestly believe CCP were already developing this prior to the TQ "Level-up" _____________________________________ Haruhiist since December 2008

i agree completely with Estel
the marketing of things was genius, get everyone riled up by the server being down, and several hours longer than expected. At that point ppl start going crazy and scrounging around fro any information possible.
And then the server comes back up and u find.......free SP and gift?!
It kinda forced everyone's attention on it...sneaky sneaky CCP... |

The server did go blank and stayed blank long after the announced return of the server if you have not noticed it.
