All right, so I was belt-ratting in pertineere(sp?) about 5 minutes ago and I jumped into a belt that had some people already in it. They had cleared out all but one of the serpentis before I got there, but since they were only using drones and I couldn't see any actual ships, I decided to jump in and kill the last one. I felt like it might be kind of rude to do that, but since at least two of the people in the system were part of the corp that podded me the other day so I was like "**** 'em".
Then they appeared (uncloaked or just got closer, not sure?) and and got pretty close to me. There were two, a thorax and a minmatar battlecruiser, and I was just in a cruiser so I would have been screwed. I powered up my shield booster and waited for a bit. Then they left.
I jumped to another belt, killed some more serpentis and then all of a sudden one of them showed up. I waited and sure enough the other one showed up. They started targeting me and I jumped to a station, giving them a "PEACE *****ES!!!! AHAHAHAHA" as I made my glorious escape.
Then they said, and this is essentially the point of this post, "hi5". So that's my question, what does "hi5" mean? Did I actually have reason to be scared? What's the deal?

Good sir... your story game me a good chuckle. Because of this, I will explain what actually happened to you.
First off, if you were in 0.5 to 1.0 space and did not loot any wrecks that were not your own... you were in no danger. They just targeted you to make you sweat.
Second, there is no such thing as "killstealing" in this game... so you were not being a **** by shooting the rats.
Third, the "hi5" they replied back to you with... sound it out. "hi five" From my perspective, that statement sounds like a taunt. Your best bet is to be witty back to them or not to say anything at all. DO NOT smack talk them as you seem to have done in this incident. If you do, it will keep their attention and we will be reading you "story" in the Crime and Punishment section.
Hope this helps. _______________________

Okay. Poaw, Mfume, you gotta tell me, what does the hi5 mean. I would have assumed it nothing but fun, but you guys are entro and up until like the other day I was UIF. So I was stressing.
It's funny, I quit my old corp because I was the only active player in it. But then I started my own, and now I'm the only player in it, period.

And thank you Shah, I'll keep the smack talk down, though in my defense I typed it in irony so it totally was witty. HA! (It was not witty)

Drones don't conceal ships. One of them probably left his drones there by mistake and then came back for them.

Zoom out of the belt then you can see people warping into it. Your best bet is to keep 30+ km away from others. Most ships will be able to scramble your warp drive and prevent you from warping out only within this range.

Having been podded a time or two myself while playing in low sec space, I find that when fleeing from superior firepower, it is best to be humorous rather than taunting. A taunt while have the reavers pursuing you for days... or longer. A humorous parting word, will often end pursuit, hostilities and perchance invite future alliances. However, in the end, if you play in low-sec, expect to get burnt... eventually. Take it with grace and you'll have more fun.

In my opinion, EVE is not a game you want to smack-talk just anyone in, unless you are a pirate.
Sure, if you are at war, go ahead. It comes with the territory.
But if you don't want to make a lot of random enemies, some which can be a lot more powerful and persistent than you'd expect, don't do it.

Your story sounds familiar, but it had a happy ending because your opponents were noobs, imo.
I just recently got lured back to EVE by that special 5 day offer after a year of absence. One of the last things I did back then, was ratting in low sec with my Gallente BC. With combat drones (which, I admit, was kind of stupid when you need to be prepared for fast exits). I did not pay attention for about 30 seconds, and two BS were in, scrambling, leeching and finally podding me.
That was it for me in low sec

My experience with the phrase Hi Five - is from people saying "Hi Five!" and raising a hand for the other person slap their palm. See the second Terminator movie for a demonstration.
This is usually done by people on a team congratulating themselves as a team for accomplishing their purpose.
Thus - it would seem to me - that these two guys warped in on you and scared you by targeting you into running away.
Perhaps they didn't want you competing with them for the belt rats and just wanted to chase you off.
Now - if they'd been serious about this - being targeted would have been followed by being webbed and warp scrambled - then being blown up.
Had they intended to blow you up and failed - why would they be Hi Fiving each other?
As a rule ... trash talking is lame. It's just a waste of time regardless of the circumstances. Do your job - and move on.
Once upon a time in Jita ... or one of the other trade hubs ... I remember someone going "Well Hello War Target!" in local. Shortly after which ... there was the person who had said that in their pod. If they had spent their time attacking the person they were at war with - instead of making some smart remark - then maybe they wouldn't have gotten their ship blown up. Absorbing the enemy's alpha just so you can be a smart ass - isn't good policy.

Okay, so I talked to the guys, here's what happened:
They were trying to kill me but I warped out before they could tackle me. I was extremely lucky there. (EXCEPT! "In my experience there's no such thing as luck" right?) Anyway, they were "hi5"-ing themselves because they kind of trucked up something that should have been easy for them. Poaw referenced that. He was one of the pilots.
And about the trash-talking, the "peace peaches!" was meant to be tongue-in-cheek. I must have forgotten about how that sort of humor doesn't really read well in the local chat box and how people have a tendency to get very upset while playing EVE.
