Edited by: Justin Thyme on 01/07/2010 21:09:13 Has there been any progress in getting ccp to sell a random number generator security fob. The only reference to it i found in the forums was in features and ideas and that was closed with no answer.

Don't Warcraft already do this?
I would like to think your average EVE player is a bit more internetz savvy than some 12 year old ****** who wants to be a wizard.

Eve's forums are full of Natural Selection, worse than the WoW 12yr old's. Your post is a perfect example!

You obviously don't know why the 5 minute posting limit is on the forums do you?
Here's a hint: Massive keylogger spam that hijacked hundreds, if not thousands of accounts due to the "more internet savvy than a 12 year old ****** who wants to be a wizard" EVE player clicking on the obvious links to download it.

I'd like to think that too but then there wouldn't be as many hacked/stolen accounts and warnings about clicking on links in the forums.
With eve gate now up and running there is more potential then ever for folks logging in from places that are not as secure as their home. And even the savvy can get a key logger on there machine.
This isn't about Wow (and really that's taking the hatred of WOW very far) "That game that isn't eve has a secure login. We don't want that cause if we get that then the carebears win and we will be flying spaceships made to look like magical unicorns" really grow up.
It's about having a more secure login process. That benefits everyone.

People hate WoW because it is the in thing to hate in MMORPG land. if some other game becomes bigger that will be the game to hate. its exactly like how you have that clan of Linux users that just automatically hates windows users.

First things first, if you randomly click links then you deserved to get a keylogger, if you know anything about the internet you will have a latest anti-virus installed, a decent browser (Eg. ANYTHING but IE) and a decent firewall.
Now secondly, these secure fobs aren't 100% secure, you can quite easily still be hacked by them, what the hackers do is a "man in the middle attack" where they install a virus on your computer which intercepts your code when you send it, send the server a false one and then uses that code to access your account. Quite simple to do and extremely effective.

Considering 32% of the eve population lives in 4chan / something awful diagnosed with /a/dhd I think its safe to say 1/3rd of eve are 12, this isnt 2004 anymore where people 50+ play only :P --

FLASH... aaaaaagggghhhhhhh... killed everyone of us. *begin 80's pop* But seriously you can trow all of that at a system and it'll still get drive-by'd via Flash if you happen accross a compromised server or someones adnetwork gets scamed (again). Surveys indicate it's legit sites that are more likley to do this to you than a warezy one as well... ironic really.

There is also a very limited window of opportunity when using the keyfob's. If I were to steal your password, or more likley just brute force my way in on your username/password then that combination is good until you either notice something is amiss, don't subscribe any more or change one bit of the combination. That is a large window.
The keyfobs reduce the window to around 2min max. In that time I've got to get the username/fobcode (delivered via my infestation of your machine say), login as you... which may or may not boot you off and assuming it does quickly whip all of your assets and ISK away in the time it takes you to attempt logging in again. If it doesn't boot you off in favour of me then I'm scuppered eitherway as by the time you've finished your session my code will be invalid.
Keyfobs aren't perfect but they can greatly increase security.

Thank you. This is what I'm talking about. And CCP doesn't have to snail mail one to everyone in game. Just those that want to pay for one. There are also apps that can do it for the BB and Iphone. Me I'm willing to pay for an added layer of security. And will stay subbed longer with it.

The tokens in question are called RSA tokens. The 6 digit code it generates when you press the button has a life duration of approx 20 seconds. The way they work is pretty simple. Each token has a unique serial number, that serial number is in a master database of whomever issued it(in this case it would be CCP maintaining the db) When you initialize the token, you enter your serial number, the initial code, and then if I remember correctly the next code(ie wait 20 seconds press button again) to sync it with their servers.(It's based on a fairly complex algorithm). After that, when ever you enter your ID/PWD you will be prompted to then enter your RSA token generated code or depending on how it's implimented, it will require you to enter the code at the same time as your ID/PWD.
Is it 100% secure? Nope. Does it go a long way to prevent script kiddies and subpar hacks from gaining access to your account? Typically yes, although nothing in life is guaranteed except death.

I hate wow because it has all that effeminate orks and dorks ****. I am not a part of "mmorpg land" EVE is the only "MMORPG" I would ever play. I only respect games that are about killing, because that is the point of gaming. Gay magic, furries and such is not. Also I have seen wow ruin many lives. Seen people lose their jobs or drop out of school for wow. Saw a mother abandon a small child so that she could keep playing wow. Therefore, wow is un-hetero.

More active as in more forum posts? Or something else.
But being summertime means less work at work and thus I can spend more time whoring the forums and in-game as for the time when I'm not at work - I have no life

I think this topic came up a few months ago. I seem to remember someone talking about the hefty fixed costs of setting up an authenticator system, and that Eve's subscriber base probably wouldn't make it cost effective to do.
