Edited by: lovely song on 30/06/2010 18:36:07 I'm a long standing eve online player, fan, friend, lover you name it and as everyone else I want CCP to do well and eve grow in size. One can argue that ccp's success can be attributted to the fact the firm itself is relativelly small and hence all people who work in the firm form effective team.
Once organizations grow bigger, it can argued that they become more bureucratic and could loose that special zazzs they used to have once they were small.
I wish CCP would always keep that amazing culture within the firm and keep eve so cool!

Don't bash blizzard simply because WoW is a shallow game. Blizzard are brilliant developers, they just have a different target demographic. I'm especially impressed by all the work they put into Starcraft II

Eve needs fast a serious competitor.
Then CCP might get awake and fix a lot of socalled small issues fast and bring some real expansions again.

Why not? Blizzard has made a career hijacking game mechanics from games that were already done better (Dune 2 preceded Warcraft by several years, Ultima underworld preceded Diablo by 5), then stealing an intellectual property to apply to it (Warhammer -> Warcraft, Warhammer 40k -> Starcraft, Conan the Barbarian -> Diablo).
Sure, the games are simple and solid, and thus much more easily accessible to idiots (and, while that might sound like I'm downing them, I'm not: idiot-proofing is a pretty good skillset to have), the company has never done a single original thing in its existence. I don't begrudge them their success, because there's nothing wrong with making generic games as such, but calling them "brilliant developers" is like calling Fred Durst a master of classical music.

In many ways you could same the same thing about anyone then. Truly original game mechanics and ideas are pretty few and far between. There is no reason to target Blizzard specifically. While the Warhammer->Warcraft comparison is pretty fair, labeling their other IPs as blatant ripoffs is probably equally unfair. The fact is they are great devs, the created some of the most beloved franchises in all of gaming, and certainly PC gaming. I'm not even talking about WoW here, just warcraft as an IP as well as SC and Diablo. Where they got/get their inspiration from really doesn't matter. I don't see entire countries watching people play tabletop Warhammer 40k as a sport.

But you do see entire countries watching people play football as a sport, and that game hardly qualifies as "brilliant", either.
Popularity is not an argument for high quality. It's an argument for minimum acceptable quality and accessibility, sure, but by your argument McDonalds makes the finest food ever to exist on the face of the planet.
Likewise, there are a lot more facebook photos of girls in low-cut tops taking ****ty pictures with a disposable camera than there are Ansel Adams originals. Are those superior art, too?

Lol. That's funny that you say blizzard hijacked game mechanics from older games.. Wow.. some peoples children..
Little news flash for you, that happens ALL the time nowadays. Want to make a game that's TRULY unique? You can't. No matter what game you could possibly make, the same argument could be used against the creation of that very same game, that it is a "ripoff" of another, older game. I don't consider starcraft to be a ripoff of ANY game, that game was truly unique.. it may be a RTS genre, much like other older games, but many things about that game were awesome and no other game has yet to truly compete with it (IMO) RTS wise.
The games you just compared blizzards too are really quite awful if you ask me. While blizzard may have "ripoff"ed game mechanics due to simply being the same genre as another game, they certainly did a great job and making HUGE hit and successful games that have yet to be rivaled.
Only way in my mind to make a truly unique game that can't be considered a rip off is to do something that few have done, successfully at least.. like RPG/FPS/RTS (fallout 3).

Edited by: Kastigar Antarius on 30/06/2010 20:59:55 Well some might disagree on the soccer thing, but that's way OT. But since we are using SC as an example. Popularity is only one component yes, it can be awful and still be horribly popular (like say...farmville). Starcraft however, is regarded as one of, if not the best, strategy game of all time. It's won more GotY awards than just about anything else. That should speak, at least in part, to its quality as a product and that it's more than just something simple/idiot proof and wildly popular. Accessibility doesn't always equate to simple. Starcraft (at least in a multiplayer/pvp sense) is easy to pick up and hard to master. There is actually a fair amount on intricacy and balance in that game.
I'm not saying I want CCP to be anything like Blizzard, or that I want EVE to be anything like any Blizzard product. I love this game, and like many aspects of it. So hopefully they go the Valve route as they get bigger and just continue to produce awesome stuff. The influx of awful ideas on these forums, especially lately, is far scarier than anything CCP has come up with/done.

Actually Blizzard had a formal licensing deal with Games Workshop at the time for those games, however GW pulled out fairly late in development leaving Blizzard to scramble and change things up a bit to prevent rather painful lawsuits when they did release the games. The end result is pretty obvious, and I suspect GW is still kicking themselves over all the potential money they lost on those 2 games alone.

Indeed, plus I can't really agree with any of his arguments. I also don't want this to turn in another Blizzard stole from GW -> GW stole from Tolkien discussion. The games were awesome for me and alot off other people. The story and music of warcraft 3 with those awesome cinematics were bloody brilliant. In my opinion Blizzard always had that brilliant blizzard touch in all off their games. Wether you agree or not, I don't care.
There were/are alot of other brilliant developers besides Blizzard. The Relic entertainment of the old 'Homeworld' days remains the king in my view. Altough I do love Company of Heroes alot.
Also I agree and disagree with the OP. But since there is nothing you can really do to stop such an evolution. It is pointless to discuss about it imo.

lol @ people bashing Blizzard, maybe they are not always original but they have the most solid IPs in PC gaming really.
of course i also do not understand why people bash WoW.
but then again i see the whole "The MMO i play is better" as no different at all than a bunch of rednecks arguing over Chevy vs Ford vs Dodge trucks or a bunch of preppy Yale students fighting over Mercedes vs BMW vs Audi for sports sedans
