Databases and Computer Systems/Networks and clusters can be temperamental. - I understand CCP's approach and im sure they are doing the best they can. I doubt they want to upset players who are paying their wages. And about the SP..
I feel CCP is doing the right thing with the SP reward. Many players may disagree! Although, EVERYONE gets the SP and "as a whole" it is balanced. - CCP is just stating "here we recognize our mistake" and we want to give our EVE members a bit of assistance and apologize for maybe some issues that didn't go over well.
Anyways, thus far nice job CCP - I cant imagine the Cluster/Networking and database issues but sounds to me like you are doing ok.

Same mistake over and over. Haven't learned anything?
Just say: Downtime 5 hours - even if you expect only 2 hours. And if you then need 4 hours you are still 1 hour ahead and everyone will cheer and say how awesome you are.
But if you say 2 hours downtime and then it turns out to be 4 hours, then people will yell and boooo and you just leave a bad impression.
Same amount of time passed. Totally different impression. What is the better strategy I wonder... |

Patch notes for Tyrannis 1.0.2, released June 29, 2010
CRITICAL
* Due to the unprecedented nature of the downtime on the 23rd and 24th of June, players have been awarded a number of bonus skill points to assign to a skill or skills of their choice. These skill points will be assigned to the highest skill point character on the account and can be applied by right clicking the desired skill in the character sheet.
wtf when did this slip in? ...does this also include lost time from this patch'es extended dt? =x

Thats what happen when you dont hear to the Devs. When i deploying a release and i say it will take 2 hours, the Project Manager says 'We have only one hour'. Then i say 'Why are you asking me'. He communicate the one hour and it takes 2 hours. And everybody moans. Maybe the same **** in every Company.

You know, we have this argument every patch. CCP is not stupid. They know just as well as we do that whatever time the servers are scheduled to come back is going to be off by 2-24 hours. We all know that in IT, unexpected things happen occasionally, like last week. Even my generous +6hrs that I add to every patch schedule in my head didn't come close to covering that one, and I believe there were real problems that they didn't expect that needed to be fixed. (Of course, we never got the dev blog about it that we were promised, so who knows)
My point is, this dt extension issue is normally not an IT issue. it's a marketing issue. Their marketing department has told them that they are better off giving a early estimate of return, and extending it 1-2 hours at a time. If you think about it, it has a few advantages from a business standpoint.
1) With shorter announced dts, there are less people complaining in the weeks leading up to the DT 2) By extending the deadline 1-2 hours at a time, it forces people to visit their website constantly to get the new restoration time, increasing hits and traffic. 3) by intentionally making the restore times on the early side, there is no pressure to meet them, which takes the pressure off the it team, and effectivly allows them to take all the time they need to do their work properly, rather than sacrificing quality for speed on patches. 4) Believe it or not, bringing the servers back early would lead to a number of complaints too. ("The servers were supposed to be back up at xx:xx, and I logged in at that time to find my POS RFed already by people who had been logged in for 2 hrs already)
While I personally would rather have the DT end earlier than scheduled, (or even on time, just once!!), and I suspect the actual community liasons like CCP_Navigator would too, from a company perspective , I see why they run things the way they do. Let CCP do their Work & let them test things out.
If they dont get it right we are all going to winge that TQ has fallen over or something else has gone wrong with TQ.
Time should not matter we all are going to get something from CCP some skill points and a new ship.
We should be all happy with that and in the near future CCP might give us more gifts.
Some of you people need to grow up and understand that CCP are doing their best to get TQ running smooth again.

Edited by: Kami Starrunner on 29/06/2010 15:24:16 i agree they could be a bit more conservative on their guestimations seems they are always atleast twice as long as the need to be and as to the sp they are giving it out so they dont have to give everyone gametime hmm ccp you can do better then that...
thanks for trying.give you points for that but you didnt stick the landed this time.

Hi, CCP Navigator, Sturm here.
I've got a few suggestions that CCP could adopt to improve their downtime communications due to plumbing works, including replacing the kitchen sink. These suggestions are :
a) Blanket default ALL downtime to 1hr in length. For example, "Deployment will start at 11:00 UTC and is expected to be completed at 12:00 UTC". It would be easier since you don't have to re-type it all the time.
b) Append acronyms to the downtime message to denote downtime status. We want it to be as complicated as possible as we know anything can happen, and as such, the acronym list should be made accessible on the EveWiki. For example, "Deployment will start at 11:00 UTC and is expected to be completed at 12:00 UTC - OHMYGOD"
Acronyms list :
OHMYGOD - There were some unforeseen problems encountered, created by an unforeseened error, caused by an unforeseened CCP employee. All in all, everything was unforseened. The estimated uptime is unforseened.
OHCRAP - CCP Tuxford pushed another button causing unexpected issues. Estimated uptime, as soon as we find where Tuxford is hiding.
PWNED - Ok, who f****d up? Oops .. estimated uptime, err ... we'll get back to you on this.
These sample acronym list are non-expansive curently, but as time goes along I'm sure we can come up with more. I hope these suggestion will be seriosly considered in the interest of the greater EVE community.
Ciao!

I am a little surprised they don't give a liberal estimate, and then preface this announcement with a disclaimer saying that downtime may take up to 24 - 48 hours longer than expected, yada yada yada.
As for me, I'm at work, and expect Eve will be up when it's up.

I think a lot of us accept that estimates are just that and overruns occur, but with CCP its more than a slight or occasional overrun - its every PATCH. Would be better for all if CCP's estimates started at their most pesimistic time rather than what they think is the minimum time needed. -- Users are like a virus - each causing a thousand tiny crises until the host finally dies. |

Hope everyone set a super long skill... again. Luckily I'm still working off the skill I set prior to the server move, should be good for another 5-6 days on both accounts.
Honestly though, the fact that I (have to) plan like this for something that should only take a couple hours is comical.

exactly what i am thinking about! everyone who seriously likes this games doesn't care about an estimated downtime till, let's say 20:00 UTC and if u can fix it to get finished earlier thats great. But setting the expected downtime too early every time and adding one hour here and half an hour there can't be conducive. No whining no flaming only a suggestion.

Someone should compile an actual graph of CCP original patch DT estimates -vs- when they actually came up, and post it on the web. Let THAT get spread around the big gaming blogs a bit and see if CCP doesn't start making realistic estimates instead of the severely overly optimistic estimates for patch DT's they currently feed us.

To put this in perspective, at least there hasn't been a rollback since the early days.
Also, at least players aren't experiencing blank screens en mass like the early days.
I remember one roll back of 3 days due to database issues, and all we got compensated was less than a million isk. Granted, everyone was still mining in bantams and ospreys and not making that much yet, but still, was a slap in the face.
Also, the stuck character issues happened to EVERYONE multiple times a month...
So in light of that, this isn't that bad. Just as I said before, CCP needs to do better at estimating downtime and even over-estimating it so players and player corps can plan.

this is why people get angry, its not cuz the server is down, its because its down and shoulda been up two hours ago according to CCP's original plan, just about every patch goes this way, they really should catch up with the trend and just tell us itll take 3 times as long as they really think it will, this way if they bring it up early its better for us
